The world's primates(灵长目动物)are being threatened by one of their own—us. In a bleak new study published this week in the journal Science Advances,31top primatologists warn that the planet could see a mass extinction of nonhuman primates as a consequence of human activities.Some60percent of species are in danger of becoming extinct, the researchers write, and a full75percent are in decline. If the effects of habitat loss, hunting and man-made climate change aren't mitigated, they say,our closest animal cousins will start to vanish in the next25to50 years.

“This truly is the11th hour for many of these creatures,”University of Illinois anthropology professor Paul Garber, who co-led the study, said in a statement.

The study is one of the most comprehensive surveys of the world's504nonhuman primate species. It's a big group, ranging from tiny, nocturnal lorises to the gargantuan great apes and spanning most of the planet's tropical and subtropical regions.Researchers are still uncovering new species;just last week, scientists named a new type of gibbon that dwells in southwest China.

The outlook for most populations is grim.Only200of those newly named gibbons, Hoolock tianxing, are known to be living in the wild, according to the BBC.Other numbers are far smaller—as of2014,just50of Madagascar's Northern Sportive Lemurs were still around.

Garber and his colleagues catalogued the ongoing threat to primate populations, of which there are many:hunting for bushmeat and body parts to sell on the black market, the illegal trade of primates as pets, the increased instance of anthroponotic illnesses(diseases transferred from humans to animals)and the wide-ranging effects of climate change.

58.What does the11th hour mean in the third paragraph?

A.The additional time

B.The outline of extinctions

C.The last moment

D.The final decision

59.What can we learn about the primates from this text?

A.Human beings are not classified as primates.

B.Paul summarized danger factors independently.

C.Primates brought us some diseases.

D.Trade of gibbons is condemned.

60.Which opinion may Garber agree with?

A.Both human and animals should make use of forests.

B.We can relatively take steps to promote primate evolution.

C.Finding new species can help slow extinction speed.

D.Helping primates should merely rest on protection awareness.

Forecasting the tornado—the most destructive of all weather phenomena—has long been a baffling problem to meteorologists.Detailed observations of tornadoes in the formative stages have been lacking, and no satisfactory theory could explain the development of vortex(旋风).Recently however, considerable progress has been made, and research is currently proceeding along two quite different lines. One approach is that of systematically defining the particular combination of weather conditions that accompany or precede tornadoes. The other is aimed at discovering the dynamics of vortex itself, and thus establishing the atmosphere conditions favoring occurrence.

Earlier it had been noticed that tornadoes seemed to require the presence of a very moist layer of air in the lower atmosphere, capped by a much drier layer, and that they usually occured along“squall lines”—lines of thunderstorm activity ahead of an advancing cold https://www.wendangku.net/doc/767605580.html,ing these and similar observations as a starting point,E.J.Fawbush and https://www.wendangku.net/doc/767605580.html,ler,of the Air Weather Service at Tinker Air Force Base,Oklahoma, made detailed analyses of many situations involving tornadoes, and succeeded in isolating a number of factors that,in combination, frequently prescribed a region of tornado occurrence. These factors included the aforementioned moist and dry layers, the proximity of a front or squall line,a given temperature lapse rate with height,a tongue of moist air extending northward at the surface, and a existence of a narrow belt of strong winds over the area at upper levels. Thus an important step was made in establishing an empirical methodology for the forecasting of tornadoes.Further refinements including studies the relative importance of the various parameters, together with statistical evaluation of independent data, should lead to additional improvements in forecasting and should also furnish clues as to the mechanism involved in tornado development.

