Section B

Directions: There are several passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.

Passage One

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

Consumers are being confused and misled by the hodge-podge (大杂烩) of environmental claims made by household products, according to a "Green Labeling" study published by Consumers International.

Among the report's more outrageous (令人无法容忍的) findings, a German fertilizer described itself as "earthworm friendly", a brand of flour said it was "non-polluting" and a British toilet paper claimed to be "environmentally friendlier".

The study was written and researched by Britain's National Consumer Council (NCC) for lobby group Consumer International. It was funded by the German and Dutch governments and the European Commission.

"While many good and useful claims are being made, it is clear there is a long way to go in ensuring shoppers

are adequately informed about the environmental impact of products they buy," said Consumers International director Anna Fielder.

The 10-country study surveyed product packaging in Britain, Western Europe, Scandinavia and the United States.

It found that products sold in Germany and the United Kingdom made the most environmental claims on average.

The report focused on claims made by specific products, such as detergent (洗涤剂), insect sprays and some garden products. It did not test the claims, but compared them to labeling guidelines set by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in September, 1999.

Researchers documented claims of environmental friendliness made by about 2,000 products and found many too vague or too misleading to meet ISO standards. "Many products had specially-designed labels to make them seem environmentally friendly, but in fact many of these symbols mean nothing," said report researcher Philip Page.

"Laundry detergents made the most number of claims with 158. Household cleaners were second with 145 separate claims, while paints were third on our list with 73. The high numbers show how very confusing it must be for consumers to sort the true from the misleading," he said.

The ISO labeling standards ban vague or misleading claims on product packaging, because terms such as "environmentally friendly" and "non-polluting" cannot be verified. "What we are now pushing for is to have multinational corporations meet the standards set by the ISO," said Page.

Passage Two

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

One of my favorite posters says, "Life is a test. It is only a test. Had this been a real life you would have been instructed where to go and what to do." Whenever I think of this humorous bit of wisdom, it reminds me not to take my life so seriously.

When you look at life and its many challenges as a test, or series of tests, you begin to see each issue you face as an opportunity to grow, a chance to discover more about life. Whether you're being bombarded (攻击、质问) with problems, responsibilities, even insurmountable (不能克服的) difficulties, when looked at as a test, you always have a chance to succeed, in the sense of rising above that which is challenging you. If, on the other hand, you see each new issue you face as a serious battle that must be won in order to survive, you're probably in for a very rocky journey. The only time you're likely to be happy is when everything is working out just right. And we all know how often that happens.

As an experiment, see if you can apply this idea to something you are forced to deal with. Perhaps you have much pressure from your parents or you have a demanding boss. See if you can redefine the issue you face from being a "problem" to being a test. Rather than struggling with your issue, see if there is something you can learn from it. Ask yourself, "Why is this an issue in my life? What would it mean and what would be involved to rise above it? Could I possibly look at this issue any differently? Can I see it as a test of some kind?"

If you give this strategy a try you may be surprised at your changed responses. It has become far more acceptable to you to accept things as they are.

Passage Two

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

Thierry Daniel Henry is a French football striker currently playing for Spanish club FC Barcelona and the French national team.

Henry was born and brought up in the tough neighborhood of Les Ulis, Essonne — a suburb of Paris — where he played for an array of local sides as a youngster and showed great promise as a goal-scorer. He was spotted by AS Monaco in 1990 and signed instantly, making his professional debut in 1994. Good form led to an international call-up in 1998, after which he signed for the Italian defending champions Juventus. He had

a disappointing season playing on the wing, before joining Arsenal for £10.5 million in 1999.

It was at Arsenal that Henry made his name as a world-class footballer. Despite initially struggling in the Premiership, he emerged as Arsenal's top goal-scorer for almost every season of his tenure there. Under long-time mentor and coach Arsène Wenger, Henry became a prolific striker and Arsenal's all-time leading scorer with 226 goals in all competitions. The Frenchman won two league titles and three FA Cups with the gunners shoulder to shoulder; he was twice nominated for the FIFA World Player of the Year, was named the PFA Players' Player of the Year twice, and the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year three times. Henry spent his final two seasons with Arsenal as club captain, leading them to the UEFA Champions League final in 2006. In June 2007, after eight years with Arsenal, he transferred to FC Barcelona for a fee of €24 million.

Henry has enjoyed similar success with the French national squad, having won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2000 (the Delaunay Cup). In October 2007, he surpassed Michel Platini's record to become France's top goal-scorer of all time.

Off the pitch, as a result of his own experience, Henry is an active spokesperson against racism in football.

Section B

?Passage One

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

Basically, without the possibility of failure there is little possibility of success. Education is in danger of becoming a branch of the entertainment industry. While education should indeed be entertaining where possible, it cannot always be fun. Often, it needs the "hard yards".

It appears that some educationalists feel that if something causes worry it should be avoided at all costs.

I would disagree. Facing up to challenges helps develop an individual. Avoiding challenges can severely limit

their potential. Tougher individuals are able to try and fail. The less tough may simply fail to try anything new.

I am in no way advocating putting children under pressure simply for the sake of it. The real debate is perhaps

what pressures are unavoidable. While operating slightly outside your comfort zone can be life enhancing, traumatic events are always destructive. It's not about "throwing people into the deep end", but rather encouraging them to put their foot in the water and giving them the skills to float.

