IV . Reading Comprehension (20%) Passage 1 In the eighteenth century young ladies in Italy were taught reading, writing, music and arithmetic. But their knowledge of history and geography was very poor. Once the French ambassador in Rome was giving a ball to which many important people were invited. The Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs came very late. A young lady, who was well acquainted with him, saw him enter the ball-room and asked why he was so late. “You see,” said the Minister, “there has been a little accident at the King ’s palace.” The curious young lady asked the Minister to tell her what had happened at the King ’s palace. “Oh, nothing important,” answered the Minister. “The ambassador of Brazil, who was to be presented to the King, forgot to take his credentials with him and was obliged to go back to his hotel to bring them. If he had left them in Brazil we should have had to wait at least six months for them.” “Is Brazil so far from Rome?” asked the lady, who knew very little geography. “It is in the New World,” said the Minister. “In the New World?” repeated the lady in great astonishment. “Yes, in the New World,” answered the Minister in a sarcastic tone, “which was discovered by Christopher Columbus.” When the young lady heard this, she rushed into the middle of the ball-room and shouted as loud as she could: “Ladies and gentlemen, have you heard the latest news? A new world has just been discovered by a certain Christopher Columbus.” 36. The Italian foreign minister came to the hall very late because ____. of these aqueducts are still standing today. The Romans also built great pipes under the ground to carry away the sewage. In Rome, one of these sewage pipes (sewers) is still used today; it is 2,000 years old. The Roman Emperors even set up a government health service. They built the first great public hospitals in Europe, and they paid doctors to look after poor people.

Then the Roman Empire fell to pieces, these civilized methods of treatment disappeared from most of Europe, for more than a thousand years. People went back to the old ways. They lived in dirty conditions which helped to cause diseases; and they asked God to cure the diseases. They shut up mentally sick people in prisons. Or they burnt them alive because they were supposed to have magic powers.

But the work of the Greek and Roman doctors was no lost. Over a thousand years ago, the Arabs moved into many of the Mediterranean countries. They took big parts of the old Roman lands. They translated the Greek and Roman medical books into Arabic. Arab doctors themselves made many new discoveries.

When civilization at last came back Europe, men once again translated the Greek and Roman works on medicine into Latin. Slowly ---- very slowly ---- European doctors discovered again the things that the Greeks and Romans had known so long ago. Slowly, they began to make new discoveries. They found out more about the way the body works ---- the way our blood goes round our bodies, the way our nerves send messages from our brains to our muscles, the way these muscles move our bodies.

Passage 3

Excited by the successful landing of the rover (天体登陆车) on Mars, scientists from NASA (美国国家航空航天局) have spent the last few days studying data from the robot and working on

getting it ready to roll. Spirit made a dangerous, but safe landing on Mars on what scientists believe is the rocky bed of an ancient lake that once may have contained life. Just three hours later, the six-wheeled rover began sending black-and-white photos of its surroundings back 170 million kilometers to Earth. The rover sent back a few color photos on Monday. The scientists were overjoyed by the success. Two of every three past landings on Mars have failed. “It ’s a big step forward for all humanity. Now we have another rover on another planet, exploring a new world. What more could you ask for?” said Charles Elachi, director of NASA ’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (喷气推进器实验室) The first images (图像) from Spirit show a flat, wind-damaged surface dotted with small rocks. The scene made scientists eager to send the rover around the planet in search of evidence (证据) that the landing site was once covered with water. The US$820 million project also includes a twin golf-cart-sized rover called Opportunity, set to land on Mars ’ other side. The dozens of initial, low-resolution (低分辨率) photos show Spirit landed upright, level and facing south on a flat stretch of the hole that the scientists believe once contained a lake. It will be about a week before the six-wheeled robot is ready to roll off its lander and move around Mars. Spirit ’s successful landing has ended the trend of failed missions (任务) to Mars. NASA ’s last attempt to land on Mars, in 1999, ended in failure. Its last successful landing was in 1997, when Pathfinder carried the tiny Sojourner rover to the surface of Mars. 46. What are the names of the rovers mentioned in this passage? A. Spirit, Opportunity, NASA. B. Spirit, Pathfinder, Sojourner. C. Spirit, Opportunity, Pathfinder. D. Spirit, Opportunity, Sojourner. 47. What can we infer from Charles Elachi ’s words “What more could you ask for?” in Paragraph 5? A. The scientists want to know what they can get from the rover. B. The scientists don ’t know what is waiting for the rover. C. The scientists are very satisfied with the successful landing. D. The scientists intend to send more rovers to Mars. 48. The images from Spirit ____. A. prove that the landing site was once covered with water B. show that some parts of the surface of Mars are wind-damaged C. are evidence that the rocky bed of an ancient lake contains life D. show there was once a lake on the surface of Mars 49. After landing successfully on Mars, Spirit ____. A. began to roll off its lander and move around Mars B. was busy moving around the landing area C. began sending very clear pictures of its surroundings immediately D. will be ready to move around Mars in about one week ’s time 50. According to the passage, which of the following is not true? A. The successful landing of Spirit ended the trend of failed missions. B. Scientists were convinced by the pictures sent back by Spirit that the landing site was rocky and wind-damaged. C. After its landing, Spirit sent back black-and-white photos as well as color ones. D. The landing site of Opportunity is not far away from Spirit. Passage 4

Like every language, American English is full of special expressions, phrases that come from ……………………………………………………………

the day-to-day life of the people and develop in their own way. Our expression today is “to face the music”.

When someone says, “Well, I guess I’ll have to face the music,” it does not mean he’s planning to go to concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this and that, and why you didn’t do this or that. Sour music indeed, but it has to be faced. At sometime or another, every one of us has had to face the music, especially as children. We can all remember father’s angry voice, “I want to talk to you.” It is only that we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was!

The phrase “to face the music” is familiar to every American, young and old. It is more than 150 years old. And where did this expression come from? One of the explanations comes from the American novelist, James Fenimore Cooper. He said, in 1851, that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on the stage. When they got their cue (提示) to go on, they often said, “Well, it’s time to face the music.”And that is exactly what they did ---- facing the orchestra (交响乐队) which was just below them. An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of an audience that might be friendly or perhaps hostile (敌对的), especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So the expression “to face the music”comes to mean, “having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you know you have no other choice.”

Complete the following sentences with the information given in the passage.

51. The expression “to face the music” is so old that it is familiar to ____.

52. In American English, as well as in ____, there are a lot of special expressions which come from

53. Actors might be frightened or nervous as they go on to the stage if they cannot remember ____.

54. The phrase “to face the music” came up ____ ago.

55. If you fail to finish you task, the boss will ____ you ____ to give an explanation.
