三. Reading:

A

So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for children that which only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that “reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible”.

Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity. It can be seen and observed.

Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is

not open to public scrutiny.

If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children.”

When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.

D. teachers can make their teaching activities observable

3. The underlined word “scrutiny” most probably means “_____”.

A. hope

B. observation

4. According to the passage, learning to read will no longer be a difficult task when ______.

B. teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable

C. teachers help children in the search for knowledge

D. reading enriches children’s experience

5. The main idea of the passage is that ______.

A. teachers should do as little as possible in helping students learn to read

B. teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possible

C. reading ability is something acquired rather than taught

D. reading is more complicated than generally believed

A Tight Situation

Sometimes funny memories are the most special way to remember a beloved lover. It helps take away some of the feeling of loss. Before he passed away, my husband loved to share this story with our friends. Now, it makes me smile to share this story with you.

Our neighbor’s son was getting married in 1971 at a church, and we were invited. We immediately rushed into the store, and I bought a nice pink dress with a jacket. The dress was a little tight, but I had a month before the June 30 wedding and I would lose a few pounds.

June 29 came and, of course, I had not lost a single pound; in fact, I had gained two. But I thought a new girdle would solve my problem. So on our way to the wedding, we stopped once again at the store. I ran in and told the clerk I needed a large girdle.

The clerk turned the box around with the girdle, marked “L”, and asked if I would like to try

it on. “Oh, no, large will fit just right. I won’t need to try it on.”

The next morning was hot, so I waited to get dressed until about forty-five minutes before the time to go. I opened the girdle box only to find a new $49.95 girdle in a small size. Since it was too late to find another one and the dress wouldn’t fit right without a girdle, a fight broke out between me and the girdle. Have you ever tried to shake twenty pounds of potatoes into a five-pound bag? Finally, my husband, laughing like crazy, got hold of each side and shook me down into it, and I was ready to go.

As we walked into the church, he asked if I could make it. Now, he was getting worried because I was breathing strangely. I told him that it would last one hour, twenty-two minutes and eight and one half seconds----the minister blessed everything except my girdle!

My knees were blue and my legs lost all feeling. My husband was asking questions and trying to comfort me.

As soon as the minister pronounced them married, I rushed out with my husband. “Please, just get me out of here!” I said.

We ran out to our car, and once there he opened the front and back passenger doors against the next car. Right there, before God and the wedding party, I took off that girdle. Then the girdle flew out of my hand and landed under the car next to ours. My husband was laughing very hard. We drove, finally, away.

Over the years, he and I had often wondered what the people of that church thought the next morning when they found $49.95, small-sized girdle in their parking lot.

C

During the twentieth century there has been a great change in the lives of women. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century probably would have been in her mid twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which chance and health made it unusual for her to find paid work. Today, many women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s you ngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five. She is expected to live another

thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until sixty.

This is an important change in women’s economic position. Even a few years ago, most girls left school and took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school leaving age is sixteen; many girls stay at school after that age, and though women may marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to full or part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage relationships, with the husband accepting

a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life.

9. One reason why a woman of today may take a job is that she _____.

A. is younger when her children are old enough to look after themselves

B. does not like children herself

C. needn’t worry about food for her children

D. can be free from family duties when she reaches sixty

10. Many girls are now likely to _____.

A. give up their jobs for good after they are married

B. leave school as soon as they can

C. marry so that they can get a job

D. continue working until they are going to have a baby

D

To face the music

Like every language, American English is full of special expressions, phrases that come from the day-to-day life of the people and develop in their own way. Our expression today is “to face the music”.

When someone says, “Well, I guess I’ll have to face the music.” it does not mean he’s planning to go to the concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you didn’t do this or that. Sour music in deed, but it has to be faced. At sometime or another every one of us has had to face the music, especially as children. We can all remember father’s angry voice, “ I want to talk to you,” and only because we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was!

The phrase “to face the music” is familiar to every American, young or old. It is at least 100 years old. And where did this expression come from? The first explanation comes from the American novelist, James Fenimore Cooper. He said, in 1851, that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on the stage. When they got their cue to go on, they often said, “Well, it’s time to face the music.” And that is exactly what they did----facing the orchestra which was just below them. And an actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of an audience that might be friendly or perhaps hostile, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So he expression “to face the music” came to mean “ having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.

Other explanations about the expression go back to the army. When the men faced inspection by their leader, the soldiers would be worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean, shinny enough to pass inspection? Still the men had to go on and face the music of the band as well as the inspection. What else could they do?

Another army explanation is more closely related to the idea of facing the results and accepting the responsibility for something that should not have been done. As, for example, when a man is forced out of the army because he did something terrible, he is dishonored. The band does not play. Only the drums tap a sad, slow beat. The soldier is forced to leave, facing such music as it is and facing the back of his horse.

11. According to the passage, how many ways does the phrase “to face the music” come from?

A. 1

B. 2

C. 3

D. 4

12. What’s the meaning of “to face the music”?

A. To face something far less pleasant.

B. To face the stage.

C. To face the back of one’s horse.

D. To face one’s leader.

13. In which condition would we face the music?

A. When we are playing basketball.

B. When we are making a speech in public.

C. When we are having a party.

D. When we are talking with somebody.

14. The underlined word in the third paragraph means _____.

A. unfriendly

B. dislike

C. unimportant

D. unnecessary

15. Which of the following sentences is not true according to the passage?

A. The explanation to the phrase “to face the music” is closely related with the army life.

B. When a man is forced out of the army, the band doesn’t play.

C. The first exp lanation to the phrase “to face the music” comes from an American novelist.

高一下学期英语6月月考试卷 一、阅读理解 1. 阅读理解 Scientists used to explore on the surface of the ocean. Now they are exploring below the surface, too. They want to know about ocean water and the plant and animal life deep in the ocean. In 1934 the scientist William Beebe dived 3000 feet below the surface in a hollow steel ball. In 1935 August Piccard dived 10330 feet In I960 his son Jean dived to a depth of 35800 feet. All these early dives were deep. But the divers could not stay down for very long. They had to come back up to the surface after a few seconds. Scientists needed to stay down longer to study life below surface. Gradually they succeeded. Cousteau, a Frenchman, was able to keep men down to a depth of 36 feet for one month and to a depth of 90 feet for a week. Now scientists are developing even better equipment. With this new equipment, men can stay below the surface for days or even weeks. In 1962 Cousteau set up a research station 35 feet below the surface. Then, in 1964, he set up another station on the ocean floor of the Red Sea. This was the first undersea station to operate without help from the surface. Many countries are now studying undersea living. The former Soviet Union has an undersea laboratory in the Crimean Sea. The United States has a

辽宁省实验中学分校2013-2014学年高二6月月考 英语试题 Word版含答案

第一部分:听力(1-20题略) 第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment. Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas. There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control. Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and b uying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free. 21. Which of the following is the author most probably in favor of? A. Motor racing in the desert. B. Cycling around a lake. C. Playing basketball in a gym. D. Swimming in a sports center. 22. What do we know about golf from the passage? A. It is popular in Portugal and Spain. B. It causes water shortages around the world. C. It needs water and electricity to keep its courses green. D. It pollutes the earth with chemicals and wastes. 23. The author uses power walking as an example mainly because _________. A. It uses fewer resources. B. It improves our health. C. It is an outdoor sport. D. It is suggested by experts. 24.
