heart

Abstract:

The Tell-Tale Heart is one of the horror stories of Edgar Allan Poe’s, who was a master of the horror tale in American. The hero in this story is always afraid of the eyes of an old man. He is extreme anxiety under the eyes, for avoiding this anxiety, he kills the old man. This paper is to analyze the hero’s abnormal psychology.

1. The intention of murdering the old man

At the beginning of this story, the hero speaks with a unique voice: “TRUE! —nervous—very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad?” Next, he continue speaking something to prove that he is not mad, but in fact, all he said further prove that he is mad. What is more, he speaks again, with his own words; tell the reader the process of his crime and his psychology. Then the reason he kills the old man hears so incredible: “I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” The hero kills the old man just for getting rid of the fear the old man’s eye causes. The incredible reason is an obvious performance of abnormal psychology and distortion personality.

The personality psychology believed that a person's personality is composed of three levels: This I, self, and superego. The lowest level is this I, which represents a person's all unconsciousness, instinct and impulsion begin with one’s birth, like appetite, sexual desire and so on. The middle level is self, which is something belongs to consciousness. It is between this Land the external environment, plays a role to adjust and adapt, and restricts the activity of this I to a certain extent. The highest level is superego, which represents the society's ethics morality request. When this I, self and superego are balanced, the person’s inner world can be at normally, harmonious condition. If they are unbalanced, it definitely will create the abnormal psychology and the personality distortion. Anxiety is one of the external manifestations. In The Tell-Tale Heart,

the reason the hero murder the old man seems to be simple: “Object there was none. Passion there was none. I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this! He had the eye of a bird—pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so very gradually, I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” When we read it carefully, we will find that the eye of the old man is a metaphor expression in fact. In English language, the “I” and the “eye” have the same pronunciation. So, we can regard the “eye”as “I”. Thus, the hero murder the old man not for his eye, but for “I”, the hero himself. On the one hand, the self is impulsed by this I, and want to kill the old man; on the other hand, the self is restrained by the social moralities and laws because killing the old man is not morality. At the contradiction of the desire release and the morality restraining, the hero begin to speak to himself.

2 The death of the old man

According to Freud, everyone has two instincts, one is about being, and the other is about death (not being). Life stems from the inanimate object by an inconceivable way, at the same time, with the being; there is an instinct to destroy the life, to make it return to the inorganic condition. Depending on what has been discussed above, the destruction and the mistreatment have become two ways to divulge the death instinct. To the self, the impulsion of destruction displays as the suicide and oppressive; while, once the individual find a drain port to divulge the impulsion of destruction, it will be displayed as suffering other people on the flare. From the fist paragraph of the story, through the hero’s muttering, it is evident to the reader that the anxiety and the self ambush in the hero’s main consciousness all the time. What is more, human being is only an energy machine which urged by the unconscious desire and the instinct. The hero is under the pressure from the old man’s eye. He wants to destroy the fear by killing the old man, but he can not do that, because he is constrained by the super go which represents the morality. To do or not to do? Between the contradictions, under the unceasing impact, this I of the hero finally break through the fetter from the super go. “He shrieked once---once only. In an instant I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him.” The instinct of death, either destroys him self, or destroy the others. For releasing himself, the hero has to destroy the eye of the old man. “Yes, he was stone, stone dead, I placed my hand upon the heart and hail it there many minutes. There was

no beating, he was stone dead. His eye would trouble me no more.” Then the hero kills the old man cruelly and hides his corpse under the floor. The instinct of destruction ends with the death, so, the character’s inevitable result is the end of life and mind.

3. The truth of confess

As a matter of fact, the author tells readers that the hero is a person suffering from specific phobia at the beginning. Thus, his horror and the murder he did seem to be reasonable.

In other’s eyes, “I” am crazy in this story. As a matter of fact, “I” only feel that “I” am more sensitive than others and that my cognition is different from others’to great extent. Thus, the difference between us makes “me” lonely, at least in my mind and soul. “I” Can’t throw myself into the crowd, community and even the society. Moreover, “I” am so frightened to make friends and communicate with others. “I” also fear to be seen through by others, especially the old man’s eye, which seems to be able to penetrate me. All these make “me” feel fear and live a worried life. As a result, “I” become a person who has heavy phobias. Fear makes me lose my calm so that I murder the old man. But, why “I” confess that I murder the old man through the policemen can not find any clues.

At the end, there was such description: “It grew louder- loud-er-louder! And still the man chatted pleasantly, and smiled. Was it possible they heard not? Almighty God! -no, no! They heard! –they were making fun of my horror! –this I thought, and this I think. But anything was better than this suffering! Anything was more tolerable than this mockery! I could bear those smiles no longer! I felt that I must scream or die! and now –again ! –listen! Louder! Louder! Louder! Louder!”

Here, we could see that “I” come to illusion again from this description above. “I” seem to be able to hear the voice which can’t be heard by others. These strange voices not come from the reality, but from the bottom of “my” heart. “I” can hear them because “I” am feeling sacred now. “I” can’t control “myself” any more. The fear is so difficult to”me” to get rid of that “I” tell the truth at last. “I” tell the policemen that “I” murder the old man and the place “I” hide the corpse.

