When Sarah Hansen first came to Bonnie Schlachte’s ballet studio, she jokingly called herself a “weeble-wobble,” telling her ballet teacher that when she tried to walk, she would fall. “She couldn’t walk across the room without holding on to something,” recalls Schlachte. “She would immediately fall.”

Hansen was only in middle-school, but a progressive neurological disease was hindering her ability to walk, let alone do ballet. But Hansen had a tenacious spirit and desperately wanted to learn ballet. Hansen joined in weekly group classes at Schlachte’s ballet studio called Ballet for all Kids, a studio that teaches children with disabilities. Soon after she began classes and private lessons, her family saw a vast improvement in her ability to move.

She worked tirelessly in the studio, focusing on what her instructor wanted from her. “At the time, her foot wouldn’t fully rest on the floor,” explains Schlachte. “That’s why she couldn’t stand on her own, there was no support.” Schlachte pushed her student, explaining to Hansen that her brain has neuroplasticity(可塑性) so eventually it will receive the message.

As a mom, a classically trained ballerina, and holding a degree in psychology, Bonnie Schlachte was the perfect person to push Hansen to do her best. Schlachte put herself through college with dance and theater scholarships. After graduation, she came across an opportunity with children with developmental disabilities. She fell in love and chose to focus on jobs in that field.

Years later, Schlachte found herself watching and celebrating Hansen, who at one point could barely walk, was now moving across the floor on her own two feet. “One day, her ankle dropped, and she put her whole foot on the ground,” says Schlachte. “I was crying, her mom was crying, it was a great moment.”

26. What did Schlachte do to help Hansen walk?

B. She pushed Hansen in a wheelchair.

C. She asked Hansen to control her brain.

D. She paid the fee for her.

27. What made Schlachte and Hansen’s mother cry?

A. Hansen’s degree in psychology.

B. Hansen’s dance and theater scholarships.

C. Hansen’s opportunity with children.

D. Hansen’s improvement in walking.

Some pigs tend to be optimistic while others are more pessimistic, according to a new research that is meaningful to animal welfare. The study, published in the journal Biology Letters, is the first to show that mood and personality interact in an animal, influencing judgment.

Asher, a researcher at the University of Newcastl e’s Institute of Neuroscience, and her team housed groups of pigs in two types of environment. One reflected standard commercial conditions and the other was cushier with more space and plenty of soft, deep straw. After the pigs got accustomed to these new homes over a few weeks, the researchers picked 18 pigs from each type to train and test their judgment.

“To do this, we trained each pig that in one corner of a training room there would be a bowl with chocolate sweets —pigs love them — and at the opposite side of the room there would be a bowl containing coffee beans, which pigs find bitter-tasting,” a researcher said.

Over a number of training trials, pigs learned to go to the bowl reliably when it was in the corner where they had figured out to expect chocolate sweets. On the contrary, they quickly learned to avoid the bowl when it was in the corner where they would expect to find the coffee beans.

The researchers next placed an unfamiliar bowl in different locations, to see how the pigs would react. Some gaily dashed to the bowl no matter what, showing optimism that it would contain their favorite sweets. Others, however, behaved as though they expected it to contain coffee beans, displaying pessimism.

The findings suggest that a one-size-fits-all answer to animal welfare issues does not exist. Even if pigs are just equal to bacon or other meat for some people, there is still cause for concern. Studies have suggested that how an animal is treated during its lifetime can directly affect meat quality and taste.

28. What was the study trying to figure out?

A. How to make pigs happier. .

B. The similarities between humans and pigs.

C. How living environment affected pigs’ mood.

D. How pigs’ mood and personality affected their judgment.

29. What does the unde rlined word “cushier” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Simple.

B. More comfortable.

C. Unpractical.

D. Less free.

30. Which bowl can test whether a pig is optimistic or pessimistic?

A. The bowl with chocolate sweets.

B. The bowl containing coffee beans.

C. The bowl full of both sweets and beans.

D. The bowl unfamiliar to two types of pigs.

31. What do the findings of the new research imply?

A. People should treat pigs equally.

B. People’s health relies on meat quality.

C. People should meet pigs’ var ious needs.

D. People’s attitude toward pigs is totally wrong.

Elizabeth Freeman was born at about 1742 to African American parents who were slaves. At the age of six months she was acquired, along with her sister, by John Ashley, a wealthy

Massachusetts slaveholders. She became known as “Mumbet”or “Mum Bett”.

For nearly 30 years Mumbet served the Ashley family. One day, Ashley’s wife tried to strike Mumbet’s sister with a s pade. Mumbet protected her sister and took the blow instead. Furious, she left the house and refused to come back. When the Ashleys tried to make her return, Mumbet consulted a lawyer, Theodore Sedgewick. With his help, Mumbet sued for her freedom.

While serving theAshleys, Mumbet had listened to many discussions of the new Massachusetts constitution. If the constitution said that all people were free and equal, then she thought it should apply to her. Strangely enough, after the trial, the Ashleys asked Mumbet to come back and work for them as a paid employee. She declined and instead went to work for Segdewick. Mumbet died in 1829, but her legacy lived on in her many descendants. One of her great-grandchildren was W.E.B. Du Bois, one of the founders of the NAACP, and an important writer and spokesperson for African American civil rights.

Mumbet’s tom bstone still stands in the Massachusetts cemetery where she was buried. It reads, in part: “She was born a slave and remained a slave and remained a slave for nearly thirty years. She could neither read nor write, yet in her own area she had no superior or equal.”

Ways To Manage Stress Creatively

Stress is a huge problem for us all. Here’s what I’ve learned and applied to manage stress using my creativity.

1._36

Putting my creativity and my work first, I often neglected to eat, exercise, even stand up from my desk. I now realize that how I feel physically (and mentally) is more important than the work I

create. Taking care of myself includes all natural remedies(疗法). I’m learning how to say no to social pressures, in favor of my own well being.

2. Don’t worry about what other people think of you.

This is easier said than done, but I promise it does come with age. 37 A lot of people do offer unsolicited(自发的) advice. It is human nature to want to help other people. But if that advice is coming from a place of control or judgment, RUN in the opposite direction.

3. Don’t compare.

38 Most people are not as happy as they describe themselves to be. The best advice

I ever heard was this:Don’t compare your inside to other people’s outside. Be open to new experiences, be kind to yourself and accepting of the journey which is life. Being present means not thinking into the future, or harping(唠叨) on the past. The coolest thing about being present is that CREATIVITY LIVES IN THE MOMENT. 39

4. Your intentions matter.

40____ What was your intention? I remind myself to enjoy the process of my creative fun stuff, it’s for me. If others like it, great, but it’s the enjoyment of my creative intentio n, in the moment, that I treasure.

A. Stop judging.

B. Each moment is UNIQUE.

C. We have to work in order to live.

D. Take care of yourself — Mind AND Body.

E. Stress is often caused by comparison to others.

F. It’s important to remember why you started do ing something.

G. No one cares about what you’re doing unless what you’re doing affects them.
