Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their cats are just as used to the warm shelter as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.

Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you’re cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water.

If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide t hem with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pet’s water. Sometimes owners don’t realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet can’t get anything to drink. Animals that don’t have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.

51. What do we learn about pets from Paragraph 1?

A. They are often forgotten by their owners.

B. They are used to living outdoors.

C. They build their own shelters.

D. They like to stay in warm places.

52. Why are pet owners asked to stay with their pets when they are out in cold weather?

A. To know when to bring them inside.

B. To keep them from eating bad food.

C. To help them find shelters.

D. To keep them company.

53. If pets are left on their own outdoors in cold weather, they may ___.

A. run short of clean water

B. dig deep holes for fun

C. dirty the snow nearby

D. get lost in the wild

54. What is the purpose of this text?

A. To solve a problem.

B. To give practical advice.

C. To tell an interesting story.

D. To present a research result.

B

One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift. Unlike other gifts ,it came without wrap(包装). On September 11, 1958, mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap(大腿), saying, “I promised you a gift, and here it is .” What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it over and over how much I loved it!

One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard mum and dad whispering such words as “hopeless”, “pitiful”,and “dying”, which sounded ominous.

“Christmas was coming, don’t expect any presents this year ”Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. I’d never seen him cry before.

The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard him say.” What? he’s all right?” he hung up and shouted upstairs. “The hospital said we could bring Richard home! ”

“Thank god!” I heard Mum cry.

From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them so happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there flat. But I knew they were not empty: they were filled with love!

Thousands of years ago, birthdays were considered special days. On birthdays, the bad spirits were able to harm you and change your life. It was believed that the only way to solve the problem was to have your friends and family around you, so that good wishes and presents would keep the bad spirits away. Also, noisemakers were thought to be used at parties as a way of scaring away the evil spirits.

The custom of lighting candles was created by people believing that the gods lived in the sky. By lighting candles and torches, they were sending a signal or prayer to the gods, so they could be answered. Blowing out the candles and making a wish were thought to be another way of sending a signal or a message.

This is how the way we celebrate our birthdays came about. But different cultures celebrate in different ways.

The birthday story in the Bible(圣经)that we know best is about the birth of the Christ in Bethlehem(地名:伯利恒). For nearly 2000 years since that day, the Christian world has been honoring this birth. The day many Englishmen celebrate is, of course, Christmas. There are other references to birthday parties. King Pharaoh celebrated his birthday by making a feast for his court followers. That was over 4000 years ago. The story of King Herod tells that on his birthday he made a supper for his lords, high captains and other special friends in Galilee (地名:加利利). 59. Most friendships die a nature death: people move, change jobs, or start different stages of life. Other friendships, however, end unexpectedly. When a friendship is over and y ou don’t understand why, it can be especially painful. Sometimes a friend ends your relationship without telling you why.

The loss of friendship might be worth reflecting on. Knowing when a friendship is over and why it ends may help you build stronger friendships in the future.

●See if you can find a problem.

When a friendship is over, examine your relationship. Perhaps you remember your friend complaining that you’re always late. Maybe you seldom return your friend’s phone calls. When a friend ends your relationship, try to find out the reasons why the friendship is over.

●Writer a letter to your friend.

Express you feelings about the friendship. Do you miss seeing them? Do you have any regrets? Would you act differently if you were still friends? Make it an honest communication.

●Express you feeling of being hurt or anger.

Write or talk about how you feel in a letter. When a friendship is over, it’s important to communicate exactly how hurt you feel, and why. Write until you have nothing left to say. When a friend ends your relationship, you do have the right to express yourself.

●Communicate that you are open to pick up the friendship.

When a friendship is over and you want to reconnect some day, send Christmas, or birthday cards. Say hi and send greetings through mutual(共有的) friends. When a friendship is over, don’t give up until you’re ready.

●Decide to make your present friendships better.

