Before discussing different kinds of emotions, let us briefly talk about how researchers 36 bodily processes, actions and behavior, and how this relates to what we do in our daily lives when we observe emotions in 37 .

Bodily processes can be directly measured by 38 of a polygraph. When a polygraph is skillfully used to 39 how we react bodily with what we are 40 , it is called a "lie detector". Bodily processes can also be measured 41 . This is what we do when we observe someone blushing (脸红). However, we are not always 42 of what bodily processes respond to.

Measuring action 43 behavior is the other way researchers assess the emotions. 44 , one measure of fear of snakes is how 45 a person will go to the snake. Another procedure is to have a person 46 how afraid he is, or how he feels, in this way, researchers have 47 the so-called "fear thermometer" to assess a person's fear. 48 our everyday living, we do very much the same thing. Only not too 49 . We react to what a person does, what he says, 50 he says it, and how he looks. Is he smiling? Is his voice trembling? We put all this 51 together to infer what a person is feeling.

52 , we do not always act as we feel. Sometimes we do things that we don't feel like doing. 53 we say we feel one way and then we act another. Actors, for example, successfully learn to "make believe" emotions, or learn to 54 them. Thus we 55 always tell what a person is feeling by what he says or by what he does.

Several years ago I was at a train station in Amsterdam waiting in line to buy a ticket. As I stood there I saw a young homeless man asking people for money so he could buy breakfast. It was early in the morning and most of the travelers simply ignored the young man or gave him a dirty look. There was one exception though——an older, well-dressed businessman who looked as though he was from the middle-east. When approached by the panhandler, the gentleman looked straight into his eyes and quietly asked, ―How much will you need?‖ I couldn’t hear what the young man said but watched as the older man pulled several bills from his wallet and calmly placed them in the young man’s hands.

What impressed me more than anything was that the older man did not look away when he was approached (like so many others did). The fact that he offered money wasn’t nearly as important as the way he looked into the other man’s eyes.

I d on’t know if the young man actually used this money for breakfast or for some other purpose. What I do know is that I witnessed two completely different reactions to the same situation. I saw people who were either afraid or annoyed or distrustful. And then I saw this man who was not afraid and treated the homeless man as though he were a brother. I decided then and there that , even though we have to be careful in this world, I would rather be like him.

56. What do you think the young man was? He was a man _______.

A. who had lost his wallet and was short of money to buy his breakfast

B. whose home was destroyed by some disasters

C. who pretended to be poor in order to get money from people

D. who earned his living by begging

57. How was the young man treated by the passers-by?

A. Though they were friendly, they didn’t give anything to him.

B. Most of them avoided him or looked at him coldly.

C. They treated him politely, even looking carefully into his eyes.

D. Most of them smiled at him and gave him a few coins.

58. What lesson does the writer learn form this incident?

A. Kindness is the choice he’s decided to make when dealing with others.

B. We should be careful with others and only help those we trust.

C. It is necessary to be respectful to those who help others.

D. In this world, we have to be careful so as to be against cheaters.

59. What sentence will the writer most probably write to end the passage?

A. In this world, so many people aren’t merciful.

B. Mercy should be given to children when they’re brought up.

C. May each day bring us many opportunities for kindness.

D. Helping others is necessary, but do keep an eye on cheaters.

V olunteer work plays an important role in America’s high school education. A certain number of volunteer hours are a must for high schoolers. Great numbers of high school students are engaged in volunteer work for the purpose of having a promising future.

V olunteer work is a critical part of college applications.

In America, the perfect score is not the only factor to be considered in college admission which becomes more and more competitive. High school students are finding that whether they have impressive volunteer experience or not tends to be a key factor. Princeton University once enrolled a girl who successfully sold a large quantity of girl scout cookies (女童子军饼干). Instead of selling cookies in front of supermarkets or from door by door, the girl walked into a big company and asked to see the CEO. Beginning from the good taste of her cookies, she explained how the money would be used to help poor children and how the company would benefit if he bought her cookies. At last, her courage and wisdom impressed both the CEO and Princeton University.

V olunteering is a great preparation for future careers

Rather than picking a volunteer job randomly (随意的), some high school students choose activities based on potential careers or majors. Kymberly Bays is a high school graduate. Five days after she had received her high school diploma (毕业证书), she embarked on a journey to Africa for six weeks to be a volunteer teacher at a poor school. She also raised $1,000 through a part-time job to buy textbooks for the school. Since Kymberly wants to be a foreign news correspondent, she said the trip to Africa would help her learn more about adapting to foreign places and see how others live.

