A

The term “helicopter parents”refers to “a style of parents who are over focused on their children”.Helicopter parents are always making a big push to provide children with every opportunity to succeed, from baby steps at age 1,homework at age 8,college application at age 18,employment issues at age 25 to family problems at age 30,40 or even older. They constantly shadow the child, always directing his behavior, allowing him zero alone time.

Helicopter parenting can develop for a number of reasons.Worries about the economy, the job market, and the world in general can push parents toward taking more control over their child’s life in an attempt to protect them.Adults who felt unloved or ignored as children can overcompensate their own children. When parents see other overinvolved parents,it can cause a similar response. They feel that if they don’t involve themselves in their children’s lives, they are bad parents.

The main problem with helicopter parenting is that it can backfire. To give an example, the house where Mary lived with roommates was broken into and things were stolen.Mary called the landlord(房东) to install an alarm system, but before she could finish the negotiations(协商),her mother rushed in and demanded action.“I felt like my mother ruined my communication with our landlord. We could have gotten it done ourselves. She was well intended but only made me feel annoyed and defeated,”says Mary.

Obviously, overparenting is motivated with the idea of doing good things but it does the exact opposite. In the long run parents are actually damaging their child’s basic skills to deal with matters independently. It makes the child feel lacking in confidence, less competent in dealing with the stresses of life on their own. They’re winning the battle, but actually losing the war.

1.What’s the purpose of helicopter parents’ overparenting?

A.To do something good for their children.

B.To make their children not ignored.

C.To help their children find a good job.

D.To get rid of the pressure from other parents.

答案 A

2.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Children who have helicopter parents live a hard life.

B.Helicopter parenting only happens to very young children.

C.Helicopter parents can protect their children against all problems.

D.Helicopter parents do their children great harm in the long run.

3.What will possibly be discussed in the paragraph that follows?

A.The bad effects of helicopter parenting.

B.How we can avoid being helicopter parents.

C.Different opinions about helicopter parenting.

D.The reasons for the development of helicopter parents.

The U.S.Postal Service(USPS) is losing billions of dollars a year. The government company that delivers “small mail”is losing out to email and other types of electronic communication.First-class mail amount fell from a high point of 104 million pieces in 2000 to just 64 million pieces by 2014.

Congress permits the 600,000-employee USPS to hold a monopoly(垄断) over first-class and standard mail. The company pays no federal, state or local taxes;pays no vehicle fees;and is free from many regulations on other businesses.Despite these advantages, the USPS has lost 52 billion since 2007,and will continue losing money without major reforms.

The problem is that Congress is preventing the USPS from reducing costs as its sales decline, and is blocking efforts to end Saturday service and close unneeded post office https://www.wendangku.net/doc/8a4589044.html,PS also has a costly union-dominated workforce that slows the introduction of new ideas or methods https://www.wendangku.net/doc/8a4589044.html,PS workers earn significantly higher payment than comparable private-sector workers. The answer is to privatize the USPS and open postal markets to competition. With the rise of the Internet, the argument that mail is a natural monopoly that needs government protection is weaker than ever.

Other countries facing declining letter amounts have made reforms.Germany and the Netherlands privatized their national postal companies over a decade ago,and other European countries have followed suit.Britain floated shares of the Royal Mail on its stock exchange in 2013.Some countries, such as Sweden and New Zealand, have not privatized their national postal companies, but they have opened them up to competition.

These reforms have driven efficiency improvements in all of these countries.Additional number of workers have been reduced, productivity has risen and consumers have benefited. Also, note that cost-cutting measures—such as closing tone post offices—are good for both the economy and the environment.

Privatization and competition also encourage new changes. When the USPS monopoly over “extremely urgent”mail was stopped in 1979,we saw an explosion in efficient overnight private delivery by firms such as FedEx.

The government needs to wake up to changing technology, study postal reforms abroad and let businessmen reinvent our out-of-date postal system.

4.What do we know about the USPS?

Fifty years ago,the well-loved musician Bob Dylan played at the Newport Folk Festival and was widely booed(嘘声).The audience may have been unhappy but Dylan’s performance helped change the direction of music and culture in the United States.

The mid-1960s were a time of great change. One such place of change was the world of folk music.Bob Dylan became a symbol of change when he moved from acoustic(原声的) to electric guitar.

Rock music historian Elijah Wald has written a new book about the change. It is called “Dylan Goes Electric.”

“There was a moment in the early 1960s when you could look at the Billboard charts and seven of the top 10 albums were folk records. And Joan Baez,Peter Paul and Mary, the Kingston Trio, all had huge, huge, huge number-one records.”

And then this happened:The “British Invasion”introduced the world to the Beatles and grew a huge fan base for rock music. That worried many folk musicians, says Elijah Wald.

They hoped that Bob Dylan would come to the rescue. However,a new Dylan sound came from the stage.

Bob Dylan had gone electric, and the followers of folk music were not pleased.

“When Dylan went electric,I think one of the issues was the feeling that—wait a minute,he’s gone over to the enemy.”

