Stop thinking that you are too old to learn how to play the piano! You are able to learn the piano or any other instrument at any age. As long as you want to learn the piano, you can. What is a wedding like in Hong Kong? After a couple meets and falls in love, the man usually asks the woman to marry him and they become engaged. Then they prepare for their marriage. They have a wedding party in a church, in a famous park, or at a marriage office. There is a best man who helps the groom and a matron of honor (always a married woman) who helps the bride. These are the most important people in the wedding party.

The wedding ceremony is in the morning. The bride wears a long, white wedding gown and a veil (面纱), and the groom should wear a tuxedo (晚礼服). They exchange vows and wedding rings.

At noon, the bride goes to the groom’s house to visit and serve their parents, elder sisters or brothers, and some other relatives. These people give a “red packet” to the bride and groom. Later they go to the bride’s house and do the same.

In the evening, they will have a dinner at a hotel. Guests include parents, relatives and some of their old classmates or teachers.

The bride needs to have at least 4 or 5 wedding dresses for different occasions (场合). They can be whatever color she wants, but she has to have one which is called “quai boi”. This kind of dress represents China, so it is very important to wear it.

A professional photographer takes photos of them with each of their families and friends. They play games with each other. After that, they have to walk around to ask the guests if the dinner was good or not. After the wedding, they usually plan to go on a honeymoon for a week to a month.

You may have read this headline in your local newspaper this week: “Dropout Rate Getting Worse.” The article noted that despite all the advancements made in our society, we still do not know how to ensure that we fully educate all of our young. New studies show that fewer than half of the 9th graders in many of the nation’s largest cities ever graduate. The studies clearly show that the dropout rate isn’t dropping. And, in particular, the dropout rate isn’t dropping for those whose families are poor.

Amazingly, though so many regret the rising dropout rate, our schools continue to lack formal plans — or any plans — to teach students the importance of schooling. Most schools have no definite plan to ensure that students understand that school is necessary to being successful in the new century. Schools expect youth and children to act as though school is important, but they never teach them to believe that.

Years ago, families ensured that the offspring recognized the value of school. But in many modern families, the children may fail to recognize the importance of school life just because these families may actually tell the children that school is not important. Since many families now are not motivating (激发) their children to be involved, interested students, youth professionals, teachers and advisors may need to provide this training. Otherwise, it is likely the dropout rate will only worsen. Here are some ways to persuade even the most uninterested student that he / she must stay in school.

Ask students which century they will be prepared for. In the 1900s, the most common jobs

were farm laborer and domestic servant, and that meant education was not that needed. Now the most common jobs are office and sales worker, so education and diploma (学位证书) are usually needed. An amazing 6 out of 10 people today work in a store or in an office.

...

Tone of voice is very important in human conversation. A person might use words that communicate one message and a tone that shows something very different. This possibility for confusion (疑惑) is one reason that businessmen encourage discussing things in person, rather than through email, as tone cannot be determined in the written form.

The same rule is true with children. Children as young as a few months respond to a change in voice. It has been recorded that babies prefer to hear a story read by their own mother rather than another woman whom they do not know.

Have you ever talked to someone who had little or no changes in their voice no matter what you were discussing? Think of the teacher or professor you had in the past that spoke in a monotone manner for the entire lecture. It is very boring and difficult to become interested in the topic.

Parents should make an active effort to communicate with your child. If your child figures out how to open a box he or she has been struggling with and says “YES!” with pride in his or her voice, your response should be happy an d excited (something encouraging, like “You did it!”). If you plainly said the same thing, you would not be matching the tone of your child.

This applies to feelings that the child may express in everyday situations as well. If a child argues with a friend, your response should not be said in a high voice or with a smile. Seriously and sincerely you should say “You look sad” or “That must have been hard for you”.

The tone of your voice expresses understanding, acknowledgement, connection and several other healthy things to your child. Although your words are very important, equally important is

the tone with which you speak those words.

73. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?

