Ⅱ. Reading Comprehension

Passage 1

Economic liberalism was the prevailing economic philosophy in much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the U.S. economy developed within its framework. Economic liberalism promoted freedom of action for the individual and the firm through the doctrines of free trade, self-interest, private property, laissez-faire, and competition.

According to his philosophy, individuals were free to seek their own occupations, to enter any business, and to act as they saw fit to improve their economic welfare. Economic society was held together by self-interest. Self-interest was thus the motivation

force of the economy. For example, to increase personal economic welfare, an individual might decide to produce goods and sell them for profit. But in so doing, that individual automatically benefited the community as well—by purchasing raw materials, providing employment, and supplying goods or services. A worker seeking to increase hi or her wages could do so by increasing productivity. This, too, benefited the employer and the community in general. According to Adam Smith, the individual, in seeking personal gain, was led them for profit. But in so doing, that individual automatically benefited the community as well—by purchasing raw materials, providing employment, and supplying goods or services. A worker seeking to increase hi or her wages could do so by increasing productivity. This, too, benefited the employer and the community in general. According to Adam Smith, the individual, in seeking personal gain, was led by an invisible hand to promote the welfare of the whole community.

Competition was the regulator of the economy under economic liberalism. Business competed with one another for consumer trade by developing new and better products and by selling existing products at lower prices. Free entry into the market ensured adequate competition, and prices were determined by the free forces of supply and demand. Competitive force determined not only the prices of goods and services but also wage rates.

Since a beneficial self-interest was the motivating and driving force of the economy and since competition was to serve as the regulator of the economy, a policy of laissez-faire prevailed. According to this policy, the government kept its hands off the economic activities of individuals and businesses. Its economic role was strictly to protect private property, to enforce contracts, and to act as a judge in economic disputes.

21. Concerning “economic liberalism”, which of the following is true?

B The development of the U.S. as a nation owes much to this philosophy.

C It is about the freedom of action in the field of economics.

A satisfy the needs of other people.

A Individuals are keen on their own interest.

B In their subconsciousness, people wish to serve the community.

C In pursuing their self-interest, individuals bring benefits to society.

24. Competitive forces have the following functions except ______.

A forcing the businesses to develop new and better products

D to help regulate the wages of people employed

Passage 2

Changes in the natural rate of unemployment can easily be mistaken for cyclical employment. For this reason it is important to understand the force s influencing the natural rate of unemployment in an economy.

Younger workers are more likely to quit their jobs than older workers. It simply takes some time for them to match skills with their employment. So it is reasonable to assume that the younger the average age in the labor force, the higher the natural rate of unemployment.

Increased fluctuation in the pattern of demand for domestic goods increases structural unemployment and, in turn, contributes to a higher natural rte of unemployment. An increase in energy prices that occurred in the mid-1970s in U.S. affected hiring in many industries. Increase foreign competition also hurt the U.S. automobile and steel industries at that time.

Rapid changes in technology designed to cut costs can also result in greater job separation. In an effort to compete more effectively with foreign firms, many U.S. Firms have shifted to new technology that requires fewer workers per plant and results in slower hiring of new workers.

In recent years the number of married women in the labor force has increase sharply, therefore increasing the umber of two-earner families. The existence of a second income prevents income from falling to zero when one of the spouses(配偶)quits a job to search for a better one. Also, the second income allows a longer period to find a new job than would otherwise be possible.

Tendencies to move in and out of the labor force can also affect the natural rate of unemployment. Workers who frequently move in and out of the work force have a higher rate of job separation because they are less experienced than other workers. As

a result they are more likely to quit or be fired from a job.

26. The natural rate of unemployment is higher among younger workers because ______.

A they have to spend some time learning the necessary skills

B they often quit their jobs for a change

C they do not treat their jobs seriously

D they are too young to do their jobs well

27. What happened to the American economy when the prices of energy went up in the U.S. in the mid-1970s?

A Employment in some related industries was increased.

B Employment in some other industries was increased.

C Employ7ment in some related industries was reduces.

D The U.S. automobile and steel industries were hurt.

28. Why do advances in technology increase unemployment according to the fourth paragraph?

A Because many workers are forceful to leave their jobs for further training.

B Because some workers will quit their jobs for easier ones.

C Because new workers will not be hired within a long period of time.

D Because only a smaller number of workers will be needed.