Folk lovers had looked to Bob Dylan to save their movement from rock and roll. But,author Wald says Dylan felt differently about the music.

“Dylan had always liked rock and roll and Dylan didn’t think of rock and roll as stupid music.”

In fact,Dylan was a Beatles fan.He later said that from the first time he heard the Beatles he knew “they were pointing to the direction where music had to go.”

Beyond the music,Dylan’s performance that night also marked a turn in American culture.

Everyone worries about exams, but test anxiety is in another league, causing such fear that it is impossible to do your best.Does your mind go blank in exams?Do you become distracted?Do you score much lower on exams than on homework? Then you may have what psychologists call test anxiety.

Test anxiety involves severe stress before, during or after exams, making it impossible to do your best.It can make your heart feel as if it is racing, and you may submit to “negative self-talk”,convincing yourself you are going to fail or upset. These stressful thoughts, not surprising, can block your brain’s ability to find what is stored in its memory,as well as making it harder to understand the questions and organize your thoughts. Is it possible to stop test anxiety?

Developing good study habits, understanding the exam format and marking scheme(评分方案) can all help to reduce anxiety. But for a greater effect, other methods are also needed, such as relaxation techniques in which you lie down before the exam, close your eyes and focus on breathing while tensing and relaxing group muscles in turn (legs, arms and stomach).

A study looked at anxious students in math exams and concluded that writing about how worried you feel before the exam may also reduce anxiety.

Be as prepared as possible before the exam, arrive early, and repeat positive statements such as:“Everyone feels anxious;I know I can do this.”Just as in a race,do not look at what everyone else around you is doing.Focus on the paper in front of you.Do a quick skim to evaluate the feel of the overall test.If you feel nervous, take deep breaths and remember that it is just a test.

11.Paragraph 2 mainly talks about .

A.what causes test anxiety

B.how to deal with test anxiety

C.what effects test anxiety brings about

D.why everyone worries about exams

根据文章第二段第一句“Test anxiety involves severe stress...making it impossible to do your best.”和后几句讲的危害“submit to ‘negative self-talk’,block your brain’s ability to...,making it harder to understand the questions and organize your thoughts”等可知,本段主要谈论考试焦虑带来的影响或危害。故选C项。

12.According to Paragraph 4,a study is mentioned to .

A.explain it is easy to get around test anxiety

B.introduce another good approach to handling test anxiety

C.confirm that math exams are more likely to cause anxiety

D.make a conclusion about how to overcome test anxiety

根据文章第四段的“...writing about how worried you feel before the exam may also reduce anxiety.”

13.Which of the following shows the structure of the text?

注:P :Paragraph

On a local level, the damage of the forest required by full-sun fields affects the area’s birds and animals. The shade of the forest trees provides a home for birds and other species(物种)t hat depend on the trees’flowers and fruits.Full-sun coffee growers destroy this forest home.As a result, many species are quickly dying out. On a more global level, the destruction of the rainforest for full-sun coffee fields also threat ens(威胁)human life.Medical research often makes use of the forests’plant and animal life,an d the destruction of such species could prevent researchers from finding cures for certain disease s.In addition, new coffee-growing techniques are poisoning the water locally, and eventually the world’s groundwater. Both locally and globally, the continued spread of full-sun coffee plantations(种植园)could m ean the destruction of the rainforest ecology. The loss of shade trees is already causing a slight change in the world’s climate, and studies show that loss of oxygen-giving trees also leads to ai r pollution and global warming. Moreover, the new growing techniques are contributing to acidic (酸性的)soil conditions. It is obvious that the way much coffee is grown affects many aspects of life, from the local environment to the global ecology. But consumers do have a choice. They can purchase shade-grown coffee whenever possible, although at a higher cost. The future health of the planet and mankind is surely worth more than an inexpensive cup of coffee. 15.

C The Indian government may use 3D paintings as virtual speed-breakers on major highways arid roads, in an attempt to check speeding and careless driving, and eventually make its deadly roads a little safer. “We are trying out 3D paintings used as virtual speed breakers to avoid unnecessary requirements of speed breakers,” India's transport minister Nitin Gadkari tweeted. The visual illusions (幻象)are supposed to encourage drivers to slow down automatically. Earlier this month, India had ordered the removal of all speed breakers from highways, which are considered to be a danger to safety for high-speed vehicles. India has the highest number of road accident deaths in the world. According to the World Health Organisation, over 200,00 people are killed by road accidents due to poor application of road safety laws. This is considerably higher than its official figures of 141,526 for 2014. The use of visual illusions as speed breakers was first pioneered in the American city of Philadelphia in 2008, as part of a campaign against speeding motorists. The technique has also been tried out in China to create floating 3D crossings. In India, cities such as Ahmedabad and Chennai have already experimented with 3D zebra crossings in the last one year. In Ahmedabad for instance, two artists, mother and daughter have painted 3D crosswalks in the first few months of this year. The artists say their motto is “to increase the attention of drivers”, and that the concept has been successfully tested in zones where accidents easily occur on a highway.” However, critics argue that once drivers know that these speed breakers arc visual illusions, they may ignore them. Others also point out that India's decision does not consider the safety of a large number of walkers. In the end, the new policy may be just one step towards improving road safety. 10. The author explains the experiment of 3D zebra crossings in India by . A. giving examples. B. analysing causes. C. providing figures. D. making comparisons. D

