How do you know if your home is an easy aim for thefts (偷窃)? Around the holidays, many

families don't consider taking proper measures to prevent their homes from suffering holiday thefts. With just a few simple steps, you can better make sure of the safety of your home during all of the holiday celebrations. Here are a few tips for making it difficult to tell you are away from home.

● Either have a trusted neighbor pick up your mail and newspapers, or tell your mailperson to hold your

mail until you return. Nothing says "Hey, we are not home!" like when your postbox is filled with all kinds of

mails and you have many different newspapers in your driveway.

● Set several different lights in your house on random timers (随机定时器). Don't leave your

outdoor lights

on all the time. Instead, put your outside lights on timers to be on during the nights. If an outdoor light remains

on for days at a time, it means that nobody is home to turn it off.

● If you have pets that you are not taking with you on vacation, leave them with a friend, rather than having

someone come into your house every day to take care of them. When thefts see a neighbor or friend entering

your house every day, they will know you are not home.

● Close all your curtains wh en you leave town. This is effective to deter possible thefts, as no one can see

what is in your house. If they don't know what there is to take, then the risk is even greater for them to break

in.

This article just has suggested a few tips to help you keep your house safe while you are on holiday. Nothing can truly protect your home unless you have it monitored by a professional home security system.

56.According to the passage, which of the following statements is not true when you are on holiday?

A. You should have lights on in an irregular way.

B. You must quickly send an email to your friends.

C. You had better equip your home with security system.

D. You should consider taking some measures to protect your home.

57.The underlined word “deter” probably means__________.

A. discover

B. surprise

C. discourage

D. attract

58.What is the main idea of the passage?

A. To have friends pick up all kinds of emails.

B. To let the outdoor lights on all the time.

C. To ask good neighbors to take care of pets every day.

D. To tell us how to prevent the thefts around the holidays.

The first time you meet someone, in the first moment you form an impression in your mind of that person. Your reactions to other people, however, are really just barometers(标志) for how you see yourself. Your reactions to others say more about you than they do about others. You cannot really love or hate about yourself. We are usually drawn to those who are most like us and tend to dislike those who display those aspects of ourselves that we dislike.

Therefore, you can allow others to be the mirror to see more clearly your own feelings of self-worth. And, you can view the people you judge negatively as mirrors to show you what you are not accepting about yourself.

To live peacefully with others, you will need to learn tolerance. A big challenge is to shift your judgment of others to a lifelong exploration of yourself. Your task is to assess all the decisions, judgments you make onto others and to begin to view them as clues to how you can help yourself and become whole.

I recently has a business lunch with a man who displayed objectionable table manners. My first reaction was to judge him as offensive and his table manners as disgusting. When I noticed that I was judging him, I stopped and asked myself what I was feeling. I discovered that I was embarrassed to be seen with someone who was chewing with his mouth open and loudly blowing his nose. I was astonished to find how much I cared about how the other people in the restaurant judged me.

Remember that your judgment of someone will not serve as a protective shield against you becoming like him. Although I judge my lunch partner as offensive, it does not prevent me from ever looking or acting like him. In the same way, my tolerance to him would not cause me to suddenly begin chewing my food with my mouth open.

When you approach life in this manner, those whom you hate very much as well as those you admire and love can be seen as mirrors, guiding you to discover parts of yourself that you dislike and to embrace your greatest quality.

63. In the writer’s opinion, when we judge others, we are really__________.

A.treating them in a polite way

B.telling them what they should do

C.showing what we ourselves are

D.guiding ourselves to know them

64.Why did the writer feel bad when the lunch partner was behaving terribly?

A. Because he was afraid he himself might get the bad habits.

B. Because he was too shy to speak his opinions out right there.

C. Because he was afraid he might be thought badly of by others.

D. Because he was too angry to go on with his lunch any more.

65. What would the writer do at last according to the passage?

A. He would just let it go as it was and say nothing.

B. He would leave the table as soon as he could.

C. He would explain to others what was really happening.

D. He would tell his lunch partner to stop doing the terrible things.

66.What is the purpose of writing the passage?

A. To tell us a story that happened to the writer himself.

B. To advise us to have the right attitude towards others.

C. To ask us not to behave rudely in some public places.

D. To give us the reasonable way to chat with other people.

If you bought some candy months ago but never ate it, how can you tell whether it’s still safe to eat? The easiest way is to check the “use-by dates”(保质期) printed on the wrapper. If that date has already passed, you’re likely to throw the candy away. But is that really necessary?

According to a new report from the US Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), tons

of food is wasted each year, largely because people don’t fully understand what “expiration dates”, or “use-by dates”, actually mean.

Food dating was introduced in the 1970s because consumers wanted more information about the things that they were eating. When they first showed up, “use-by dates” were only supposed to indicate freshness because producers wanted their products to be tasted in their best conditions.

But the truth is that th ese dates aren’t related to the risk of food poisoning or food-born illness, according to Time News. However, most customers misinterpreted “use-by dates” and related them to the safety of the food, and they still largely do now.

Eggs, for example, can still be eaten three to five weeks after purchase, even though the “use-by date” is much earlier. When their “use-by dates” pass, strawberry-flavored drinks may lose their red color and biscuits may lose their good taste, but they are not harmful.

