A dog sheltered a newborn baby abandoned by its 14-year-old mother in a field in rural Argentina until the boy was rescued, a doctor said on August 22 .

The abandoned baby was found in a field with this dog and her newborn puppies.

A man of a rural area outside La Plata called police late Wednesday night to say that he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house.

The man went outside and found the baby lying beside the dog and its six newborn puppies, Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Province of Buenos Aires, told CNN.

The temperature was a chilly 37 degrees, Salcedo said.

The dog had apparently carried the baby some 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned him to where the puppies were gathered, police said.

"She took it like a puppy and rescued it," Salcedo said, "the doctors told us if she hadn't done this, he would have died."

"The dog is a hero to us."

Dr. Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero Hospital in La Plata, told CNN that police showed up at the hospital at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday with the baby who doctors say was only a few hours old.

Though the baby had slight cuts and bruises and was bleeding from his mouth, he was in good shape, Melia said.

The next morning, the child's mother was driven by a neighbor to the hospital and told authorities the 8 pound, 13 ounce infant is hers, Melia said.

The teenager was immediately given psychological treatment and was hospitalized, he said. She has said little about the incident.

The child has been sent to a children's hospital in La Plata, 37 miles from Buenos Aires.

41. How was the baby when he was found?

A. He was badly ill.

B. He was dying.

C. There was nothing serious with him

D. He had lost a lot of blood.

42. What’s the text mainly about?

A. A baby was rescued by a dog.

B. A baby was abandoned by its mother.

C. How an abandoned baby was saved by doctors.

D. Dogs are heroes to human beings.

43. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. The baby together with its mother has been sent to a hospital.

B. The baby was born just a few hours ago.

C. A man found the baby and took it to the hospital at once.

For Roy Johnson, a senior magazine editor, the latest indignity(侮辱)came after a recent dinner at a fancy restaurant in the wealthy New York City suburb where he and his family live. First the parking valet handed him the keys to his Jaguar instead of fetching the car. Then an elderly white couple came out and handed him the keys to their black Mercedes-Benz. ―It took them a while to realize that I was not a valet,‖ says Johnson. ―It didn’t matter that I was dressed for dinner and had paid a handsome price for the meal, just as he had. What mattered was that I didn’t fit his idea of someone who could be equal to him.‖

Such incidents, which are depressingly familiar to African-Americans of all ages, incomes and social classes, help explain why black and white attitudes often differ so completely. A recent survey found that 68 percent of blacks believe racism(种族歧视)is still a major problem in America. Only 38 percent of whites agreed.

Many Americans find the gulf between blacks and whites confusing. After all, official separation is a bad memory and 40 years of laws, policies and court decisions have helped African-Americans make significant progress toward equal opportunity. Indeed, a black man born in Harlem could be the nation’s next president.

It is obvious that in the everyday encounters(不愉快的遭遇) African-Americans have with racial prejudice(偏见)and discrimination like the valet parking incident, such encounters often strike whites as unimportant misunderstandings. But they remind blacks that they are often dismissed as

less intelligent, less hardworking, less honest and less likely to succeed.

―What is amazing to me is the number of whites who express surprise that any of this happens,‖ observes Mary Frances Berry, chairperson of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

44. The word ―valet‖ in the first paragraph most probably means ________.

A. a restaurant owner

B. a driver of expensive cars

C. a wealthy-looking gentleman

D. a restaurant employee taking care of the cars of the diners

A. Most American whites express surprise at such incidents

B. there is no more official separation in the US nowadays

C. some government officials have very bad memories

D. a black man born in Harlem will be the next US president

46. It is implied in the passage that many white people deny the presence of racism in the US because ________.

A. they tend not to regard instances of racism as serious mistakes

B. they have never seen any instance of racism in their country

C. they believe that racism is all history

D. they have always treated black people as their equals

47. Judging from the context, the most possible meaning of the underlined word observes in the last paragraph is ________.

A. comments

B. explains

C. describes

D. reports

Sony and Toyota are struggling. But one brand name is thriving (繁荣)in Japan during the economic slowdown —Mickey Mouse.

According to the company that runs Tokyo Disneyland, Japan's busiest theme park will be more packed than ever over Christmas and New Year's Day. Despite the bad economy, it's already been a record year for an escape that's cheaper than the average night out in pricey Tokyo.

"Here, economic depression seems a world away," visitor Namie Katsunuma said as she munched on(嚼)a bowl of popcorn. "This is the only place where I can totally forget the economic worries and hardship of my life."

The single mother's salary at an auto factory was cut in November but, with her $500 yearly pass in hand, she makes the 95-km journey from her home to Tokyo Disneyland every couple of months.

The park's operator, Oriental Land Co, estimates a record 26.5 million people will visit Tokyo Disneyland and its nearby sister park, Disneysea, during the financial year ending in March. The company is forecasting sales of a record $4.2 billion, up almost 10 percent.

"In a way, the economy works well for Tokyo Disneyland," said Hiroshi Watanabe, an economist at the Tokyo-based Daiwa Research Institute. "Because of the economic depression, people have stopped buying cars and houses or going to Hawaii, and Tokyo Disneyland offers an affordable and pleasant alternative."

Around the world, Disney's theme parks have been a bright spot for the brand this year as people seem to look for an escape from bad times.

One of my favorite posters says, "Life is a test. It is only a test. Had this been a real life, you would have been instructed where to go and what to do." Whenever I think of this humorous bit of wisdom, it reminds me not to take my life so seriously.

