Love, success, happiness, family and freedom----how important are these values to you? Here is one interview which explores the fundamental questions in life.

Question: Could you introduce yourself first?

Answer: My name is Misbah, 27 years old. I was born in a war-torn area. Right now I‘m a web designer.

Q: What are your great memories?

A: My parents used to take us to hunt birds, climb trees, and play in the fields. For me it was like a holiday because we were going to have fun all day long. Those are my great memories.

Q: Does your childhood mean a lot to you?

A: Yes. As life was very hard, I used to work to help bring money in for the family. I spent my childhood working, with responsibilities beyond my age. However, it taught me to deal with problems all alone. I learnt to be independent.

Q: What changes would you like to make in your life?

A: If I could change something in my life, I‘d change it so that my childhood could have taken place in another area. I would have loved to live with my family in freedom. Who cares whether we have much money, or whether we have a beautiful house? It doesn‘t matter as long as I can live with my family and we are safe.

Q: How do your get along with your parents?

A: My parents supported me until I came of age. I want to give back what I‘ve got. That‘s our way. But I am working in another city. It is hardly surprising that clothing manufacturers (生产商)follow certain uniform standards for various features(特征)of clothes. What seems strange , however, is that the standard adopted for women is the opposite of the one for men. Take a look at the way your clothes button. Men‘s clothes tend to button from the right, and women‘s form the left. Considering most of the word‘s population-men and women-are right-handed, the men‘s standard would appear to make more sense for women. So why do women‘s clothes button from the left?

History really seems to matter here. Button first appeared only on the clothes of the rich in the 17th century, when rich women were dressed by servants. For the mostly right-handed servants, having women‘s shirts button from the left would be easier. On the other hang, having men‘s shirts button form the right made sense, too. Most men dressed themselves, and a sword drawn from the left with the right hang would be less likely to get caught in the shirt.

Today women are seldom dressed by servants, but buttoning form the left is still the standard for them. Is it interesting? Actually, a standard , once set, resists change. At a time when all women‘s shirts buttoned form the left, it would have been risky for any single manufacture to offer women‘s shirts that buttoned the right. After all, women had grown so used to shirts which buttoned from the left and would have to develop new habits and skills to switch. Besides from the right, since anyone who noticed that would believe they were wearing men‘s shirts.

64.What is surprising about the standard of the clothing industry?

D. It fails to consider right-handed people.

65. What do we know about the rich men in the 17th century?

A. They tended to wear clothes without buttons.

B. They were interested in the historical matters.

C. They were mostly dressed by servants.

D. They drew their swords from the left.

66. Women‘s clothes still button from the left today because .

A. adopting men‘s style is improper for women

B. manufacturers should follow standards

C. modern women dress themselves

D. customs are hard to change

67. The passage is mainly developed by .

A. analyzing cause

B. making comparisons

C. examining differences

D. following the time order

Humans are naturally drawn to other life forms and the worlds outside of our own。We take delight in the existence of creatures and even whole societies Beyond our everyday lives.

This sense of wonder is universal. Look at the efforts that scientists(幻想)literature or movies like the lord of the rings. This sense of wonder draws us to each other,to the world around us ,and to the world of make-believe.but have we gone so far in creating worlds of fantasy that we are missing the pleasure of other worlds that already exist all around us?

Human beings,as biologists have suggested, possess an inborn desire to connect with and understand other life forms,However, people, especially in big eities, often lead rather isolated lives,In a study of British schoolchildren,it was found that children by age eight were much more familiar with characters from television shows and video games than common wildlife.without modem technology,a small Pond could be an amazing world filled with strange and beautiful plants, insects, birds, and animals 。when we lack meaning(交互)with the world around us,and somethings even with our families and friends,we seek to understand and communicate with things that exist only in our imaginations or on a computer screen。

The world of make-believe is not necessarily bad,but when the world of fantasy becomes the only outlet(出路)for our sense of wonder, then we are really missing something,we are missing a connection with the living world. Other wonderful wonderful worlds exist all around us.but even more interesting is that if we look closely enough,we can see that these worlds,in a broad sense, are really part of our own.