29. Which of the following is NOT the result of the existence of two-earner families according to the passage?

A One of the spouses quits a job more often.

D One of the spouses takes his or her time in seeking a new job.

Passage 3

“There is no arguing about taste” ─runs the Latin proverb. But taste did not just happen.

Cultural, historical, biological and environmental events have interacted to cause frogs, for example, tobe viewed as delicious in southern China but to be regarded with revulsion in northern China. Eventhough much remains unknown, tastes cannot be dismissed as inarguable or illogical; an attempt will bemade here to discover why, as Lucretius put it, “What is food to one man may be fierce poison toothers?”

Among the approximately thirty million tribal people of India, a total of 250 animal species areavoided by one group or another. Most of these people will not eat meat from a tiger or any of varioussnakes. Although they say they feel a relationship with these animals, it is obvious that both are highlydangerous and that hunting them systematically would be foolish.

Monkeys are avoided, probably because they look like human beings in appearance; in these tribes,man-eating is viewed as extremely cruel. A reluctance to eat some female animals has been attributed torespect for the mother’s role, but it could also be due to a policy of allowing the females to reproduce andprovide more young for people. Many tribes avoid eating any animal that has died of unknown causes, anintelligent attitude in view of the possibility that the animal might have died from a disease that couldspread to humans. Animals that consume garbage are similarly avoided, an adaptive step that preventscontact with parasites (寄生虫), and that might explain why members of one tribe eat any of twenty-onedifferent species of rats, but not

the house rat.

Passage 1

One of the most popular literary figures in American literature is a woman who spent almost half of her life in China, a country on a continent thousands of miles from the United States. In her life time she earned her country’s most highly acclaimed literary award, the Pulitzer Prize, and also the most prestigious form of literary recognition in the world, the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Pearl S. Buck was almost a household word throughout much of her lifetime because of her prolific output, which consisted of some eighty-five published works, including several dozen novels, six collections of short stories, fourteen books for children, and more than a dozen works of nonfiction. When she was eighty years old, some twenty-five volumes were awaiting publication. Many of those books were set in China, the land in which she spent so much of her life.

Her books and her life served as a bridge between the cultures of the East and the West. As the product of those two cultures she became, as she described herself, “mentally bifocal”. Her unique background made her into an unusually interesting and versatile human being. As we examine the life of Pearl Buck, we cannot help but be aware that we are in fact meeting three separate people: a wife and mother, an internationally famous writer, and a humanitarian and philanthropist. One cannot really get to know Pearl Buck without learning about each of the three. Though honored in her lifetime with the William Dean Howell Medal of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in addition to the Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes, Pearl Buck as a total human being, not only a famous author, is a captivating subject of study.

Passage 4

Before the widespread use of computers, managers could not make full use of large amounts of valuable information about a company’s activities. The information either reached managers too late or was too expensive to be used. Today, managers are facing a wide range of data processing and information instruments. In place of a few financial controls, managers can draw on computer-based information systems to control activities in every area of their company. On any kinds of performance measures, the information provided by these systems helps managers compare standards with actual results, find out problems, and take corrective action before it is too late to make changes.

The introduction of computerized information systems has sharply changed management control in many companies. Even a neighborhood shopkeeper may now use computers to control sales, billing, and other activities. In large companies, electronic data processing systems monitor(监视)entire projects and sets of operations.

Now, there are about 24 million microcomputers in use in the United States — one for every 10 citizens. In order for managers to be sure that the computer-based information they are receiving is accurate, they need to understand how computers work. However, in most cases they do not need to learn how to program computers. Rather, managers should understand how computerized information systems work; how they are developed; their limitations and costs; and the manner in which information systems may be used. Such an understanding is not difficult to achieve.

One research found that business firms were more successful in teaching basic information about computers to business graduates than they were in teaching basic business subjects to computer science graduates.

46. Why could not managers make full use of the information collected?

A. Because they found the old-type computers were too ineffective.

B. Because the information reached them just in time.

C. Because they failed to realize that information was valuable for a company.

D. Because it took time and money for them to get the up-to-date information.

47. According to the passage, computer-based information helps managers __________.

C. compare standards with expected results

D. make business routines

48. In Paragraph 2, the sentence “Even neighborhood shopkeeper may now use…” is __________.

Passage 1

Minh Pham was born in Vietnam. He left when he was 21 years old. Minh has been in America for almost two years. There is still much he does not understand about America.

