When we want to tell other people what we think, we can do it with the help of words. We can also do it in many other ways, too. Sometimes we move our heads up and down when we want to say “yes”, and we shake our heads when we want to say “no”. Some people can’t hear or speak. They talk with the help of gestures. People fro m other countries often have to do it if they don’t know your language.

Here is a story. An American was once having his holiday in Italy, but he could not speak Italian. One day he went to a restaurant and sat down at a table. When the waiter came, the American opened his mouth, put his fingers in it and took them out again. In this way he wanted to say “Bring me something to eat”. The waiter soon brought him a cup of tea. The American shook his head and the waiter understood that he didn’t want tea. So h e took it away and brought him a glass of milk. The American shook his head again. He was very hungry now and looked sad. He was just going to leave the restaurant when another man came in. When this man saw the waiter, he put his hands on his stomach. In a few minutes there was a large plate of bread and meat on the table in front of him.

About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier; only about one in two hundred is affected (影响) in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman!

There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows(阴影) of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In few cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green —a strange world

indeed.

Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell diffe rence between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color. Some insects (昆虫) have favorite colors. Mosquitoes (蚊子) prefer blue to yellow.

A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the help of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the help of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the hidden colors around us.

24. The passage is mainly about .

A. color blindness

B. women being luckier than men

C. color and its surprising effects.

D. danger caused by color blindness

25. According to the passage, with the help of the “cones”, we can .

A. tell different shapes

B. kill mosquitoes

C. see in a weak light

D. tell orange from yellow

26. Which of the statements (陈述) about the color- blind is TRUE?

A. None of them can see deep red

B. None of them can tell the difference between blue and green.

C. All of them see everything in shades of green.

D. Not all of them have the same problem in recognizing color.

27. We can attract and kill mosquitoes by using a .

A. red light

B. blue light

C. yellow light

D. green light

What do you wear when going to work? Do you wear a uniform or do you just dress yourself casually? I don’t pay special attention to what to wear but I sometimes wonder: could clothing really advance my career?

According to Accountancy firm PwC, appearance is very important. They say people make up their mind about someone in just 30 seconds. What you wear can help you be remembered for the right reasons.

Image advisers say what you wear is a big part of your personal brand. But for many people what should matter is whether you can do your job, rather than your choice of clothing.

Karen Pine, a psychology professor at a university in the UK believes women, who wear improperly to work, say very short skirts, are judged to be less competent(胜任的) and less likely to get a promotion. So low-cut dresses and tight-fitting clothes are a no-no, unless you’re in show business.

And men aren’t off the hook when it comes to dress code(衣着规则) either. Pine says that men are considered less successful if they wear an off-the-shelf suit, while equally suitable candidates who wear a tailor-made suit are more likely to get a promotion.

However, clothes are about more than just appearances. They can even cause emotional effects. For instance, proper dressing can boost people’s self-esteem to a certain extent and make them more confident.

32. What might people think of a worker who wears a very short sk

irt in the office?

A. They are not able to do their job properly.

B. They are easy to g et along well with.

C. They are competent to do their jobs well.

D. They are hard to get along with.

33. What does the underlined phrase “off the hook” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

A. not putting the phone back suitably

B. not being caught by a net

C. escaping from a difficult situation

D. free from any risks

34. Apart from making you look good, how can clothes benefit you?

A. Free you from any trouble.

B. Make you become more outgoing.

C. Make you get along well with people.

D. Boost your self-esteem

35. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. The bad effect of clothes on people.

B. How clothes benefit people.

C. Women’s choices of clothes.

D. How people think of clothes.