B.be confused by the world of make-believe

C.miss the chance to recognize the fantasy world

D.be trapped by other worlds existing all around us

75.What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To show us the hidden beauty in our world.

B.to warn us not to get lost in the fantasy world.

C.To argue against the misuse of the sense of wonder.

My parents were in a huge argument, and I was really upset about it. I didn‘t know who I should talk with about how I was feeling. So I asked Mom to allow me to stay the night at my best friend‘s house. Though I knew I wouldn‘t tell her about my parents‘ situation, I was looking forward to getting out of the house. I was in the middle of packing up my things when suddenly the power went out in the neighborhood. Mom came to tell me that I should stay with my grandpa until the power came back on.

I was really disappointed because I felt that we did not have much to talk about. But I knew he would be frightened alone in the dark. I went to his room and told him that I‘d stay with him until the power was restored. He was quite happy and said, ―Great opportunity.‖―What is?‖ I asked.―To talk, you and I,‖ he said. ―To hold a private little meeting about what we‘re going to do with your mom and dad, and what we‘re going to do with ourselves now that we‘re in the situation we are in.‖

―But we can‘t do anything about it, Grandpa,‖ I said, surprised that her e was someone with whom I could share my feelings and someone who was in the same ―boat‖ as I was And that‘s how the most unbelievable friendship between my grandfather and me started. Sitting there in the dark, we talked about our feeling and fears of life---from how fast things change, to how they sometimes don‘t change fast enough. The days of elderly women doing nothing but cooking huge meals on holidays are gone. Enter the Red Hat Society -a group holding the belief that old ladies should have fun.

―My grandmothers didn‘t do any thing but keep house and serve everybody. They were programmed to do that,‖ said Emils Comette, head of a chapter of the 7-year-old Red Hat Society.

While men have long spent their time fishing and playing golf, women have sometimes seemed to become unnoticed as they age. But the generation now turning 50 is the baby boomers(生育高峰期出生的人), and the same people who refused their parents‘ way of being young are now trying a new way of growing old.

If you take into consideration feminism(女权主义), a bit of spare money, and better health for most elderly, the Red Hat Society looks almost inevitable(必然的). In this society, women over 50 wear red hats and purple(紫色的) clothes, while the women under 50 wear pink hats and light purple clothing.

―The organization took the idea from a poem by Jenny Joseph that begins: ―When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple. With a red hat which doesn‘t go,‖ said Ellen Cooper, who founded the Red Hat Society in 1998. When the ladies started to wear the red hats, they attracted lots of attention.

―The point of this is that we need a rest from always doing something for someone else,‖ Cooper said. ―Women feel so ashamed and sorry when they do something for themselves.‖ This is why chapters are discouraged from raising money or doing anything useful. ―We‘re a ladies‘ play group. It couldn‘t be more simple,‖ added Cooper‘s assistant Joe Heywood.

―My kids really understand solar and earth-heat energy,‖ says a second-grade teacher in Saugus, California. ―Some of them are building solar collectors for their energy course.‖ These young scientists are part of City Building Educational Program (CBEP), a particular program for kindergarten through twelfth grade that uses the stages of city planning to teach basic reading, writing and math skills, and more.

The children don‘t just plan any city. They map and analyze(分析)the housing, energy, and transportation requirements of their own district and foretell its needs in 100 years. With the aid of an architect(建筑师)who visits the classroom once a week, they invent new ways to meet these needs and build models of their creations. ―Designing building of th e future gives children a lot of freedom,‖ says the teacher who developed this program. ―They are able to use their own rich imagination and inventions without fear of blame, because there are no wrong answers in a future context. In fact, as the class enters the final model-building stage of the program, an elected ?official‘ and ?planning group‘ make all the design decisions for the model city, and the teacher steps back and becomes an adviser.‖

CBEP is a test of activities, games and imitations that teach the basic steps necessary for problem-solving: observing, analyzing, working out possible answers, and judging them based on the children‘s own standards.