An adviser once told me that simply talking about your relationship strengthens your relationship. Talk to your present friends. Are they happy with your friendship? If a friend ends your relationship, learn something from it.

A. write a letter to your friend to tell your regrets

C. ask your friends whose fault on earth it is

D. send your greetings to your friend before giving up

Two University of Oklahoma scientists are starting research that they hope will someday lead to the development of a vaccine (疫苗) to fight against the HIV virus, which causes AIDS.

The research, to be carried out by Mark Lang, an assistant professor and microbiologist John West, will examine the basic aspects of the immune (免疫) system, rather than the complex aspects of the virus.

They theorize that if a key function of the body’s immune system can be found exactly, it could be the first step toward developing a vaccine.

“ To develop a new vaccine, we realized we first have to study and understand the immune system,” Lang said. Lang said their work will focus on researching the basic antibody responses from Natural Killer-like T-cells. A potential vaccine would contain NKT cells and would improve the immune system’s antibodies, which fight outside invaders(侵入物)such as HIV by preventing them from entering cells or giving the immune system enough of a boost to kill them. NKT cells, which have been a part of research into cancer and other diseases, have not previously been the focus of HIV research, Lang said.

The research will last 18 months, with tests being performed on mice. The Oklahoma Center is giving $ 300,000 toward the research, and if the research proves promising, Lang and West will apply to the National Institutes of Health for more funding.

“If we are successful, we will have made an important contribution to the field, but we will still be several steps away from an effective vaccine,” Lang said.

Lang said that in best-case scenario(最好的情况),their research could lead to a vaccine ready for use in about four years.

67.The research to be carried out will focus on _______.

A. the immune system

B. the test performed on mice

C. NKT cells

D. the HIV virus

68.We can infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 8 that __________.

C. further research needs to be done

D. the vaccine can kill all viruses

69.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Lang works at the National Institutes of Health.

B. The research will last one and a half years.

C. The vaccine is ready for use.

D. The AIDS virus may cause HIV.

70.What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Two researchers begin to study the immune system

B. NKT cells have been a part of research into cancer

C. The relationship between the immune system and HIV

D. Two scientists work to develop HIV vaccine

短文写作范文

(One possible version)

Years of school life has taught me a lot of things. What impressed me most is that failure comes from lack of efforts rather than lack of ability.

When it comes to that, memories flood into my mind. I can still well remember it was a time when I was in senior 1. Every one of my class said I was smart and clever, and I fancied myself too. But to my great disappointment, I failed in a very important test. Seeing through my puzzle, my head teacher said to me,” failure comes from lack of efforts rather than lack of ability.” It was his words that woke me up. So I spared no efforts to study and made great progress in the end.

From my own experience, I can draw a conclusion that we fail because we don’t try our best rather than we are not intelligent. Only when we have a good knowledge of it can we succeed in our life

W: Pleased to be here today. My name’s Joan, and I’d like to share with you something about my French learning. I still remember when I first started to learn the language I didn’t really have

a problem with the pronunciation. I just had a hard time memorizing words. But I made a great

effort and soon I was scoring ten out of ten in all of the tests. By the time I got to university, I could do some writing and translations without much difficulty, and I actually enjoyed learning the grammar rules. Then as part of my university course I had to go and live in France for a year. As soon as I arrived,I realized I didn’t know how to order the type of coffee I liked, and trying to find somewhere to live or stay was something difficult to deal with. I called people about information in the paper, but I had to keep putting the phone down because I couldn’t understand a word they were saying — they all spoke so quickly! I could see then that there’s no point in just knowing words if you can’t hold a conversati on with a native speaker. The ability to speak freely is what helps you get a job, hold a conversation or just buy the things you need.

