Directions: Read the following passages and answer the questions

Passage One

Dreams have always held a universal fascination(魅力). Some primitive societies believe that the soul leaves the body and visits the scene of the dream. Generally, however, dreams are accepted to illusions, having much in common with daydreams. When dreaming one tends to believe fully in the reality of the dream world, however inconsistent, illogical and odd it may be.

Although most dreams happen without apparent cause, dream activity may be provoked(刺激)by external influences. “Suffocation(窒息)”dreams are connected with the breathing difficulties of a heavy cold, for instance. Internal disorders such as indigestion can cause vivid dreams, and dreams of racing fire engines may be caused by the ringing of an alarm bell.

Experiments have been carried out to investigate the connection between intentionally inflicted pain and dreaming. For example, sleeper pricked(刺)with a pin perhaps dreams of fighting a battle and receiving a severe sword wound. Although the dream is stimulated by the physical discomfort, the actual events of the dream depend on the associations of the discomfort in the mind of the sleeper.

A dreamer’s eyes often move rapidly from side to side. Since people born blind do not dream visually and do not show this activity, it is thought that the dreamer may be scanning the scene represented in his dreams. If a sleeper is roused every time his eyes begin to move fast, actually depriving (打断) him of his dreams, he will make more eye movements the following night. Thus, a certain amount of dreaming seems to be a human requirement.

Passage Two

The London Stock Exchange has always been famous as a place for men only, and women

used to be strictly forbidden to enter. But the world is changing day by day, and even the Stock Exchange, which seemed to be a man’s castle, is gradually opening its doors to the other sex. On 16th November 1971, a great decision was taken. The Stock Exchange Council(the body of men that administers the Stock Exchange) decided that women should be allowed on to the new trading floor when it opened in 1973. But the “castle” had not been c ompletely conquered. The first girls to work in “ The House” were not brokers or jobbers. They were neither allowed to become partners in stockbroking firms, nor to be authorized dealers in stocks and shares. They were simply junior clerks and telephone operators.

Women have been trying to get into the Stock Exchange for many years. Several votes have been taken in “The House” to see whether the members would be willing to allow women to become members, but the answer has always been “No”. There have been three refusals of this kind since 1967. Now women are admitted, although in a very junior capacity. Two firms of jobbers made an application to the Stock Exchange Council to be allowed to employ girl clerks. Permission was finally given. A member of the Stock Exchange explained, after this news had been given, “The new floor is going to be different from the old one. All the jobbers will have their own stands, with space for a telephone and typewriters. Therefore there will have to be typists and telephone operators. So women must be allowed in.” This decision did not mean a very great victory in the war for equal rights for women. However, it was a step in the right direction. It is only a matter of time; it must happen.”

The principal speaker was to be Edward Everett, a famous statesman and speaker of the day, Everett was a handsome man and very popular everywhere.

It is said that Lincoln prepared his speech on the train while going to Gettysburg. Late that night, alone in his hotel room and tired out, he again worked briefly on the speech. The crowd of 15.000 people at first paid little attention to him. He spoke for only nine minutes. At the end there was little applause. Lincoln turned to a friend and remarked, “I have failed again.” On the train back to Washington he commented sadl y, “That speech was a flat failure, and the people are disappointed.”

Passage Four

From good reading we can derive pleasure, companionship (伴侣关系), experience, and instruction. A good book may absorb our attention so completely that for the time being we forget our surroundings and even our identity. Reading good books is one of the greatest pleasures in life. It increases our contentment when we are cheerful, and lessens our troubles when we are sad. Whatever may be our main purpose in reading, our contact with good books should never fail to give us enjoyment and satisfaction.

With a good book in our hands we should never be lonely. Whether the characters described are taken from real life or are purely imaginary, they may become our companions and friends. The people we meet in books may delight us either because they resemble human friends who we hold dear or because they present unfamiliar types whom we are glad to welcome as new acquaintances. Our human friends sometimes may bore us, but the

friends we make in books need never weary us with their company. By turning the page we can dismiss them without any fear of hurting their feelings. When human friends desert us, good books are always ready to give us friendship, sympathy, and encouragement.

One of the most valuable gifts bestowed (赠送) by books is experience. Few of us can travel far from home or have a wide range of experiences, but all of us can lead varied lives through the pages of books. Whether we wish to escape from the seemingly dull realities of everyday life or whether we long to visit some far-off place, a book will help us when nothing else can. Through books the whole world is ours for the asking. The possibilities of our literary experiences are almost unlimited. The beauties of nature, the enjoyment of music, the treasures of art, the triumphs(成功)of architecture, the marvels of engineering, are all open to the wonder and enjoyment of those who read.

Passage Five

If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of year. A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington (1876 - 1947), concluded from other men’s work and his own among peoples in different climates that climate and temperat ure have a definite effect on our mental abilities.

He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in summer than they are during the rest of

the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be low in summer.

Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man’s

mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.

Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take long vacation from thinking.

A.various of his own mental abilities from season to season

B.the results of research done by him and other scientists among peoples in different climates

C.detailed records of temperature changes in different places

D.detailed records of different ways of thinking among peoples in different climates

4. Why does the author say summer is a good time to take a long vacation from thinking _____?

A.Because a long vacation in summer helps to improve people’s mental power.

B.Because people tend to be less creative during summer.

C.Because summer is a good time for outdoor activities.

D.Because mental exertion in the summer heat taxes too much of peopl e’s energy.

Passage Six

How men first learned to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.

The power of words, then, lies in their associations (联想) —the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meanings for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should, therefore, learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar (庸俗的).