63. The Program is designed ______________.

A. to direct kids to build solar collectors

Everyone should visit a lighthouse at least once.

The most important reasons for such a visit is to realize how our ancestors(祖先) battled nature with the basic tools they had. They had only basic ways of creating light, and yet they found a way of using this simple technology in isolated(孤零零的)places to save ships from hitting rocks.

Secondly, visiting lighthouses will help us to understand the lives of lighthouse keepers. By their very nature, lighthouses were built on some rocks of cliffs. Thus, the lighthouse keepers often lived lonely lives. To walk around their small home, and imagine the angry storm outside beating against the walls, is to take a step towards understanding the lives they had.

The reasons for a visit to a lighthouse are not all so backward-looking in time. It is true that lighthouses were built in out-of-the-way places. But on a pleasant sunny summer day, this very isolation has a natural beauty that many people will love to experience. Therefore, with the gentle waves touching all round the lighthouse, the visitor is likely to think it is a world preferable to the busy and noisy modern life.

Another reason for considering a visit is that the lighthouses themselves can be very attractive buildings. Mankind could often not be content just to put up a basic structure, but felt the need, even in such an isolated place, to build with an artistic touch. The result is a view for tired eyes to enjoy.

Finally, lighthouses have a romantic attraction, summed up by the image of the oil-skin coated keeper climbing his winding stairs to take care of the light to warn ships and save lives.

67. What is the reason to look back into the past of a lighthouse?

A. To escape from the busy and noisy city.

B. To look for the tools used by our ancestors.

C. To experience the natural beauty of a lighthouse.

D. To learn about the living condition of lighthouse keepers.

One of my wongerful memories is about a Christmas gift. Unlike other gifts,it came without wrap(包装)。

On September 11th,1958, Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying,‖I promised you a gift, and here it is .‖ What an honor! One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mun wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I head mum and Dad whispering such words as ―hopeless‖,―pitiful‖,and ―dying‖, which sounded ominous.

Christmas was coming, don‘t expect any presents this year ‖Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room.I‘d never seen him cry before.

―thank god!‖I heard Mum cry.

From the upstairs window. I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them so happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there flat. But I knew they was not empty: they were filled with love!

There is no better way to enjoy Scottish traditions than going fishing and tasting a

little bit of whisky(威士忌)at a quiet place like the Inverlochy Castle. When Queen

Victoria visited the castle in 1873 she wrote in her diary, ―I never saw a lovelier spot ,‖ And she didn‘t even go fishing.

Scotland is not easily defined. In certain moments, this quiet land of lakes and grasses and mountains changes before your very eyes. When evening gently sweeps the hillside into orange light ,the rivers, teeming with fish, can turn into streams of gold . As you settle down with just a fishing pole and a basket on the bank of River Orchy,

near the Inverlochy castle , any frustration(烦恼)will float away as gently as the

circling water. It‘s just you and purple , pink ,white flowers, seeking a perfect harmony . To take the apple as a forbidden fruit is the most unlikely strory the Christians (基督教徒)have ever cooked up. For them, the forbidden fruit from Eden is evil(邪恶的).So when Columbus brought the tomato back from South America, a land mistakenly considered to be Eden, everyone jumped to the obvious conclusion.Wrongly taken as the apple of Eden, the tomato was shut out of the door of Europeans.

What made it particularly terrifying was its similarity to the mandrake, a plant that was thought to have come from Hell (地狱).What earned the plant its awful reputation was its roots which looked like a dried-up human body occupied by evil spirits. Though the tomato and the mandrake were quite different except that both had bright red or yellow fruit, the general population considered them one and the same, too terrible to touch.

Cautious Europeans long ignored the tomato, and until the early 1700s most of the Western people continued to drag their feet. In the 1880s, the daughter of a well-known plant expert wrote that the most interesting part of an afternoon tea at her father‘s house had been the ―introduction this wonderful new fruit--or is it a vegetable?‖ As late as the twentieth century some writers still classed tomatoes with mandrakes as an ‖evil fruit‖.

