SCOPE:
This protocol module applies to devices that are powered, whether entirely or in part, by primary batteries (single-use batteries) at less than 60 V d.c. LABELING
Battery product instructions ANSI C18.1M part 2-03
section 9 modified
1
Products with replaceable batteries shall instruct user to replace
batteries ensuring proper polarity, with the correct battery type,
and as a simultaneous set.
Modification = section 9 is modified to apply to battery
compartments.
Battery Product Compartment Design Guidance ANSI C18.1M part 2-03
annex A / CPSD-HL-
01057-MTHD
1
Products with replaceable batteries shall be provided with
marking, to indicate type of battery to use, polarity alignment
and how to insert correctly.
Compartments shall be designed so batteries are:
- secured in place and not fall out too easily
- positioned to minimize risk of user harm (falling, heat, leaks),
especially for devices worn on body.
- not making electrical contact if inserted backwards - where
practicable.
- not a pressure hazard in case of cell venting
- free from metal that contacts or abrades the case / jacket and
may lead to short circuits.
Battery Product Packaging CPSD-EL-01000-MTHD All Packaging/labeling of products using replaceable batteries (products using button cell batteries are exempt) shall indicate (“claim”) the designation (type) and number of batteries required and whether they are included or not. Report claim.
Included Batteries CPSD-EL-01000-MTHD 1 Report number, type and manufacturer (or ID numbers) of any batteries included with the product.
- Number & type shall meet any claim.
- Batteries shall all be of uniform make & type.

1
Perform a simulated life test by measuring the battery current
draw while operating normally. Report current draw. Calculate
and report projected battery life, with recommended battery type.
Shall meet manufacturer's projected battery life claims, if any. If
battery is included, measure battery capacity per ANSI C18.1M,
and calculate expected life for battery of the measured capacity.
Report.

Reversing battery orientation shall not damage unit.
Included Primary Batteries Check CPSD-EL-01060-MTHD 1 For included primary batteries, report open circuit voltage of each cell (Or total battery stack). Voltage shall be no less than normal rated open circuit value. (1.5 V/ cell for alkaline or HD)
Battery Compartment - Closure CPSD-EL-01000-MTHD 1 Report type of battery compartment closure (threaded, cross-head screw, coin opening, manual slide, manual door, etc.). Report whether door closure becomes separate, or remains attached to device. Small screws used in door closure shall remain with an open door. Door shall reclose as intended.
