B1 Do you know who Benjamin Banneker was and what he did?Benjamin Banneker was a self-educated scientist at a time when most African Americans were slaves.

Born a free black man in the British Colony of Maryland in 1731, he received some formal education, but he mostly borrowed books and taught himself science and mathematics. At 22, he borrowed a pocket watch, and without any training, figured out how to carve a working wooden clock that chimed each hour. Because of this clock, he became well known and people would visit him just to see his creation.

Banneker ran his family farm for many years, but when he was in his late 50s, a neighbor's son lent him a telescope. He became interested in astronomy, the study of the planets and stars, and again taught himself a new science. He made calculations of tides, sunrises and sunsets, and even predicted an eclipse. For several years he published an almanac of these calculations. Today, he is best known for publishing six almanacs, called "Benjamin Banneker's Almanac" between 1792 and 1797.

In the 1790s, Banneker also helped survey and lay out the land for Washington, D.C., which became the nation's capital. For a look at Banneker's amazing life, visit the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park & Museum in Ellicott, City, Maryland.

B3 On average, American kids aged 3 to 12 spend 29 hours a week in school, eight hours more than they did in 1981. They also did more household work and participated in more of such organized activities as soccer and ballet. Involvement in sports, in particular, rose almost 50%from 1981 to 1997: boys now spend an average of four hours a week playing sports; girls log half that time. All in all, however, children's leisure time dropped from 40%of the day in 1981 to 25%.

"Children are affected by the same crunch ( 危机) that affects their parents," says Sandra Hofferth, who headed the recent study of children's timetable. A chief reason, she says, is that more mothers are working outside the home. (Nevertheless, children in both double-income and "male breadwinner" households spent comparable amounts of time interacting with parents, 19 hours and 22 hours respectively. In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers.) All work no play could make for some very messed-up kids. "Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself," says T. Berry Brazelton, professor at Harvard Medical School. Unstructured play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to negotiate their relationships with peers, but kids aged 3 to 12 spent only 12 hours a week engaged in it.

The children sampled spent a quarter of their rapidly decreasing "free time" watching television. But that, believe it or not, was one of the findings parents might regard as good news. If they're spending less time in front of the TV set, however, kids aren't replacing it with reading. Despite efforts to get kids more interested in books, the children spend just over an hour a week reading. Let's face it, who's got the time?

B3-3 According to the author, the reason given by Sandra Hofferth for the time crunch is _____.

A. partially true

B. quite convincing

C. rather confusing

D. totally groundless 解析:细节推断题。从第二段最后括号里的确切数据得知“…In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers.”母亲去外工作的家庭中的孩子和母亲在一起的时间比单亲母亲的家庭中孩子和母亲呆在一起的时间要长,所以正确答案为D“完全没有根据的”。

A. he has plenty of time reading and playing

B. he is free to interact with working parents

解析:细节理解题。从第三段第一句“Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself.”和最后一句“…allows the young to negotiate their relationships with peers.”可以看出正确答案为C“作者认为孩子如果被允许以任意的方式和同龄人去玩耍,更有利于他的发展。”

B1

B3-3 The author is concerned about the fact that American kids _____.

A. are involved less and less in household work

B. are spending more and more time watching TV

C. are engaged in more and more structured activities

D. are increasingly neglected by their working mothers 解析:细节推断题。从第三段最后一句“Unstructured play encourages independent thinking ……but kids aged 3 to 12 spent only 12 hours a week engaged in it.”可以推断出美国孩子可能越来越多的去做那些已经有固定模式的活动,所以正确答案为C。

B3-5 By mentioning "the same time crunch"(Line 1, Para.2 ) Sandra Hofferth means _____.

A. children have little time to play with their parents

B. both parents and children suffer from lack of leisure time

C. both parents and children have trouble managing their time

D. children are not taken good care of by their working parents 解析:细节理解题。根据第一段最后一句“children's leisure time dropped from 40% of the day in 1981 to 25%.”和第二段的“Children are affected by the same crunch ( 危机) that affects their parents.”得知“家长和孩子都因缺少空闲时间所困扰”,正确答案为B。

B5 Most Americans believe that good education is quite necessary to democracy and social progress. Even during their colonial time the settlers attached great importance to setting up schools for their children, because these puritans were firm believers in education. They tried hard to establish enough schools for their children. The schools were not only to teach children how to read, write and calculate but also to train clergymen. The first college, Harvard, was set up in Massachusetts in 1636. Soon after, the colonial government passed a law requiring every town of more than 40 families to have a school and school master. By the mid-eighteenth century several well-known colleges were founded, including Columbia in New York and Princeton in New Jersey. They were used to train young people.