普通高中课程标准实验教科书《英语》电子课本 Book 3 Unit 1 Festivals around the world B3U1P1-3 FESTIV ALS AND CELEBRATIONS Ancient Festivals Festivals and celebrations of all kinds are held everywhere. The most ancient festivals would celebrate the end of the cold weather, planting in spring and harvest in autumn. Other celebrations were held when hunters could catch animals. They would starve if food was difficult to find, so they celebrated when they had food. They lit fires and made music because they thought these festivals would bring a year of plenty. Festivals of the Dead Some festivals are held to honour the dead, or satisfy and please the ancestors, who could return either to help or to do harm. In Japan the festival is called Obon, when people should go to clean the graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors. They light lamps and play music because they think that this will lead the ancestors back to earth. In Mexico they have the Day of the Dead in early November. On this important feast day, people might eat food in shape of skulls, and cakes with “bones” on them. They offer food, flowers and gifts to the dead. The festival of Halloween had its origin as an event in memory of the dead. It is now a children’s festival, when they can go to their neighbours’ homes and ask for sweets. They dress up and try to frighten people. If they are not given anything, the children might play a trick. Festivals to Honour People Festivals can be held as an honour to famous people or to the gods. One of these is the Dragon Boat Festival in China, which honours the famous ancient poet, Qu Yuan. Another is Columbus Day in the USA, in memory of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America. In India there is a national festival on October 2 to honour Mahatma Gandhi, the leader who helped gain India’s independence from Britain. Harvest Festivals Harvest and Thanksgiving festivals can be very happy events. People are grateful because their food is gathered for the winter ,and because a season of agricultural work is over. In European countries it is the custom to decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and people get together to have meals. Some people might win awards for their animals, flowers, fruits and vegetables, like the biggest watermelon or the most handsome rooster. In China and Japan there are mid-autumn festivals, when people admire the moon and give gift of mooncakes. Spring Festivals The most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter and to the coming of spring. At the Spring Festival in China, people eat dumplings, fish and meat, and may give children lucky money in the red paper. There are dragon dances and carnivals, and families celebrate the lunar New Year together. In some Western countries there are very exciting carnivals, which take place forty days before Easter, usually in February. They might include parades, dancing in the streets day and night, loud music and colourful clothing of all kinds. Easter is an important religious and social festival in Christian countries. It celebrates the return of Jesus for Christians and it also celebrates the coming of spring. In Japan, the Cherry Blossom Festival happens a little later. The country is covered with cherry tree flowers so that it looks as though it might be covered with pink snow. People love to get together to eat, drink and have fun with each others. Festivals let us enjoy life, be proud of our customs and forget our daily life for a little while.

Sometimes, people finally get hurt. Most problems with friendships come up because people are just too selfish to care about the things that their friends need. They care about their own needs much more, which makes it hard for friendships to work. However, being selfish is part of human nature. A person is put together in order to take care of themselves and their own needs, not necessarily those needs of other people. Even though being selfish is something that all humans are born with, it is something that everyone should be against. The best thing to remember when you are a friend to anyone is that you need to treat your friends the same way that you'd like to be treated(对待). This is wonderful advice for a friendship, because it is really the only way to make sure that you are giving your friends everything you would want to be given in a friendship. Whenever you have a question about how you should treat a friend, it is easy to find an answer simply by asking yourself what you would like your friend to do for you, if he or she was in your shoes. Even if you're always thinking about how you'd like to be treated, and your friends are too, there are problems that come up from time to time in each friendship, and it is important to understand how to deal with these problems so that you can build stronger and healthier friendships. Problems like friends getting boyfriends or girlfriends and not spending enough time with their friends, or even friends finding new friends and leaving old friends behind are problems that will probably come up with one or more of your friendships. It is important to know how to deal with these friend problems so that you can keep your friends and make new ones. No one wants to have a broken friendship. 21:This passage mainly talks about ________. A.the importance of friendship B.the advantages(益处) of friendship C.the problems of friendship D.the disadvantages(劣势) of friendship 22:According to the writer, problems with friendship may appear when ________. They were on a long journey. One of the man was a teacher, the other was a farmer. They sat without talking for a while, then the farmer said, "Let's do something to pass the time."