The second approach to tornado research has resulted from the hypothesis proposed by Morris Tepper,U.S.Weather Bureau, that the intersection(交叉)of two unequal“pressure jumps”created a vortex sheet(涡流面),thus affording an explanation for the development of the tornado vortex.Pressure jumps may be likened to hydraulic jumps or shock waves in supersonic flow. With the two-layer atmosphere already mentioned, gravity waves can move along the dividing surface at speed of around25-50mph.If,however,the air below is“pushed”by an advancing cold front fast than the wave speed, the air will tend to pile up,and a jump with form and move outward.Rather strong upward velocities(速度)would be expected at the edge of the jump and could serve to initiate and intensify convective activity such as thunderstorms.Tepper has consequently proposed that many if not all squall lines are the result of pressure jumps. When two unequal shock waves intersect,a trailing vortex sheet is formed along the line of intersection.Intersecting pressure jumps should behave similarly and thus account for the generation of tornado vortex, other condition being favorable.

61.What can we learn about vortex in the first paragraph?

A.The information about vortex is almost zero.

B.There are two methods to destroy vortex.

C.Studying on weather conditions gives the assistance.

D.Scientists prefer to use the second approach.

62.Which picture shows the true situation of a tornado?

A. B.

C. D.

63.Which description disobeys the third paragraph?

A.Pressure jumps are similar to hydraulic jumps.

B.Upward velocities may not lead to thunderstorms.

C.The speed of gravity waves is more than25mph.

D.Pressure jumps which behave similarly can explain vortex.

64.What may be the best title of this passage?

A.How to Forecast the Tornado?

B.An Introduction of Destructive Tornado.

C.How Meteorologists React to Tornado?

D.Squall Lines—the Core of the Research.

Jack London grew up in the slum area of Oakland,California,a place which he later called"the cellar of society."Born out of wedlock on January12,1876,he never knew his father,William Henry Chaney, who had left Jack's mother,Flora Wellman, before Jack's birth. On September7,1876,Flora Wellman married John London, from whom her son Jack took his name.

By the age of fifteen,London had turned delinquent.Barely seventeen,he signed aboard the schooner(帆船)Sophie Sutherland, bound for Japan and the Bering Sea. Returning from the voyage in1894,London began to be interested in the plight of the underprivileged and working classes,so he joined a group of militant workers

who were going to Washington to protest the wretched working conditions in the country, caused by the Depression of1894.He did not reach Washington, however; he deserted this"Industrial Army"in Hannibal,Missouri, and for a time he traveled around the country as a hobo.At Niagara Falls,he was arrested for vagrancy(流浪)and sentenced to the Erie County Penitentiary. He was released after thirty days, and he quickly caught the first train heading West, arriving eventually in Oakland.

It was probably soon after his release from the penitentiary that London became seriously interested in politics, and as a result,he joined an Oakland branch of the Socialist Labor Party in April1896.Then soon afterward,he enrolled as a student at the University of California at Berkeley, where he attempted to further his studies in the most influential scientific and philosophic theories of the late nineteenth century —Darwinism,Social Darwinism,Nietzscheism, and Marxism. He soon became restless, though, and he left the university during his second semester as a student. From California,he went North,to the Klondike to search for gold, and his adventures there became the basis of many stories. In fact, two of his most famous novels,The Call of the Wild and White Fang, are set in the North, and while these two novels are perhaps his most famous in the United States,London is equally well known in places outside of the United States as the author of a number of socialistic works:The Iron Heel(1908),The War of the Classes(1905),Revolution and Other Essays(1910),and The People of the Abyss(1903).London has said that The People of the Abyss was his favorite book;it is a sociological study about the worst areas of poverty in London,England's East End and is based on London's first-hand experiences while he lived there.

Early in1900,London married Bessie Maddern and began his career as a serious writer. He soon finished his first novel,A Daughter of the Snows, which was published in1902,and in the summer of1903,London met Charmian Kittredge, whom he promptly fell in love with and abruptly left his wife and two daughters for. In ill health most of his life,by1915,London was almost lame. His bowels gave him continual pain, and in order to reduce the pain,London began using opium and morphine, and it was not long before he became addicted to the drugs. As a consequence, his kidneys were also eventually wrecked by his misuse of all of the drugs, and London refused to even quit smoking, although he had cancer of the throat.By November21,1916,London was in such poor health that he spent the entire day in bed. Then shortly before dawn the next day,he injected himself with what would prove to be an overdose of drugs. That evening,he died;he was forty years old. There is,naturally, some question as to whether his death was an intentional suicide.

