Here are the tips from Sonja Lyubomirsky, author of The How of Happiness, to help you deal with a bad economy, and increase your happiness throughout the day.

1. Avoid Overthinking

In order to remove pessimism when things are difficult , it's best to think positively(积极地). “What can I learn from this? Times are hard, I’ve been out of work over a period of time, but I can spend more time with the kids, take up a new hobby, or learn a new set of skills.”

2. Practice Acts of Kindness

Now more than ever we need each other to stay alive. Lyubomirsky found that doing good things for friends, family, or strangers can make you happier. Think of practical, everyday offers that make someone’ s life a little bit easier.

3. Focus on Your Relationships

You don’t need an expert to tell you that relationships are important to happiness. Not being the bread-winner anymore or not being able to meet your kids’ needs can make your family life hard. But the solution is to stop feeling bad and focus on nurturing(培育)your loved ones.

“What parents don’t realize is that kids don’t care about toys but their attitudes towards them” says Lyubomirsky.

4. Pick a Goal

Devote yourself to a project—whether it is a business you want to start or a dance you want to learn. But it’s also important to remember to be flexible (灵活)in these times. Don’t feel down if conditions are stopping you from meeting your goals. Stick to it and change it if necessary!

5. Take Care of Your Body

Spend a small part of your day giving your body some TLC (tender loving care). It will go a long way in adding to your happiness. “Even if you can’t afford to go to the gym,” Lyubomirsky says, “take time out to exercise at home.”

The ships and life jackets(救生衣) were ready. Now I just had to wait for my little brother, Daniel. His lungs had only 40 percent of the breathing capacity(量)of an ordinary teenage boy. Every morning, evening and night, he did some breathing treatments. Daniel was fourteen—only four years younger than me—but I made it my business to look out for him. Friends who were coughing had to stay away until they were well. If not, it would mean a trip to the hospital if Daniel caught a cold. Many people said I was overprotective, but I knew it was my responsibility to keep him healthy. I was like Daniel’s guardian angel(守护神), though he probably didn’t know it.

I climbed into my seat and waited. When he was breathing better, we made our way past the cliffs(峭壁)that lined the shore.Cliffs rose on either side of us, the water breaking against them. The ocean was mad, but it was no trouble for us with rowing(划桨)experience. We felt surprised at the beauty of the scene—clear blue sky and calm breeze.

“Whoa,” Daniel said, looking up. In minutes the blue sky became windy and dark. Waves hit the shore and our ships went up and down in the wave. I looked back at Daniel to make sure he was okay and he was.

I got a bit too close to a rock on my left side. But before I could move away, a strong wave swept up my ship and pushed me toward the very rock I was trying to avoid. I tried to slow down and keep my balance. But I was headed right for the rock! Suddenly, my ship was ripped(裂开)by the rock from under me. I fell into the water. Everything was white. After my head broke the surface, I looked around but my ship was nowhere to be seen. The waves were too strong. I could hardly move. The water pulled me and pushed me at its will.

I could see my brother 30 yards away. He was just away from the dangerous white water and rocks, still upright, in his ship. If he came closer, he would fall into the water, too. He wouldn't have the strength to fight. But Daniel was already on his way, rowing as fast as he could. I caught hold of the back of his ship. Breathing hard, Daniel pulled me toward the ship. He struggled and could hardly breathe but kept rowing.

Finally my feet touched the shore. It took Daniel a while to get his breath back. We shared a quick hug and we both lay on the shore.

Looking at Daniel, I thought of something.

A. were both good at rowing

B. both did well in swimming

C. were disappointed at the view

B. Because a strong wind made his ship turn over in water.

D. Because his ship hit a rock as a result of a strong wave.

53. We can learn from the last paragraph that ________________.

A. the author also had a guardian angel, his brother

Everyone knows that walking is beneficial to the aging body, but did you know it keeps the mind sharper as well? Research shows that walking can actually increase the connectivity(联系)within brain, which tends to decrease as the grey hairs increase.

“Patterns of connectivity decrease as we get older,” said Dr. Arthur F. Kramer, w ho led the study team at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“Networks aren’t as well connected to support the things we do, such as driving,” he said. “But we found as a function(功能)of aerobic(有氧的)fitness, the networks became more reasonably connected.”

Kramer’s walking study, which was published in the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, studied 70 adults from 60 to 80 years old in a year. “Persons in the walking group, the aerobics training group, got the largest benefits,” he said, and not just physically.

“We also measured brain function,” said Kr amer, whose team used FMRI to examine brain networks. A group of 20-to-30-year olds were tested for comparison. “The aerobic group also improved in memory, attention and a variety of other cognitive(认知的) processes,” Kramer said. “As the older people in the walking group became more fit, the connectivity among different areas in the networks increased and became similar to those of the 20-year olds,” Kramer explained.

But the results did not happen overnight. Effects in the walking group were observed only after they trained for 12 months. Six-month tests got no clear changes.

The findings come as no surprise to Dr. Lynn Millar, an expert with the American College of Sports Medicine. She said while walking might seem like a simple activity, the brain is actually working to gather information from many different sources.

“When we walk we collect visual information, auditory information, as well as information from joints and muscles about wh ere the foot is, how much force, and things like that”, said Millar,

a professor of Physical Therapy at Andrews University, in Berrien Springs, Michigan.

58. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

A. Walking is necessary to the old

B. The strengths and weaknesses of walking

C. Walking helps keep body and brain young

D. The latest experiment about walking

59. What do you think “networks” refers to in Para.3?

A. the Internet

B. the relationship among people

C. the key to health

D. the functions of the body

60. What can be concluded from the passage?

A. The functions of our bodies are only related to exercise but not age.

B. If the old walk often, their connectivity can be better than the young.

C. It takes quite a long time to find out the effects in the walking group.

D. Walking is the best way to stay mentally and physically healthy.

The aging process (衰老过程)in humans is one which includes all the changes taking place socially, psychologically and physically. Normally, the process of aging in the human body starts at middle age around 45. The process and its effects depend on a lot, so some aspects of the aging process are different from person to person.

Women with a normal aging process often experience some major physical as well as psychological changes. Most women tend to become a little fatter and also get some wrinkles and fine lines as signs of aging. Their skin tends to lose all the natural moisture(水分), becomes dry and starts loosening out. There is also a great decrease in bone mass, body mass and muscle strength, which makes them more likely to suffer from a number of illnesses. The process of aging in women also causes them to lose height because of loss of bone tissue(组织). Hormonal(荷尔蒙的)changes in aging women can bring about a lot of psychological and behavioral changes in them.

Men too, experience a number of changes because of the process of aging, hormonal changes being the most important of all changes. Some changes that may be noticed in aging males include increased forgetfulness, sleeplessness and anger. However, the aging process in men is far simpler than that in women and most men tend to age without facing any major physical aging problems. Aging men tend to face mental problems like dementia and a decrease in the levels of muscle and body mass and bone strength.

The human aging process has a number of effects on the different bodily systems and their functions. As far as the cardiovascular system is concerned, aging results in limited flow of blood in the lungs and also reduces the strength of the heartbeat. The digestive system will find it increasingly difficult to digest and break down food, especially if the food is not chewed properly, which is very common because of poor teeth. The ability or the immune system to produce disease-fighting antibodies(抗体)is greatly reduced, which is what makes people over 45 become ill more easily.

Knowing and understanding more about the aging process in humans will enable you to identify many changes that take place when you age. It will also help you lead a happy, healthy and long life.