Education did not develop very fast in the South where big plantation owners did not want to build schools for the children of the poor workers and slaves. Children from rich families usually went to England for higher education. This was one the reasons why the South developed more slowly than the North.

Colonial schools laid the foundation for America educational system in which all the American schools were left to the care of communities or local authority. Compulsory education has been carried out and primary and secondary education has been open to American children free of charge for many years.

B7 The purpose of this part of the book is to help you become more efficient in reading by speeding up the process generally. Most people can learn to cover material much faster than they do now while maintaining a high level of comprehension.

Improvement in reading efficiency has several major benefits. We need reading skills to benefit from the wealth of information that is now available in printed form. Most people get the rough outlines of their daily news from television and radio. However, the printed word still provides the in-depth coverage of topics that really produces well-informed people. Reading is also a great source of entertainment for many people. For students, it is the primary method of studying.

The time you now spend reading can be made much more productive by increasing your reading rate. For some people this will mean that they can obtain more information in the same length of time. B8 A recent survey h as shown that the number of people in the United Kingdom who do not intend to get internet access has risen. These people, who are know as 'net refuseniks', make up 44%of UK households, or 11.2 million people in total.

The research also showed that more than 70 percent of these people said that they were not interested in getting connected to the internet. This number has risen from just over 50%in 2005, with most giving lack of computer skills as a reason for not getting internet access, though some also said it was because of the cost.

More and more people are getting broadband and high speed net is available almost everywhere in the UK, but there are still a significant number of people who refuse to take the first step.

The cost of getting online is going down and internet speeds are increasing, so many see the main challenge to be explaining the relevance of the internet to this group. This would encourage them to get connected before they are left too far behind. The gap between those who have access to and use the internet is the digital divide, and if the gap continues to widen, those without access will get left behind and miss out on many opportunities, especially in their careers.

B9 The often criticized child of the industrial age, advertising, has grown as societies have become more industrialized and, therefore, more commercialized. No modern industry or company can survive without advertising; it is the vital link between the producer and the customer. If advertising were abolished, as many people have suggested it should be, the public and the companies that advertise would suffer a considerable loss.

Most people think of television as an inexpensive source of entertainment. Television's primary purpose, however, is not to provide an entertainment service; except for government-owned networks, it exists in order to promote products for companies. Unless the television industry received income from advertising, watching television would be at least as expensive as going to the movies.

Like television, many magazines and newspapers exist primarily to sell products. In some cases, the stories, pictures, and editorials simply attract people to buy a particular publication. Once a person begins to read, there is no escaping the advertising.

Advertising not only pays for, or helps pay for, much of the mass media; it also provides the consumer with news from industry. This news functions first to influence the buyer to choose one product over another. It also informs people of new products that are important in their lives, for example, the development of salt-free butter for heart patients, or the development of tires that prevent skidding(侧滑) on wet pavement.

Advertising does not usually increase the total number of products sold; it does help determine which company sells more of which products. Its main function is to relay news from the manufacturer to the consumer. Since this is a necessary service, advertising will remain a part of people's everyday lives and a part of every company's budget.

B9-1 According to the passage, modern industry or company can't survive_____.

B1

B9-4 The main function of advertising is _____.

B. informing public of new products

C. influencing buyers

D. all of the above 解析:由文章“in order to promote products for companies, attract people to buy a particular publication, also provides the consumer with news from industry.”可以看出广告的功能是为了提高公司产品知名度,吸引消费者,提供消费者新产品,正确答案选D。

B9-5 Which of the following is NOT true to advertising?

B10 A nineteenth-century French dramatist remarked that the only difference between animals and human beings is that people drink when they are not thirsty and make love in any season. The sociologist's definition of the difference is more scientific: only human beings have the ability for creating and transmitting culture. More than any other species, human animals are able to surpass their biological limitations by sharing ideas and passing on what they learn to future generations.

All animals, including human beings, have certain problems in common. In order to survive as species, they must find a home, get food and provide for their young. Animals are guided by instincts that enable them to cope with these problems of existence. They respond to their environment is a fixed predictable manner: beavers build dams as homes, lions hunt for antelopes for food, and birds build nests to protect their young. Should these solutions turn out to be inadequate, animals for the most part will still go on making the same responses to the same problems. It is true that much of the behavior of higher animals is learned through direct experience. As everyone knows, dogs can be taught to overcome their instinctive dislike of cats, and parrots often learn new calls. In some cases animals have also been known to teach their offspring what they themselves have learned. Nevertheless, human beings are unique in their far greater ability to learn from experiences, to create new solutions to old problems, and most important, to use language to transmit what they have learned to future generations. While animal societies must rely on biologically inherited methods of dealing with their environment, human societies have the far greater advantage of a socially inherited culture.

