The cleanup of TikTok and WeChat is unclean

US President Trump signed executive orders on August 6 stating that the social apps TikTok and WeChat pose a threat to US national security. And the orders prohibit transactions with TikTok and WeChat if their parents ByteDance and Tencent do not reach a deal to divest it in 45 days.

Trump’s government used tough measures to clean up Chinese social apps in the United States to maintain national security. Unfortunately, this cleanup is unclean. Unilateral rulings and opaque operations made the US government dominate the right to speak, making TikTok unable to fight back. Because Chinese social apps have been deemed by the U.S. government to steal user information, the rebuttal is to escape responsibility. Although the United States is recognized as a free country and a market economy, Chinese companies that have been treated unfairly have no way to protect their rights. "Prohibited transactions may include, for example, agreements to make the TikTok app available on app stores ... purchasing advertising on TikTok, and accepting terms of service to download the TikTok app onto a user device," the document states.

This is the information that every social APP service user needs. At the same time, social apps in the United States, Twitter, and Google also collect personal information from users, infringing on users’ privacy, and failing to be safe and clean. In the most recent case, Facebook was accused of illegally harvesting the biometric data of more than 100 million Instagram users in new legal proceedings in California. The lawsuit alleges that the photo-sharing app collected, stored, and profited from the data of users without their knowledge or consent. However, the United States kept silent and only aimed at China with high standards. This differential treatment is a form of discrimination.

In addition to treating differently, Facebook copy TikTok's creativity to develop new service projects. Recently, Facebook introduced Reels, an Instagram feature very similar to Tiktok, allowing users to post 15-second videos. The purpose is to replace Tiktok and attract young users in the world. The US government tried to expel powerful competitors from China through the charges of "national security" and "information leakage". To eliminate competitors in the name of cleaning up threats, such behavior violates WTO trade rules and will also affect the development of globalization. That's why it is said that the removal of Chinese social media by the United States is not clean.

Encouraging competition does not mean destroying competitors. Trump’s government is trying to maintain the leading position of the United States in the world by suppressing China and blocking trade links. The current choice of America is to cut off the bridges but build walls to keep the United States in the comfort zone. This is not a wise response to the crisis.

Since Trump signed the executive orders on August 6, Apple's stock price has plummeted by more than 2.27% on August 7, and its market value has evaporated by $44.8 billion. Also, the Wall Street Journal exclusively reported on August 13 that more than a dozen large American multinational companies, including Apple, Ford Motor, Wal-Mart, Procter & Gamble, Walt Disney, Intel, Goldman Sachs, and Merck, held conference calls with White House officials. Trump's response to this concern was "whatever" and once again emphasized that this move was to protect national security. We can see that Trump’s government are talking about “national security” over and over again but didn’t provide any specific evidence to show how these Chinese company and apps threaten the safety of America.

In the United States, where the epidemic is serious and the economy is in recession, what should be most concerned about is the lives and income of ordinary people. This is the most basic condition for national security and stability. Trump is good at crisis transfer and blurred focus, which may help the presidential election in a short period and ease conflicts. However, in the long run, there is no way to completely solve the domestic economic downturn, and it will continue to affect the development of US commerce and trade.

If the United States continues to implement the proposition of clearing out Chinese apps from the US market, then the US electronics and technology industry is bound to be seriously affected. There are a large number of Apple users in China. If WeChat is removed from the apple store, most people choose to abandon Apple and turn to Huawei, Xiaomi, or other Chinese electronic brands. According to the survey, among 1.2 million people, 95% of Chinese users choose to continue using WeChat. Because WeChat, as the most important social app in China, has fully integrated into people's lives, studies, and work.

When the gun fired, there was no winner. Also in the long-term competition between China and the United States, there is no winner. China rejects the arrogance and prejudice from the United States and hopes friendly communication. It's time for the US to come back to the negotiating table, to resolve disputes in a truly clean way.
