Comedian Shelley Berman，who won gold records and appeared on top television shows in the 1950s and 1960s，died at the age of 92．Berman was a pioneer of a new brand of comedy that could arouse laughter from such matters as air travel discomforts and small children answering the telephone．

Comedy was not a childhood ambition for him．“I had dreams of being an actor，”he said in a 1960 interview．“For 10 years I tried，picking up small jobs in summer stock and TV．I had a hard time of it．”At last，he put together a 20-minute routine and performed at the Chicago nightclub，Mister Kelly’s．Berman’s success in Chicago led to bookings in Las Vegas．

Berman made his appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1959．That year he issued his first album Inside Shelly Berman．It won a gold record and received the first-ever Grammy Award for the spoken word．Along with his busy schedule in nightclubs，he achieved his first ambition to be an actor．He appeared in a Broadway play The Boys Against the Girls in 1959 and a musical A Family Affair in 1962．His film debut(首秀)came in 1964 with the film The Best Man．

Berman’s comedy career stopped in 1963．He was performing his act before an audience for a documentary

—style NBC show，when a telephone ringing interrupted him；it was the second night it happened．He stormed backstage and shouted at everyone in sight．His outburst was included in the telecast．The bookings fell off，and Berman returned to acting，but with little luck．He and his wife Sarah were forced to file for bankruptcy(破产)，and he began a long

There are also new business and sport terms that have been in use for a while，such as“onboarding”and

“bunny”．Now“Hive Mind”，which started as a biological term to describe places of bees and ants，has developed to define“the collective thoughts，ideas，and opinions of a group of people(such as Internet users)regarded as functioning together as a single mind”．

Let’s get to a spicy conclusion with“sriracha”，which is defined as“a pungent sauce(辣酱)that is made from hot peppers mixed with usually garlic，sugar，salt and vinegar and that is typically used as a condiment(调料)”．“Our job as lexicographers(词典编纂者)is to follow the development of language，defining the words people are likely to meet．These new words have been added to the dictionary because they have established themselves in the English language，and are part of the current active vocabulary of America．”
