Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay based on the picture below. You should start your essay with a brief description of the picture and then discuss what qualities an employer should look for in job applicants. You should give sound arguments to support your views and write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.

Does a higher degree mean better qualifications? According to some employers, it does. As the picture shows, a manager is explaining to a job seeker why he is turned down: “Sorry, kid. Your resume looks good, but you only have a master’s degree. All the other applicants are Ph. D.s.”

In my view, an employer should look for such traits as creativity, teamwork and communication skills in a job applicant. First, an employee is constantly confronted with unexpected problems in the workplace, which requires him / her to be creative. Second, as most jobs rely on close cooperation, a willingness to work together with others is an indispensable quality. Last, an employee needs to interact with his / her co-workers, superiors and customers, so the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, is of vital importance.

Diplomas are indeed important, but it doesn’t mean that the higher the degree the better-qualified a job seeker. Therefore an employer should place more weight on such qualities in a prospective employee as the ability to work with others, to communicate effectively and to solve problems in a creative way. (188 words)

1. Does a higher degree mean better qualifications?

2. turn down,拒绝。

3. be confronted with,面临(困难、问题等)。

4. ---, which requires him / her to be creative.

5. interact with,与--- 交流。

6. both verbally and in writing,

7. be of vital importance,

8. Diplomas are indeed important, but it doesn’t mean that the higher the degree the better-qualified a job seeker.

9. place more weight on,更加重视。

10. a prospective employee,

Academic qualification, as a job a stepping-stone, is a n essential factor during the job hunting. Some people think that the highly educated must be able to find a good job, because education can prove that a person has a good capacity. Therefore, it is commonly believe

that a job seeker with a master degree must be easier to find a promising job than a un dergraduate. However, now the company interviewers generally prefer to required a even h igher academic qualification, like a doctor degree. Way back to past centuries, and even today, tribal people engage in dancing as a form of worship or as a part of aceremony in a celebration. On such occasions, dancing can be very solemn. In modern times, dancing appeals to different people for different reasons. Young people often include dancing in parties or at other social gatherings. It seems to be anincentive for them to gather. They look forward to dancing into the night during partieswithout feeling fatigue. To the elderly, the steps in dancing are reduced with a slower tempo in the music. Theygather in community centers to learn folk dance and, at the same time, to know one anotherin such informal interactions. Personally, I doubt the effectiveness of dancing as a major role in keeping one's body healthyand in good shape. Activities such as jogging, swimming and playing games are more effectivefor attaining good health. They can burn off calories in our bodies and develop our muscles. [A] Why is a neuroscientist here debating single-sex schooling? Honestly, I had no fixed ideas on the topic when I started researching it for my book, Pink Brain, Blue Brain. But any discussion of gender differences in children inevitably leads to this debate, so I felt compelled to dive into the research data on single-sex schooling. I read every study I could, weighed the existing evidence, and ultimately concluded that single-sex education is not the answer to gender gaps in achievement—or the best way forward for today’s young people. After my book was published, I met several developmental and cognitive psychologists whose work was addressing gender and education from different angles, and we published a peer-reviewed Education Forum piece in Science magazine with the provocative title, “The Pseudoscience of Single-Sex Education.”[B] We showed that three lines of research used to justify single-sex schooling—educational, neuroscience, and social psychology—all fail to support its alleged benefits, and so the widely-held view that gender separation is somehow better for boys, girls, or both is nothing more than a myth.