This latter approach is basically the work I and my team do at the University of Hull. Firstly, we measure mental toughness and then provide interventions to enhance this. These interventions include psychological skills such as goal setting, relaxation, visualization and thought control. They are simple and straightforward, and have a proven track record of helping a range of people in stressful situations. So, for example, many children will say: "What happens if it goes wrong?" We work hard to rephrase this so that the sentence reads: "What happens if it goes right?" One word difference, but a world away when thinking about challenges.

We try to help children deal more effectively with life using a three-step approach. Firstly, it is important

to find out what the child really wants. In other words, setting appropriate goals. This is complex. Children lacking confidence will often set really low goals or, perversely, really high ones. It is important to set realistic and achievable goals. Then it is a matter of finding out what factors are helping the individual to achieve these goals and what factors are working against this. The final step is to identify which of these factors can be controlled, or at least influenced, and what factors the child is in reality stuck with.

Redirecting children's energies to movable obstacles can produce huge life changes.

However, I think that for most of us we have become stress averse and overreact to it. It has always been there, and it has always been the case that some people thrive on it, some need help to deal with it and some peoples' lives are ruined by it.

Showing our children that stress can be confronted and beaten offers them a way forward. The more a fear is avoided, the bigger it gets.

Passage Two

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers urged, "Barbara, be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience."

How right they were! Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends.

"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm," wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang in there when the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers, "I can do it!" when others shout, "No, you can't."

It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock, a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted. Yet she didn't let up on her experiments. Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.

We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder as anyone knows who has ever seen an infant's delight at the jingle of keys or the scurrying of a beetle.

It is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, whatever their age.

At 90, cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes. Music, for Casals, was an elixir that made life a never ending adventure. As author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote, "Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul."

How do you rediscover the enthusiasm of your childhood? The answer, I believe, lies in the word itself.

"Enthusiasm" comes from the Greek and means "God within." And what is God within is but an abiding sense of love — proper love of self (self-acceptance) and, from that, love of others.

Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money or title or power. If we cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can as a part-time avocation, like the head of state who paints, the nun who runs marathons, the executive who handcrafts furniture.

Elizabeth Layton was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended bouts of depression that had plagued her for at least 30 years, and the quality of her work led one critic to say, "I am tempted to call Layton

a genius." Elizabeth has rediscovered her enthusiasm.

We can't afford to waste tears on "might-have-beens." We need to turn tears into sweat as we go after "what-can-be."

We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses — finding pleasure in the fragrance of a backyard garden, the crayoned picture of a six-year-old, the enchanting beauty of a rainbow. It is such enthusiastic love of life that puts a sparkle in our eyes, a lilt in our steps and smoothes the wrinkles from our souls.

36. How important is enthusiasm in one's life according to the statement "It is the paste that helps you hang

in there when the going gets tough" in Para. 3?

Part II Reading Comprehension ( 25 minutes )

Section B

Directions: There are several passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.

Passage One

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

Today, there are many avenues open to those who wish to continue their education. However, nearly all require some break in one's career in order to attend school full time.

Part-time education, that is, attending school at night or for one weekend a month, tends to drag the process out over time and puts the completion of a degree program out of reach of many people. Additionally, such programs require a fixed time commitment which can also impact negatively on one's career and family time.

Of the many approaches to teaching and learning, however, perhaps the most flexible and accommodating is that called distance learning. Distance learning is an educational method which allows a student the flexibility to study at his or her own pace to achieve the academic goals which are so necessary in today's world.

The time required to study may be set aside at the student's convenience with due regard to the other requirements in his or her life. Additionally, the student may enroll in distance learning courses from virtually any place in the world, while continuing to pursue their chosen career. Tutorial assistance may be available via regular airmail, telephone, facsimile machine, teleconferencing and over the Internet.

Good distance learning programs are characterized by the inclusion of a subject evaluation tool with every subject. This precludes the requirement for a student to travel away from home to take a test. Another characteristic of a good distance learning program is the equivalence of the distance learning course with the same subject materials to the course on the home campus. The diploma or degree should also be the same whether distance learning or on-campus study is employed. The individuality of the professor-student relationship is another characteristic of a good distance learning program. In the final analysis, a good distance learning program has a place not only for the individual student but also the corporation or business that wants to work in partnership with their employees for the educational benefit, professional development, and business growth of the organization. Sponsoring distance learning programs for their employees gives the business the advantage of retaining career-minded people while contributing to their personal and professional growth through education.

A) It requires some break in one's career.该选项共0人选择

B) It tends to last too long for many people to complete a degree program.该选项共0人选择

Part IV Translation ( 14 minutes )

Directions: Translate the following passage(s) into English (with the given words or phrases).

?

?正确答案(20分): As we all know, "Failure is the mother of success." But few people can really understand what the saying means. I am sure that no one in the world dare say he hasn't met any trouble all his life, therefore we must face failure. In fact, failure is not fearful, but the important thing is how

to face it correctly. Being courageous to face failure, people will never take their fate lying down. They will try their best to work harder and harder until they succeed at last. Not being courageous to face setbacks, people will have no chance to enjoy the pleasure of success and they have nothing to do but feel sad and empty all day and all night. In fact, they lose the chance of success themselves. My friends, whenever in trouble, please remember, "Failure is the mother of success."