A. To tell us that our tone of voice is as important as the words we say.

B. To tell us that businessmen prefer to talk in person.

C. To lead to the topic of the passage.

D. To advise us to use different tones of voice correctly.

74. The underlined word “monotone” probably means a(n) _____ tone.

A. unchanging

B. cold

C. slow C. high

75. When communicating with their children, what are parents advised to do?

A. To use a tone of voice that can match their children’s feelings.

B. To hide their feelings with different tones of voice.

C. Not to speak to their children in a low voice.

D. To train their children to express their feelings by tone of voice.

书面表达(One possible version)

Many students have the habit of not having breakfast. In my opinion, skipping breakfast is something we really should not do. Here are some of my reasons:

As we know, we have four classes in the morning. We will be hungry and fail to focus on listening to the teachers if we don’t have breakfast. Thus, our studies will be greatly affected. Not having breakfast also has a bad effect on our physical development and could result in many health problems, especially stomach disease. We are to enter Grade Three after this summer holiday, so having breakfast is especially important for us. We must be full of energy every day to study well, and having breakfast can guarantee that we will have that energy.

His art and talent were recognized by almost no one. He suffered from a mental illness that led him to cut off part of his left ear in 1888 and to shoot himself two years later. But after his death, he achieved world fame. Today, Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh is recognized as one of the leading artists of all time. Now, 150 years after his birth on March 30, 1853, Zundert, the town of his birth, has made 2003 “The van Gogh Year” in his honor. Van Gogh sold only one painting during his short life. He relied heavily on the support from his brother, an art dealer who lived in Paris. But now his works are sold for millions of dollars. And it wasn't until I met a very bossy person that I understood how they felt! My school was holding a fundraiser (募捐活动) called the Spring Fling Fair, and everyone was going to help out. I was pretty excited about it. There were lots of committees to choose from, and I chose games and activities, which sounded like fun. But every time we got together, a guy named Peter did the same thing. He never seemed to realize that he was part of a team with three other people. At last, it was the day of the Spring Fling Fair, and we were all running around getting ready. “You need to make the horseshoes sign hang straighter,” Peter commanded. “Would you please do it yourself?”I said. “I'm kind of busy organizing the prizes.” “There are too many pink balloons on the wall,”Peter complained. “You should add more blue ones.” “Feel free to go ahead and add them,” Mike said. The best (or maybe the worst) example of Peter's bossiness happened when the Spring Fling Fair finally started. A cute little girl was fishing for a prize, and Peter grabbed (抢夺) the fishing pole right out of her hands! “You're holding it all wrong,” he told her. “Do it like this!” This little girl looked up at Peter, took a big breath, and said, “That may be the right way for you to do it, but it's not the right way for me.” And that was probably the best thing this little girl could have said. The good part of this experience is that it helped me understand how my brother and sister felt when I told them what to do and didn't stop to be polite or consider their feelings. Now I try to be more patient and less bossy, and we get along much better. 1.On the day of the Spring Fling Fair, Peter ________. A.had a great time B.kept giving orders C.was chosen as the leader D.was running around getting ready 2.When being bossed around by her schoolmate, the author ________. A.asked others to do the work B.did what she was told C.refused to obey

He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends. My earliest memories of my father are a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and his family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult(成年人)I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if t heir fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard. On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor café. We talked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father’s critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before? The next day dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I’m delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was. 21. Why did the author feel bitter about her father as a young adult? A. A. the author’s son B. the author’s father C. the friend of the author’s father D. the café owner B One type of fish is named salmon(大马哈鱼). There are many different kinds of salmon, but almost all of them mate(交配) in a very strange way. They are born in small, freshwater rivers. They live in the river for a year, and then swim downstream to a bigger river and eventually to the ocean very quickly. While they live in the ocean, salmon are silver coloured. After several years at sea, the salmon grow very long and heavy. Then, as if by magic, they all begin to swim home. Each salmon somehow remembers where it was born and the very same area in the small river. It is a long, difficult journey home. Once the salmon enter fresh, they stop eating. They also change colours. Some salmon turn red, other brown and grey, and some turn pink. Some salmon grow a large bulge on their back, called a hump.