65.What can we learn about Jack London’s childhood?

A.His father died as soon as he was born.

B.He stole John’s name after his mother remarried.

C.He took a ship to Japan for livelihood.

D.He lived in poor areas in California.

66.Why did Jack London join the Socialist Labor Party?

A.Because he was into politics.

B.To further his studies in Marxism.

C.To prepare money for his gold trip.

D.Because he was a patriot.

67.Which book below shows the thought of socialism?

A.A Daughter of the Snows

B.White Fang

C.The People of the Abyss

D.East End

68.Why did Jack London leave his family?

A.To look for better writing conditions.

B.He was addicted to drugs.

C.Kittredge gave him inspirations.

D.He had an affair.

2017年江苏省英语高考阅读C

2017年江苏省英语高考阅读C A new commodity brings about a highly profitable,fast-growing industry, urging antitrust(反垄断)regulators to step in to check those who control its flow. A century ago,the resource in question was oil. Now similar concerns are being raised by the giants(巨头)that deal in data, the oil of the digital age. The most valuable firms are Google,Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft. All look unstoppable. Such situations have led to calls for the tech giants to be broken up. But size alone is not a crime. The giants' success has benefited consumers. Few want to live without search engines or a quick delivery. Far from charging consumers high prices, many of these services are free (users pay, in effect, by handing over yet more data). And the appearance of new-born giants suggests that newcomers can make waves, too. But there is cause for concern. The internet has made data abundant, all-present and far more valuable, changing the nature of data and competition. Google initially used the data collected from users to target advertising better. But recently it has discovered that data can be turned into new services: translation and visual recognition, to be sold to other companies. Internet companies’ control of data gives them enormous power. So they have a “God’s eye view” of activities in their own markets and beyond. This nature of data makes the antitrust measures of the past less useful. Breaking up firms like Google into five small ones would not stop remaking

2009年-2018年十年江苏高考英语真题 任务型阅读(含答案)

2009-2018年高考真题任务型阅读 2009年: Communication Principles How you see yourself can make a great difference in how you communicate.“Every individual exists in a continually changing world of experience of which he(or she)is the center”.Many communication scholars and social scientists believe that people are products of how others treat them and of the messages others send them. But every day we experience the centrality of our selves in communication.A student.for instance, may describe a conflict with a teacher as unfair treatment:“I know my teacher doesn?t like the fact that I don?t agree with his opinions.and that?s why he gave me such a poor grade in that class.”The teacher might say the opposite. Each person may believe that he is correct and that the ot her person?s view is wrong. The concept of serf originates in communication.Through verbal and nonverbal symbols, a child learns to accept roles in response to the expectations of others. You establish self-image。The sort of person you believe you are,by how others think of you.Positive, negative, and neutral messages that you receive from others all play a role in determining who you are.Communication itself is probably best understood as a dialogue process. Our understanding of communication comes from our interactions with other people. In a more obvious way.communication involves others in the sense that a competent communicator considers what the other person needs and expects when selecting messages to share. So,the communication begins with the self,as defined largely by others, and involves others,as defined largely by the self. Communication Occurs almost every minute of your life.If you are not communicating with yourself(thinking, planning, reacting to the world around you),you are observing others and drawing inferences from their behavior.Even if the other person did not intend a message for you.you gather observations and draw specific conclusions.A person yawns and you believe that person is bored with your message.A second person looks away from you and you conclude that person is not listening to you.A third person smiles(perhaps because of a memory of a joke he heard recently)and you believe that he is attracted to you.We are continually picking up