B10-1 From a sociological point of view, the difference between humans and animals is _____.

A. humans drink when they are not thirsty

B. humans must find a home

C. humans can pass on their culture from generation to generation

D. humans know how to bring up their young 解析:由文章“people drink when they are not thirsty and make love in any season”可以看出人区别于动物是因为人是有意识的去做事,而动物只是凭本能,正确答案选C。

B10-2 One of the problems that both humans and animals must face is _____.

A. they have to overcome their biological disadvantages

B. they have to raise their young in whatever living conditions

C. they must share ideas when in trouble

D. they must find new solutions to difficult problems 解析:由句子“they must find a home, get food and provide for their young”可以看出无论是人类还是动物都会抚养他们的孩子,正确答案选B。

B10-3 In face of problems of existence, animals _____.

A. can think and find a plausible solution

B. only respond repeatedly in the fixed way

C. can pass on the information to their young

D. young animals can think of better ways to solve them 解析:由文章“Should these solutions turn out to be inadequate, animals for the most part will still go on making the same responses to the same problems”可以知道动物会对同样的问题做很多次回应,正确答案选B。

B10-4 Beavers can build dams as home _____.

A. because they can learn from each other

B. in an instinctive way

C. after many failures

D. after they follow other beavers 解析:由文章第二段“Animals are guided by instincts that enable them to cope with these problems of existence.”可以看出动物处于本能,“beavers build dams as homes, lions hunt for antelopes for food, and birds build nests to protect their young”,所以正确答案选B。

B11 I worked as a manager in a company for a number of years. I liked my job, and was doing well there, but our company was bought by a larger company and most of the managers at our place lost their jobs. That was when I d ecided to do something I'd always wanted to do ―become a freelance (自由撰稿的) writer. Changing professions (职业) has meant that my lifestyle has changed in a number of ways.

The main difference for me now is that I have a much more flexible (灵活的) schedule. I work about as much as I did before ―between 45 and 50 hours a week ―but my schedule is much less rigid than it used to be. Before, I worked from 8 to 5 every day, with a few extra hours on weekends. Now, however, I work when I feel like it. For instance, sometimes I work until midnight or 2 A.M., then sleep until noon. I really prefer this kind of schedule. It seems more natural to me.

I also decided that it was about time I began to pay more attention to my health. While I was working as a manager, I never exercised. I already felt tired after work, so I just came home in the evening and watched TV. However, last year I joined a health club and began to do regular exercise. As a result I have lost over 10 pounds and I feel much better. I've also started to eat more healthfully. I used to eat a lot of fast food, but now I do my own shopping. I buy lots of fruits and vegetables and cook them at home.

Of course, not all the changes have been that easy. For example, I don't feel as secure financially as I used to. When I was working as a manager, I never worried much about money. I could always count on getting my paycheck every two weeks. Working freelance, I don't have a regular paycheck. So now I have to make sure there's enough money until the next check arrives.

All in all, I really like my current lifestyle. Of course, that doesn't mean I'll never want to have a "regular" job. But for now, at least, it suits me.

B11-11 Why did the author decide to become a freelance writer?

A. He had always liked writing.

B. He was dissatisfied with his company.

C. He never liked his job as a manager.

D. He wanted to change his lifestyle.

B11-11 What is the main difference the job change brought to the author?

A. He works fewer hours a week.

B. He does not have to work on weekends.

C. He can change his schedule as he likes.

A. He wants to lose weight.

B. He has got lots of free time on his hands.

C. He no longer feels tired after work.

D. He wants to eat more healthfully. 、

B11-4 What is his chief problem now?

A. He cannot count on his paycheck to arrive on time.

B. He has no regular work to do.

C. He has to find a publisher for his books.

D. He has to worry about money.

解析:细节题。从第四段第二句话可以看出“I don't feel as secure financially as I used to.”(我没有像过去一样感觉到财政上的无虑),所以正确答案为D“他不得不为了钱的事情担心”。

B11-5 At the end of the passage, the author indicates that _____.

A. he is going to find a regular job soon

B. he is not going to change his lifestyle in the near future

C. he will continue to write for the rest of his life

D. he will soon find out whether writing is a good career for him

解析:细节题。从最后一段可以看出“…I really like my current lifestyle …But for now, at least, it suits me.”(我真的喜欢当前的生活方式……至少到现在,这种方式是适合我的),只有B“在近阶段,他将不会去改变他的生活方式”符合原文,所以正确答案为B。
