Part Reading Com Ⅱprehension (40 points)

Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or

incomplete statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You

should decide on the best choice, and write it in the brackets “【】”. Passage One

Sometimes teens need to have some time away from their families. They may want to move

out of the family for a while. Many parents will say no to this demand. But experts say it might be

a good idea to let your teens live with a friend or relative. “It was the break I needed at the time,”

said Richard Lerner. He is talking about the time he spent living with his grandmother when he

was 15. “It allowed me to be a different person than I was with my parents.” Lerner said. He now

heads the Institute for Children, Youth and Families at Michigan State University. Experts say teens living away from their families can test new ways of thinking and getting

along with people. They may see new solutions to problems. This is different from running away,

the experts stress. Runaways are often fleeing serious problems. Some teens who want some time

away from family attend a structured summer program. Others live for a while with a relative or

with the family of a friend.

If there is conflict at home, having a teen live elsewhere can benefit other family members. It

gives everyone space to develop better relationships. Joseph Kett teaches history at the University

of Virginia in Charlottesville. He says living at home until the late teen years has become the norm

only in recent times. “In the 17th century, children were often sent to live in other people’s homes

when they were about 10 or 11.” he said.

Peter Sheras teaches education at the University of Virginia. He said parents should listen

when a child wants to move out. They should try to find out why the child wants some time away.

Often, parents can help the child find a safe place to stay during that time. In other cases, they can

meet the child’s needs at home.

41. According to this passage, many parents think it________ for their children to live away from

them.

A. right

and his food did not agree with him. This situation lasted for some time. Finally,

after several

sleepless nights, he decided to consult his doctor. The doctor advised a change of surroundings.

“Go abroad”, he said. “But I’m not good at foreign language,” said Mr. Smith. “It doesn’t matter,”

said the doctor. “It won’t hurt you to talk a little less. Go on a voyage. Take plenty of exercise. Try

to reduce your weight. Avoid rich food.”

Mr. Smith went to Switzerland. He did not know French or German, and had to communicate

through gestures. He attended a physical training course. The instructor made him bend his knees

swing his arms, stretch his neck and shake his head rapidly. He had to lie on the ground and raise

his right and left legs alternately. After a time his muscles grew hard and firm. He forgot the

financial crisis and the importance of raising the level of production. He even began to notice

Passage Three

It is difficult for doctors to help a person with a hurt brain. Without enough blood, the brain

lives only three to five minutes. Sometimes the hurt brain gets better by itself. More often the

doctors can’t fix the hurt brain. Sometimes they are afraid to try something to

help. It is dangerous

to work on the brain. The doctor might make the person worse if he works on the brain. Dr. Robert White, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks

doctors should try to make the brain become very cold. If it is very cold, the brain can live without

blood for 30 minutes. This gives the doctors a longer time to do something for the brain.

Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys. First he taught them to do different jobs. Then he

operated on them. He made the monkeys’ blood go through a machine. The machine cooled the

blood. Then the machine sent the blood back to the monkeys’ brain. When the brain temperature

was 10℃, Dr. White stopped the blood to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back on.

He warmed the blood again. After their operations, the monkeys were as they were before. They

were healthy and busy. Each one could still do the jobs the doctor had taught them. Dr. White’s idea works well on monkeys. Are there other problems with human beings?Dr.

White thinks doctors will use his idea on human beings. He thinks it will help people who have to

die when their heart stops? doctors can start it again. The problem comes when the brain is without

blood for three to five minutes? the person has a living body, but a dead brain. Maybe in the future,

doctors will try Dr. White’s idea. When the person’s heart stops, the doctors will quickly try to

cool the brain. They will have 30 minutes to start the heart again. Maybe there will be no problem

with the brain.

51. Which of the following expresses the main idea of the first paragraph?

D. Supplying enough blood for the brain.

53. When a person’s heart stops beating,________.

A. it doesn’t necessarily mean that he cannot come to life again

B. it definitely means that he can never come back to life again

C. it undoubtedly means that his brain has died at the same time

D. it undoubtedly means that his body has died at the same time

D. A New Machine to Help the Brain. Passage Four

I hear many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so.

At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on

your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all

taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out

boldly on their own, most of them are clutching at one another’s hands for courage. They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off

in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up just by listening to the same record.

Their reason for thinking or acting in this way is that the crowd is doing it. It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to

go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager

can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s

parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a

greater barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.

But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to

classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when every one else is

collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your

classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come with the people who

respect you for whom you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.

56. The main purpose of this passage is to tell ________ .

A. readers how to be popular with people around

B. teenagers how to learn to decide things for themselves

C. parents how to control and guide their children

D. people how to understand and respect each other

57. According to the author, many teenagers think they are brave enough to be themselves, but, in

fact, most of them ________ .

A. have much difficulty understanding each other

B. lack confidence

C. dare not cope with problems singlehanded

D. are very much afraid of getting lost

58. According to the passage, which of the following is not true?

A. There is no popularity that really counts.

B. What many parents are doing is in fact hindering their children from finding their own paths.

C. It is not necessarily bad for a teenager to disagree with his or her classmates.

D. Most teenagers ate not actually rebelling.

59. The author thinks of advertisements as ________.

A. original

B. influential

C. detrimental

D. authoritative

60. During the teenager years, one should learn to ________.

A. differ from others in as many ways as possible

C. find one’s real self

D. rebel against parents and the popularity wave

part Ⅵ Writing (20 points)

No Peace, No Development

In the modern world, peace and development have become two major themes. But some areas in the world are still involved in wars. Take the ongoing Iraqi war for example. The war is

hurting people’s welfare. So people all over the world pay a lot of attention to these issues.

People usually compare wars to disasters. They are right because wars often bring about not

only great harm to people but also a lot of waste of wealth. During wartime, people’s lives become

so miserable that they don’t have enough food to eat and no shelter to live in. And in destroyed

cities, the residents find themselves homeless all of a sudden. In addition, if a country wants to

win a war, it has to spend a lot of money on both arms and armed forces. Then there is very little

money left to develop its economy. Even if the country wins the war, it is still difficult for it to

recover from the damage of the war.

In a word, whether the world can develop steadily depends on whether the world is at peace.

So peace and development are still hot topics in the world. I am sure that the majority of people

who love peace will appeal for a world without war.