Once, Minh was in a supermarket. He saw an old man and an old woman. They wanted a box of cereal. The box was on a high shelf. The man and woman couldn’t reach it. Minh saw a stepladder. He got on the ladder and got the box. He handed it to the elderly couple. They thanked him.

“Where are your children? ”asked Minh. “Why don’t they help you buy food? ”

“Our children have their own lives,”said the man and woman. “We like to be independent. ”Minh doesn’t think this is right. In his country, children help their parents. Minh gave the elderly couple his phone number. He told them to call him if they needed help. One night they asked Minh to dinner, but they never asked him help.

One day, Minh was walking with a Vietnamese friend. The two men were going to a movie. Minh wanted to go to a restaurant first. Minh took his friend’s hand. He pulled him toward the restaurant. People on the street stared at Minh. In Vietnam, friends often hold hands. Minh found out that people in America are not used to men holding hands.

Minh Pham is going through a process known as resocialization. Socialization is the process in which a person learns to live in a society. Everyone goes through this process. Passage 2

Life really should be one long journey of joy for children born with a world of wealth at their feet.

Internationally famous child doctor Robert Coles is the world’s top expert on the influence of money on children. He has written a well-known book on the subject, “The Privileged Ones,” and his research shows that too much money in the family can cause as many problems as too little. “Obviously there are certain advantages to being rich,” says the 53-year-old doctor, “such as better health, education and future work prospects. But most important is the quality of family life. Money can’t buy love.”

It can buy a lot of other things, however; and that’s where the trouble starts. Rich kids have so much to choose from that they often become confused. Over-indulgence by their parents can make them spoilt. They tend to travel more than other children, from home to home and country to country, which causes feelings of restlessness.

“But privileged children do have a better sense of their positions in the world,”adds Mr. Coles, “and they are more self-assured.” The rich children inherit the property from their parents and enjoy a high income. So money will never be one of their problems. “However, they will have a sense of isolation,” warns Dr. Coles, “and they could suffer from the hardship of not being able to deal with the everyday world because they will never really be given the chance. Everything they have achieved is because of an accident of birth. There can be no tremendous inner satisfaction about that.”

Today’s wealthy parents perhaps realize their riches can be more of a heavy load than a happiness to their children. So the first thing for them to consider is to ensure that their families are as rich in love as they are in money.

36. According to the passage, children of rich families __________.

Passage 3

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.

It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.

Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring,. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part,. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.

41.The writer is in favor of the view that man’s intelligence is given to him _____.

A. at birth

B. through education

C. both at birth and through education

D. neither at birth nor through education

42. If a child is born with low intelligence, he may______.

A. become a genius

B. still become a genius if he should be give special education

C. reach his intelligence limits in rich surroundings

D. not reach his intelligence in his life

43. In the second paragraph “if we take two unrelated people at random from the population” means if we _____.

A. pick any two persons

B. take out two different persons

C. choose two persons who are relative

D. choose two persons with different intelligence

44. The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows _____.

A. the importance of their intelligence

B. the role of environment on intelligence

C. the importance of their positions

D. the part that birth plays

45. The best title of this passage can be _____.

A. Surroundings

B. Intelligence

C. Dependence on Environment

D. Effect of Education

Most parents, I suppose, have had the experience of reading a bedtime story to their children. And they must have 46how difficult it is to write a 47 children's book. Either the author has aimed too 48 , so that the children can't follow what is in his (or more often, her) story, 49 the story seems to be talking to the readers.

The best children's books are 50very difficult nor very simple, and satisfy both the 51 who hears the story and the adult who 52 it. Unfortunately, there are in fact 53 books like this, 54 the problem of finding the right bedtime story is not 55 to solve.

This may be why many of books regarded as 56of children's literature were in fact written for 57. “Alice's Adventure in Wonderland”is perhaps the most58 of this.

Children, left for themselves, often 59 the worst possible interest in literature. Just leave a child in bookshop or 60and he will 61 willingly choose the books written in an imaginative way, or have a look at most children's comics, full of the stories and jokes which are the 62of teachers and right-thinking parents.

Perhaps we parents should stop trying to brainwash childrento 63 our taste in literature. After all children and adults are so 64that we parents should not expect that they will enjoy the 65books. So I suppose we'll just have to compromise over that bedtime story.