“It’s a confusing subject, the difference between food quality and food safety,” said Jena Roberts, vice president of National Food Lab, a US food testing company. “Even in the food industry I have colleagues who get confused.”

This is why scientists are calling for a standard explanation to be printed following the “use-by dates”. “We want this to be clearly communicated so consumers are not misunderstanding the data and contributing to a lot of waste,” said Dana Gunders, a staff scientist with the NRDC.

But this won’t be a mistake that is easy to correct since people have believed it for so long. Another problem is that the quality levels of different foods change differently – some are still safe to eat long after their use-by date while others are not.

As a result, food industry officials are now thinking of changing the use -by date to a date indicating when food is most likely to go bad.

56.The use-by date was first intended to__________.

A. tell the freshness of food

B. show the safety of food

C. give a warning of food poisoning

D. indicate the relation between food and illness

57.The underlined word “misinterpreted” in paragraph 4 probably means_________.

A. made guesses about

B. formed a wrong idea about

C. made wrong use of

D. took no notice of

58.Which of the following is TRUE?

A. Most customers understand what use-by dates mean.

B. “Use-by dates” have existed for more than 50 years.

C. Biscuits can’t be eaten when not as crunchy as they were bought.

D. Even after their use-by dates pass, some foods are still safe to eat.

59.Scientists are calling for a standard explanation to be printed together with the use-by dates because____.

A. use-by dates are not helpful or reliable

B. more consumers get worried about food safety

C. most consumers often misunderstand use-by dates

D. the quality level of different foods changes differently

高考英语阅读理解专项训练及答案及解析

高考英语阅读理解专项训练及答案及解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining global popularity. According to a government white paper, TCM has been introduced in 183 countries and regions around the world. Westerners' understanding of TCM, however, may be limited to acupuncture, cupping and massage(针灸,拔罐和按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on U. S. swimmer Michael Phelps, back from cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles and reducing pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016. As a matter of fact, Chinese herbs play a more important role in getting rid of diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. It is therefore disheartening to know that while 103 World Health Organization member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine. TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs. Herbs are made into pills, powder and soup, and the kind of herbs used, their quality and quantity, and the processing of the ingredients (原材料) jointly determine the effectiveness of the prescription. Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization, with the chemical composition and functions of its medicines being unclear and their effects being unstable. Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades, with an increasing number of factories producing patented TCM drugs. Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescriptions handed down from the past. Chinese chemist Tu Youyou's winning the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria (疟疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China's TCM industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time. (1)Why does the author mention the example of Michael Phelps? A. Because he was injured in his swimming. B. Because cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment. C. Because westerners know a little about TCM. D. Because westerners attach great importance to TCM. (2)Why don't some member countries of WHO recognize Chinese herbal medicine? A. Because Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases. B. Because they only approve the practice of acupuncture. C. Because Western medicine is more effective. D. Because medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly. (3)Compared with Western medicine, what is the weak point of TCM in Paragraph 4? A. The methods of planting herbs. B. The effectiveness of prescription. C. Lacking in standardization. D. Its stable functions.

When times get tough, we all look for ways to cut back. When we're hungry, we eat at home instead of going out. We take buses instead of taxis. And we wear our old designer jeans just a few months longer. With college expenses at all-time highs, high school students are eager to do anything to cut the cost of a university education. One cost-cutting proposal is to allow college students to get a bachelor's degree in three years instead of four. Educational institutions have been actively exploring ways to make the learning process more efficient. But there's a question: Would the quality of undergraduate education suffer? Few US universities have formally approved a "three-year degree" model. I doubt that mainstream North American colleges will carry out a three-year curriculum any time soon. For one thing, most universities already allow highly qualified students to graduate early by testing out of certain classes and obtaining a number of college credits. In addition, at famous universities, the committee who determine which courses are required and which courses are electives are unlikely to suddenly "throw out" one quarter of the required credits. Professors will resist "diluting (稀释)" the quality of the education they offer. In my opinion, a quality four-year education is always superior to a quality three-year education. A college education requires sufficient time for a student to become skilled in their major and do coursework in fields outside their major. It is not a good idea to water down education, any more than it's not a good idea to water down medicine. If we want to help students find their way through university, we should help them understand early on what knowledge and skills they need to have upon graduation. We should allow students to test out of as many courses as possible. We should give them a chance to earn money as interns (实习生) in meaningful part-time jobs that relate to their university studies, such as the five-year co-op program at Northeastern University. (1)Which of the following can best sum up the main idea? A.It's time to shorten the learning process. B.Best learning takes place over time. C.University education should be watered down. D.College education calls for reform. (2)We can learn from the passage that ________. A.most American universities are against the "three-year degree" model B.many famous US universities are considering adopting the "three-year degree" model C.professors are willing to accept the "three-year degree" model D.The "three-year degree" model can make college learning more efficient (3)In most US universities, ________. A.college students are offered the co-op program B.electives' credits make up one quarter of the required credits C.all students are required to finish four-year education before graduation D.some excellent students can graduate ahead of time
