Jonathan Rivers lived alone in an orderly house in London. Like many other single, middle-aged men, he was getting rather set in his ways. Before he left the house in the morning, he would carefully close all the doors downstairs, open some windows upstairs to let the air in, and lock the front door.

One summer evening, Jonathan returned home as usual. When he opened the front gate, he immediately noticed something strange. There was a heavy footprint in the earth in one of the flowers beds. Then he noticed that one of the white curtains in the front room downstairs was out of place. Jonathan never left anything out of place.

He walked up to the front door and opened it quietly. He listened carefully for a few moments but could hear nothing. Inside, the front-room door was half open. Jonathan studied it thoughtfully, wondering if he had forgotten to close it that morning. He stepped silently across the hall to the door and looked inside the room. The shadow of a man was clearly reflected on the far wall in the evening sunlight. The man had clearly been standing behind the door since Jonathan's return. Jonathan immediately locked the door. Then he calmly picked up the telephone in the hall and set about calling the police.

The burglar (盗贼), a tall fellow, tried to climb through a window to get out but Jonathan had expected that. He attacked him with his umbrella, using it like a sword (剑). Three minutes later the police arrived. Jonathan was a little annoyed (苦恼的) that he had to have dinner later than usual, but on the whole he felt quite pleased with himself.

Part 6 Reading Comprehension (Short Answer)

Directions: Read the following passage(s) carefully and give brief answers to the questions. Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

Letter writing is becoming less and less common as millions of young people connect daily with their friends through the Internet. The Internet is quickly becoming the place, similar to

department stores, where people of the younger generation go to talk with each other.

Some young people use the phone less and stay online more to keep in touch with others. Professors are of the opinion that the online connection is a positive development for an age group that desires to keep social relations.

Today, 80 percent of American young people use the Net, according to Global TGI, a market research firm. By 2010, that number will climb to 95 percent.

Although most young people say they still prefer talking by telephone because they can express feelings, many say they spend more time online. There are different reasons for that. First, online communication is relatively fast, cheap, and easy--especially compared to long-distance phone calls. Then there is the awareness that the Internet is a recent development, and, therefore, cool.

"Y oung people always have to be up on what's new," says Henkart, a high school junior from California. "Since email is cool, young people want to find out what the excitement is about."

36. Why do many young people still prefer the phone to the Internet?

37. What percentage of American young people will use the Internet by 2010?

38. According to professors, talking online is a positive means of _________________.

39. What are the major benefits of online communication?

40. What is the meaning of "young people always have to be up on what's new"?

The two of them were busy with pencils and paper, checking their list of luggage (行李) when there was a ring at the door. Mrs. Jones went to open it, and saw a well-dressed middle-aged lady outside. The lady said that she lived in a flat beside theirs, and that she had come to welcome them to their new home.

Mrs. Jones invited her in. "I hope you'll excuse us for all this mess (杂乱)," said Mrs. Jones, "We are trying..." "Oh, that's quite all right," said the lady. But in this building, everyone is a friend with everybody else. We are one big, happy family. I'm sure you'll be happy here."

The lady was greatly surprised when she visited the same flat the next time, because she found that a different man and a woman had moved in. On the lady's first visit, Mr. and Mrs. Jones had not the heart to tell her they were not the new owners of the flat, but the old owners, who had lived beside her for two years. 新视野试卷三级试卷及答案

Text 1 Some pessimistic experts feel that the automobile is bound to fall into disuse. They see a day in the not-too-distant future whenall autos will be abandoned. Other authorities, however, think the auto is here to stay. They hold that the car will remain a leading means of urban travel in the foreseeable future. The motorcar will undoubtedly change significantly over the next 30 years. It should become smaller, safer, and more economical, and should not be powered by the gasoline engine. The car of the future should be far more pollution-free than present types. Regardless of its power source, the auto in the future will still be the main problem in urban traffic congestion (拥挤). One proposed solution to this problem is the automated highway system. Whenthe auto enters the highway system, retractable (可伸缩的)arm will drop from the auto and make contact with a rail, which is similar to those powering subway trains electrically. Once attached to the rail, the car will become electrically powered from the system, and control of the vehicle will pass to a central computer. The computer will then monitor all of the car's movements. The driver will use a telephone to dial instructions about his destination into the system. The computer will calculate the best route, and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway. The driver will then be free to relax and wait for the buzzer (蜂鸣器)that will warn him of his

新视野大学英语3期中考试B卷

Part II. Reading Comprehension (20 points) Passage One As we consider what makes one man better than the other, let’s look at two examples. The first example is a man who has a good job, a healthy body, and a loving family. His success is due to good decisions. He chose the correct subjects to study when he was at the university. Now that he’s out of school, he always schedules his time well so that he can get everything done at the proper time. He exercises and eats well, as he understands the benefits of this. In addition, in order to achieve happiness in the home, he spends time with his family and makes sure they all have when they need. On the other hand, the second man is something less than the successful person the first man is. What’s wrong with him? Good sense is the ability to know what is true or right from what is not true or wrong. And some people might think that the second lacks good sense. However, the person who thinks this is mistaken. Actually, since everyone has the same amount of good sense, the first man does not have an advantage over the second in this respect. The second man has a good mind, and he has the ability to judge things well. The second man runs into trouble, because he directs his thought along a different path. He considers other things, different from the first man. The problem is that he does not apply his mind rightly, as does the first one. Thus, he is not capable of advancing further than he does. When you consider what you want out of life, think about the results of your decisions. Apply your mind well so that good things will come about and so that you are not left regretting your actions. 21. During his university years, the first man ________. A. scheduled his time to get everything done. B. learned how to apply his mind rightly. C. ate right and did exercise regularly. D. chose things that made him successful later. 22. The first man is fully aware of the good things that will result from _______. A. making good decisions during one’s unive rsity studies. B. scheduling his time so that he can get everything done. C. taking care of his body with diet and exercise. D. being a successful person with a good family life. 23. One’s ability to judge right or wrong is called _______. A. beneficial consideration B. thought direction C. successful thinking D. good sense 24. To keep from wishing you made a different choice, you should ________. A. get more out of life B. develop more good sense