One trip for their Jack Russell terrier in a plane's cargo hold was enough to convince Alysa Binder and Dan Wiesel that owners needed a better option to get their pets from one city to another.

On Tuesday, the first flight for the husband-and-wife team's Pet Airways, the first-ever all-pet airline, took off from Republic Airport in Farmingdale, NY.

All commercial airlines allow a limited number of small pets to fly in the cabin. Others must travel as checked bags or in the cargo hold — a dark and sometimes dangerous place where temperatures can vary wildly.

Binder and Wiesel used their consulting backgrounds and business savvy to start Pet Airways in 2005. The last four years have been spent designing their fleet of five planes according to new four-legged requirements, dealing with FAA regulations and setting up airport schedules.

The two say they're overwhelmed with the response. Flights on Pet Airways are already booked up for the next two months.

Pet Airways will fly a pet between five major cities — New York, Washington, Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles. The $250 one-way fare is comparable to pet fees at the largest US airlines.

For owners the big difference is service. Dogs and cats will fly in the main cabin of a Suburban Air Freight plane, retooled and lined with carriers in place of seats. Pets (about 50 on each flight) will be escorted to the plane by attendants that will check on the animals every 15 minutes during flight. The pets are also given pre-boarding walks and bathroom breaks. And at each of the five airports it serves, the company has created a "Pet Lounge" for future fliers to wait and sniff before flights.

A trip from New York to Los Angeles, for example, will take about 24 hours. On that route, pets will stop in Chicago, have a bathroom break, play time, dinner, and bunk for the night before finishing the trip the next day.

Amanda Hickey of Portland, Ore. is one of the new airline's first customers. Her seven-year-old terrier-pinscher mix Mardi and 2-year-old puggle Penny are taking their first flight soon.

Hickey said the service was a welcome alternative to flying her dogs in cargo when she transplants them from her soon-to-be Denver home to Chicago to stay while she and her fiance travel to Aruba to get married.

"For a little bit more money, I have peace of mind," she said.

Harry Houdini was one of the greatest American entertainers in the theater this century. He was a man famous for his escapes---- from prison cells, from wooden boxes floating in rivers, from locked tanks full of water. He appeared in theaters all over Europe and America. Crowds came to see the great Houdini and his ―magic tricks.‖

Of course, his secret was not magic or supernatural powers. It was simply strength. He had the ability to move his toes as well as he moved his fingers. He could move his body into almost any position he wanted.

Houdini started working in the entertainment world when he was 17, in 1891. He and his brother Theo performed card tricks in club in New York. They called themselves the Houdini Brothers. When Harry married in1894, he and his wife Bess worked together as magician and assistant. But for a long time they were not very successful. Then Harry performed his first prison escape, in Chicago in 1898. Harry persuaded a detective to let him try to escape from the prison, and he invited the local newspapermen to watch.

It was the publicity that came from this that started Harry Houdini’s success. Harry had fingers trained to escape from handcuffs and toes trained to escape ankle chins. But his biggest secret was how he unlocked the prison doors. Every time he went into the prison cell, Bess gave him a kiss for good luck---- and a small skeleton key, which is a key that fits many locks, passed quickly from her mouth to his.

Harry used these prison escapes to build his fame. He arranged to escape from the local prison of every town he visited. In the afternoon, the people of the town would read about it in their local newspapers, and in the evening every seat in the local theater would be full. What was the result? World-wild fame, and a name remembered today.

Sue Beesley spent 25 years working in the IT industry before leaving to become a gardener. ―I spent all my time desiring some green space, something green to look at,‖ she says. These days she designs gardens for offices, to provide spaces where workers can relax during their lunch-breaks. ―It’s a real sensory lift, a pick-me-up(提神饮料), having a garden to wander out into on a sunny day,‖ she says.

Gardens don’t fit easily into the world of work. Amid all the strip lighting, computers and concrete you can be lucky to find much more than a few woods planted between car parking spaces. At the design company Wolff Olins, workers often arrive at the office early, particularly in the summer, to work on the large vegetable garden on the roof. Wolff Olins’s building manager, Stuart Bobertson, says the garden makes being at work more enjoyable. Rather than just going from a house to an office, it gives you some interaction with nature during your day.