Except the analysis we have mentioned above, we also can get clues from personality psychology. Back to the three levels of personality, for releasing this I, “I” break all fetters and murder the old man, but, the self and the super go still existent in my mind, in my consciousness,

especially the super go. It is morality, ethics and conscience. After killing the old man, I live a life under the constraining and pressure from super go, from morality, ethics and conscience. The Super go monitors me and threatens me. Now, the super go takes an important role to stipulate the regular behavior style. Once the individual behaviors not according to the regular style, the super go will appear to punish and blame the this I severely. The rule of the super go stipulates that the human cannot massacre mutually. So, I can hear the hear beating, because the heart beating is from the signal of the super go, from the terror hides in the depth of one’s spirit. It urges me to behavior regularly, behavior in the scope of morality. Therefore, I have to confess my murder. Also, it is a recovery symbol of conscience, a symbol of being far away from the human evil. 4. Conclusion

In The Tell-Tale heart, Poe dose not attach his importance to talk about morality, ethic and conscience, but to personality, and the dark side of mind. So there are still many people who think that Poe’s work lacks the depth of both morality and philosophy in his works. However, the others think Poe’s work is meaningful. That he put the mental patient as the hero in his work is not blind and without goal. It is also not for entertainment the popular. Whatever the age is, the ideal work is inevitably the miniature of real life.

As a result, everyone, more or less has illness in spirit. In Poe’s works, he shows the same theme: the illusion of the fine; the loss of human heart, fear and loneliness. He uses his own and special way to give caution to the readers. One wants to grow up healthy, the request is higher to his psychological operation mechanism and coordinated ability. He should coordinates the relationship among the this I, the self and the super go; he should make his decision and judgment according to the outside reality, his decision and judgment should be uniform with the principle and common sense. So, one can be healthy and will not be confused with himself. Bibliography

教育资料 《短歌行》 《短歌行》赏析(林庚) 曹操这一首《短歌行》是建安时代杰出的名作,它代表着人生的两面,一方面是人生的忧患,一方面是人生的欢乐。而所谓两面也就是人生的全面。整个的人生中自然含有一个生活的态度,这就具体地表现在成为《楚辞》与《诗经》传统的产儿。它一方面不失为《楚辞》中永恒的追求,一方面不失为一个平实的生活表现,因而也就为建安诗坛铺平了道路。 这首诗从“对酒当歌,人生几何”到“但为君故,沉吟至今”,充分表现着《楚辞》里的哀怨。一方面是人生的无常,一方面是永恒的渴望。而“呦呦鹿鸣”以下四句却是尽情的欢乐。你不晓得何以由哀怨这一端忽然会走到欢乐那一端去,转折得天衣无缝,仿佛本来就该是这么一回事似的。这才是真正的人生的感受。这一段如是,下一段也如是。“明明如月,何时可掇?忧从中来,不可断绝。越陌度阡,枉用相存。契阔谈宴,心念旧恩。月明星稀,乌鹊南飞。绕树三匝,何枝可依。”缠绵的情调,把你又带回更深的哀怨中去。但“山不厌高,海不厌深”,终于走入“周公吐哺,天下归心”的结论。上下两段是一个章法,但是你并不觉得重复,你只觉得卷在悲哀与欢乐的旋涡中,不知道什么时候悲哀没有了,变成欢乐,也不知道什么时候欢乐没有了,又变成悲哀,这岂不是一个整个的人生吗?把整个的人生表现在一个刹那的感觉上,又都归于一个最实在的生活上。“我有嘉宾,鼓瑟吹笙”,不正是当时的情景吗?“周公吐哺,天下归心”,不正是当时的信心吗? “青青子衿”到“鼓瑟吹笙”两段连贯之妙,古今无二。《诗经》中现成的句法一变而有了《楚辞》的精神,全在“沉吟至今”的点窜,那是“青青子衿”的更深的解释,《诗经》与《楚辞》因此才有了更深的默契,从《楚辞》又回到《诗经》,这样与《鹿鸣》之诗乃打成一片,这是一个完满的行程,也便是人生旅程的意义。“月明星稀”何以会变成“山不厌高,海不厌深”?几乎更不可解。莫非由于“明月出天山”,“海上生明月”吗?古辞说:“枯桑知天风,海水知天寒”,枯桑何以知天风,因为它高;海水何以知天寒,因为它深。唐人诗“一叶落知天下秋”,我们对于宇宙万有正应该有一个“知”字。然则既然是山,岂可不高?既然是海,岂可不深呢?“并刀如水,吴盐胜雪”,既是刀,就应该雪亮;既是盐,就应该雪白,那么就不必问山与海了。 山海之情,成为漫漫旅程的归宿,这不但是乌鹊南飞,且成为人生的思慕。山既尽其高,海既尽其深。人在其中乃有一颗赤子的心。孟子主尽性,因此养成他浩然之气。天下所以归心,我们乃不觉得是一个夸张。 .