When you look at life and its many challenges as a test, or series of tests, you begin to see each issue you face as an opportunity to grow, a chance to discover more about life. Whether you're being bombarded(攻击) with problems, responsibilities, even insurmountable(不能超越的) difficulties, when looked at as a test, you always have a chance to succeed, in the sense of overcoming what is challenging you. If, on the other hand, you see each new issue you face as a serious battle that must be won in order to survive, you're probably in for(遭遇)a very rocky journey. The only time you're likely to be happy is when everything is working out just right. And we all know how often that happens.

As an experiment, see if you can apply this idea to something you are forced to deal with. Perhaps you have much pressure from your parents or you have a demanding boss. See if you can redefine the issue you face from being a "problem" to being a test. Rather than struggling with your issue, see if there is something you can learn from it. Ask yourself, "Why is this an issue in my life? What would it mean and what would be involved to overcome it? Could I possibly look at this issue any differently? Can I see it as a test of some kind?"

If you give this strategy a try, you may be surprised at your changed responses. It will become far more acceptable to me to accept things as they are.

52. When you begin to look at life as a test, you will find .

A. you are bombarded with problems and responsibilities

B. the result of the test is so good that you are delighted

C. you have many opportunities to grow

D. you have to go to school to take tests everyday

53. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the author?

A. When you look at life as a test, you have a chance to deal with problems you face.

B. When you take life seriously, you are more likely to succeed and become happy.

C. When you see each problem a serious battle, you have more chances to survive.

D. When everything is working out just right, you can know how often it happens.

54. According to the passage, you'd better look at life as a test when_____.

A. you try to get the meaning of the poster

B. you have an easygoing boss

C. you are carrying out an experiment

D. you are in a rocky journey

55. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A. My Favorite Poster

B. Take Life Seriously

C. Face Challenge of Life

D. Consider Life As a Test

56. According to the passage, what is the author’s attitude towards life?

A. He cares much about his life.

B. He doesn’t take his life seriously.

C. He knows where to go and what to do.

D. He thinks life is full of humorous wisdom.

Against the supposition that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate., scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror sunlight into space.

This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest fires to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions. Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade. Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over the next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season. Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming, while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling. This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate. Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.

Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming. Ozone(臭氧)levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice, darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in. the following spring, however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer trees covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.

―We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.‖ Scientists tracked the change in the amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature. Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years. Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results. Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicted, 0.5 watts per square meter will be sent back into space. The net effect is cooling. Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth.

57. According to the new findings, taking steps to prevent northern forest fires may _______ .

A. result in a warming climate

B. cause the forest fires to occur more frequently

C. lead to a longer fire season

D. protect the forests and the environment there

58. The following are all the immediate effects after a forest fire EXCEPT _______ .

A. large amounts of greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere

B. the levels of ozone which is a type of oxygen increase

C. snow on the ground mirrors more sunlight back into space

D. ashes from the fire fall on the ice surface and take in more radiation from the sun

59. Earlier studies about northern forest fires _______ .

A. analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate

B. indicate that forest fires will pollute the atmosphere

C. suggest that people should take measures to protect environment

D. suggest that the fires will speed up climate warming

60. From the passage we can draw a conclusion that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia may _______ .

A. warm the climate as the supposition goes

B. allow more snow to reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climate

C. destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea ice

D. help to gain more energy rather than release more energy

A.There are few statues in the Middle East.

B.Art is a good means for people to know about religions.

C.Artists express their feelings and opinions in their works.

D.People know more about our culture through learning art history.

E.Art is more objective than history itself.

F.Art history provides information of different places and people.

A study of art history might be a good way to learn more about a culture than is possible to learn in general history classes. Most typical history courses concentrate on politics, economics and war. But art history focuses on much more than this because art reflects not only the political values of

In addition, information about the daily activities of our ancestors – or of people very different from our own – can be provided by art. In short, art expresses the essential qualities of a time and a place, and a study of it clearly offers us a deeper understanding than can be found in most

In history books, objective information about the political life of a country is presented; that is, facts about politics are given, but opinions are not expressed. Art, on the other hand, is subjective: it reflects emotions and opinions. The great Spanish painter Francisco Goya was perhaps the first truly ―political‖ artist. In his well-known painting The Third of May 1808, he criticized the Spanish government for its misuse of power over people. Over a hundred years later, symbolic

images were used in Pablo Picasso’s Guernica to express the horror of war. Meanwhile, on another continent, the powerful paintings of Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros –as well as the works of Alfredo Ramos Martins –depicted these Mexican

In the same way, art can reflect a culture’s religious beliefs. For hundreds of years in Europe, religious art was almost the only type of art that existed. Churches and other religious buildings were filled with paintings that depicted people and stories from the Bible. Although most people

By contrast, one of the main characteristics of art in the Middle East was (and still is) its absence of human and animal images. This reflects the Islamic belief that statues are unholy.

第一节短文改错(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

Some students think a difficult exam just like a challenge and the more difficult it is, the more better it will be. They say a difficult exam can helps students to find out where they are weak in their studies and improve their learning methods.

Others, however, are against a difficult exam. In their opinion, if it is very difficult, they may become discourage and feel terribly about their studies.

I prefer an exam neither too difficult nor too easy, a very easy exam is not good for teachers to learn how we are getting with our studies, but too difficult exam will make us lose our heart.