The garden is maintained on a day-to-day basis by a staff club, but everyone in the company is encouraged to join in when they can. As well as providing employees with an opportunity to get their hands dirty, get outside and mix with colleagues form other departments, the garden also provides plenty of fresh, organic produce for the staff restaurant. From a PR point of view, the garden is a visible symbol of the company’s commitment to both environmental issues and employee welfare.

For The Office Group in London, which rents out office space, having a garden has brought financial rewards. ―The roof garden definitely helps us rent the offices out,‖ says Charlie Green, co-owner of the company, ―People love it. They have meetings up there. It has Wi-Fi and they can help themselves to freshly grown vegetables. It’s one of the first things we show prospective(预期的) renters.‖―Being outdoors is good for your soul,‖ say s Beesley, a former BBC Gardener of the Year. ―You feel better and are more productive. It puts you in a better frame of mind and you work better.‖

72. What does the gardens for offices bring to the workers?

A. Fresh fruits after lunch.

B. Relaxation in noon break.

C. All the food they eat in the staff restaurant..

D. Fresh flowers on their desks.

73. Where does the garden of Wolff Olins lies?

A. In parking spaces.

B. Between computer desks.

C. On the top of its office building.

D. Around the company’s bui ldings.

74. It can be inferred the renters of the offices can______.

A. eat the favorite vegetables in the garden

B. pay for their rent by planting vegetables

C. have financial problems from the garden

D. never be attracted by the garden

75.What does Beesley think a lot of?

A. The produce of the garden.

B. The environmental effect of the garden.

C. The financial rewards of the garden.

D. The spirit effect of the garden.

A listener has written from China for advice about how to lose weight. Michael in Shanghai says he is 26 and has battled obesity for most of his life.

Obesity , a severe weight problem, is a complex condition. A doctor may advise taking medicine along with changing one’s behaviors. Experts say that the most successful weight—loss plans include a well-balanced diet and exercise.

People who want to avoid weight gain have to balance the number of calories they eat with the number of calories they use. To lose weight, you can reduce the number of calories you take in, increase the number you use, or both.

A recent study looked at four of the most popular dieting plans in the US. Researchers at Stanford University in California studied over 300 overweight women, mostly in their thirties and forties. Each woman went on one of the four plans: Atkins,

The Zone, Ornish or LEARN. The women attended diet classes and received written information about the food plans.

At the end of the year, the women on the Atkins diet had lost the most, more than four and one-half kilograms on average. They also did better on tests for cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

Christopher Gardner, who led the study, says the Atkins diet may be more successful because of its simple message to eat less sugar. He also says that the advice to increase protein in the diet leads to more satisfying meals. He says that there was not enough money to study men, but that men would probably have similar results.

Last week, another report based on thirty-one studies suggested that only a small minority of people have long-term success with dieting. Most dieters regained their lost weight within five years and often they become more overweight. But those who kept the weight off generally were the ones who exercised.

It’s good to have a discussion among us on the issue of middle school students’ on net, but I think the most important thing is that the society, whether schools, families or net pubs, should create a favorable network environment for us middle school students, which is a fundamental problem. Carl is studying food science at college and hopes to open up meat processing factory of his own one day. A. / ;a B. / ;the C. the ; a D. the ; the 本题考查冠词,science是不可数名词,用the表示特指是不可能的,后面的factory是一个可数名词,用a 表示泛指。 22.——May I help you? You seem to be having some problems. ——, thanks. I think I can manage. A. All right B. No problem C. It’all right D. There’s no way 很多学生会选择答案D ,我想这是有道理的。A. 23. Interest is as to learning as the ability to understand , even more so. A. vital B. available C. specific D. Similar Be vital to 表示:对.....极端重要;something be available to somebody表示:某人可以得到某物,列句:cooperative medical service is available to all the members of the the commune. C 答案specific 不能与to 搭配;D 答案similar to 表示:与.....相似。 本题可以把定于to understand 省掉,也可以把后面的even more so省掉或还原。 Interest is as to learning as the ability 这样可以确定B是错误的,D更是错误的。 Interest is even more than the ability to understand. 很佩服出卷人! 原句:Interest is vital to learning 互联网对于学习极端重要。 变化之一:Interest is as vital to learning as the ability to understand 互联网对于学习极端重要,就像理解能力对于学习极端重要一样,互联网甚至比理解能力更加重要。 24.
