1.What can you infer from the author’s words “as if we had never been Black

before”?

Discrimination against the blacks had been a long-established, deep-rooted and widespread practice in the country. Being black simply meant mistreatment.

Therefore, the unfair treatment they received at Breyer’s was not surprising at all;

as blacks they should have expected this and had no reason to feel shocked and indignant.

2.To what extent did the color white antagonize the author?

We can perceive the author’s antagonism from such descriptions as the white waitress, the white counter, the white ice cream, and the white pavement, the white stone monuments, and the white heat in Washington D.C., all of which made her sick to her stomach for the whole rest of that trip. In a word, it was the racial discrimination suggested by the dazzling color, white, that drove the author mad.

3.What kind of man was the principal in the author’s eyes?

He was a stern, repressed maniacal child killer, probably whipping kids with his twitching hands from time to time.

4.How does the author depict her grandmother in the story?

Her grandmother was a fragile woman in her seventies, though her voice could cover even the loudest of all the street vendors. She told jokes about sex, and spoke quick, loud, grinding Chinese unlike the quiet, lilting romance of French or the gentle refinement of the American South.

5.How was the manner of warders contrasted with that of the condemned

prisoner before the execution?

The warders appeared quite tense gripping him by arm and shoulder to make sure he was right there, whereas he stood quite unresisting with his arms limply in the ropes, and later walked quite steadily towards the gallows.

6.How did the atmosphere after the hanging differ from that before?

Everything seemed to have returned to normal. The warders unfixed their bayonets, and two of them got ready to ladle out rice, and the convicts were getting their breakfast in a homely, jolly atmosphere, in which singing, or sniggering, or chattering was waiting at any moment to start.

7.What can you infer about Marie Curie from the way she reacted to her

mother’s death when she was only ten?

Young as she was, Marie Curie did not appear to be affected by her mother’s death at all and carried on with her schoolwork as if nothing had happened. But when she was left alone, she cried her eyes out for months releasing her bitter grief.

8.Why does the author consider Marie Curie’s leaving for Paris a remarkable

act of courage?

First, she was then 22 years old, too young to confront the world all by herself.

Second, survival in a big city like Paris would be difficult for a poor, common, and inexperienced girl like her.

9.How does Henry assess their petitions, remonstrations and supplications?

He thinks that their petitions have been treated rudely, their remonstrations have brought about more violence and insult, and that their solicitations have been disregarded. After they have done all that can be done, there is no longer any possibility for hope of peace and reconciliation.

10.Why should Henry think that the war is inevitable?

They have done everything that could be done to prevent the coming war, but in vain. If they wish to be free, if they mean to preserve those inestimable rights of national independence and dignity, for which they have long been engaged in the noble struggle, they must fight.