The underlined word “they/it/…” in paragraph… refers to… … 2. The sentence “… …” in paragraph … means ….; The example of … …in para….is used to illustrate/show … …. 3. The last paragraph mainly tell us that … …; The purpose of writing Paragraph … is …. …. 4. How is the passage organized?;Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage? The twentieth century saw greater changes than any century before changes for the better, changes for the worse, changes that brought a lot of benefits to human beings, changes that put man in danger .Many things caused the changes, but, in my opinion, the most important was the progress in science.

如:at first…then…few minutes later…) 结尾已为你写好 ____________________________________________________________________________ About two minutes later I stopped a passing car and took the old man to the nearest hospital.

1. What is the right order of the steps in doing ...? 2. The second paragraph is developed by ... 3. How is the passage mainly organized/ developed? 4. The author answers the question raised in the first paragraph with ... 5. Which of the following picture shows the structure of the passage? 6. 通常以t herefore, as a result, thus, so, That is why… 通常以moreover, furthermore, what’s more, what’s the most important, most important of all, most importantly等词汇或短语为标志,这些词汇或短语后面出现的信息是被强调的信息,即主题信息出现的地方;五、例证处。通常以for example, for instance, Let’s take…, Consider… 通常以firstly, secondly…finally, some…others…, for one thin g…for another, on the one hand…on the other hand等组合为标志,这些组合都是支持性的细节信息,位于这些组合前后的句子一般都是这些细节信息所要支持的主题。

2017届高三二轮复习英语精品资料【练案】 专题7 阅读理解Ⅳ:篇章结构题 1.[2016·北京卷] D Why college is not home The college years are supposed to be a time for important growth in autonomy(自主性) and the development of adult identity. However, now they are becoming an extended period of adolescence, during which many of today's students are not shouldered with adult responsibilities. For previous generations, college was a decisive break from parental control; guidance and support needed to come from people of the same age and from within. In the past two decades, however, continued connection with and dependence on family, thanks to cellphones, e-mail and social media, have increased significantly. Some parents go so far as to help with coursework. Instead of promoting the idea of college as a passage from the shelter of the family to autonomy and adult responsibility, universities have given in to the idea that they should provide the same environment as that of the home. To prepare for increased autonomy and responsibility, college needs to be a time of exploration and experimentation. This process involves “trying on ” new ways of thinking about oneself both intellectually(在思维方面) and personally. While we should provide “safe spaces” within colleges, we must also make it safe to express opinions and challenge majority views. Intellectual growth and flexibility are fostered by strict debate and questioning. Learning to deal with the social world is equally important. Because a college community(群体) differs from the family, many students will struggle to find a sense of belonging. If students rely on administrators to regulate their social behaviour and thinking pattern, they are not facing the challenge of finding an identity within a larger and complex community. Moreover, the tendency for universities to monitor and shape student behaviour runs up against another characteristic of young adults: the response to being controlled by their elders. If acceptable social behaviour is too strictly defined(规定) and controlled, the insensitive or

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears. One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials(尝试) increase the length of time we will remember it. In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star”and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn. The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood. The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习) for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one's future development. 1.The author explains the law of over learning by() A.presenting research findings

D Integrity Integrity is the quality of being honest and strong about what you believe to be right. The concept of integrity has played a key role in moral philosophy throughout history and is promoted in all societies because of its importance to social relations. Individual integrity is vital to society, one that enables people to make use of their capacity for critical reflection, does not force people to take up particular roles and does not encourage individuals to betray each other. Besides, societies can be favorable to the development of individual integrity. Individual integrity can lift up the spirits of the entire society. It can shape the lives of people living in a particular society, the lives of all fellow people and, in its broadest sense, even the destiny(命运) of a nation. By contrast, if those living in the society are corrupt, it could have bad effects, jeopardizing the healthy morality of the society. On the other hand, a society can be favorable to the development of individual integrity. Society expects and requires integrity. A society consisting of people of integrity, and people who never compromise on their principles, could have a positive mark on the personal development of its members. Being a part of such a morally lively community could serve as a basis for absorbing traits of good character. This could be of a distinct advantage to any individuals in the society. However, some social structures are of the wrong sort for some individuals to pursue(追求) integrity. If that is the case, we have to ask questions about the moral nature of society first before raising questions about individual integrity. Questions about integrity may turn out to be about what kind of society it is, rather than about the relationship between individual interests and characteristics of a society. The pursuit of adequate individual integrity often depends, not so much on understanding who one is and what one believes and is committed to, but rather understanding what one’s society is and imagining wh at it could be. Under no circumstances can we underestimate the importance of human integrity in a society. People, who are honest, trustworthy, compassionate and caring, are the factors decisive in the growth of individuals as well as the development of a society. 70. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in this passage? A. B. C. D. 1