But in the end tomatoes carried the day. The hero of the tomato was an American namd Robert Johnson, and when he was publicly going to eat the tomato in 1820,people journeyed for hundreds of miles to watch him drop dead.‖ What are you afraid of?‖ he shouted. ‖I‘ll show you fools these things are good to eat!‖ Then he bit into the tomato. Some people fainted. But he survived and, according to a local story, set up a tomato-canning factory.

68. The tomato was shut out of the door of early Europeans mainly because ______.

B it was the apple of Eden

C it came from a forbidden land

D it was religiously unacceptable

69. What can we infer the underlined part in Paragraph 3 ?

B There was little progress in the study of the tomato

C The tomato was still refused in most western countries

D Most western people continued to get rid of the tomato

70. What is the main reason for Robert Johnson to eat the tomato Publicly ?

A To make himself a hero

B To remove people‘s fear of the tomato

C To speed up the popularity of the tomato

D To persuade people to buy products from his factory

71. What is the main purpose of the passage ?

A To challenge people‘s fixed concepts of the tomato

B To give an explanation to people‘s dislike of the tomato

C To present the change of people‘s attitudes to the tomato

D To show the process of freeing the tomato from religious influence

In his 1930 essay ―Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren ―, John Keynes, a famous economist, wrote that human needs fall into two classes: absolute needs ,which are independent of what other have , and relative needs ,which make us feel superior to our fellows. He thought that although relative needs may indeed be insatiable (无

止境的) ,this is not true of absolute needs.

Keynes was surely correct that only a small part of total spending is decided by the desire for superiority .He was greatly mistaken ,however ,in seeing this desire as the only source of insatiable demands

Decisions to spend are also driven by ideas of quality which can influence the demand for almost all goods, including even basic goods like food. When a couple goes out for an anniversary dinner, for example ,the thought of feeling superior to others probably never comes to them. Their goal is to share a special meal that stands out from other meals.

There are no obvious limits to the escalation of demands for quality. For example ,Porsche,a famous car producer, has a model which was considered perhaps the best sport car on the market. Priced at over $120,000,it handles perfectly well and has great speed acceleration. But in 2004 the producer introduced some changes which made the model slightly better in handling and acceleration. People who really care about cars find these small improvements exciting. To get them, however, they must pay almost four times the price.

By placing the desire to be superior to other at the heart of his description of

最新2014年高考英语重庆卷阅读理解E篇原文

2014年高考英语重庆卷阅读理解E篇原文 1 2 E It's generally believed that people act the way they do because 3 of their personalities and attitudes. They recycle their garbage because 4 they care about the environment. They pay $5 for a caramel brulée latte 5 because they like expensive coffee drinks. 6 It's undeniable that behavior comes from our inner dispositions 7 (性情), but in many instances we also draw inferences about who we are, 8 as suggested by the social psychologist Daryl Bem, by observing our own 9 behavior. We can be strangers to ourselves. If we knew our own minds, why 10 would we need to guess what our preferences are from our behavior? If our 11 minds were an open book, we would know exactly how much we care about the 12 environment or like lattes. Actually, we often need to look to our behavior 13 to figure out who we are. 14 Moreover, we don't just use our behavior to learn about our 15 particular types of character—we infer characters that weren't there 16 before. Our behavior is often shaped by little pressures around us, which 17 we fail to recognize. Maybe we recycle because our wives and neighbors 18 would disapprove if we didn't. Maybe we buy lattes in order to impress 19 the people around us. We should not mistakenly believe that we always 20 behave as a result of some inner disposition. 21 Whatever pressures there can be or inferences one can make, people 22 become what they do, though it may not be in compliance (符合) with their 23 true desires. Therefore, we should all bear in mind Kurt Vonnegut's advice: 24 "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend 25 to be." 26 52. According to the passage, personalities and attitudes are 27 commonly believed to . 28 A. determine one's behavior 29
