She is widely seen as proof that good looks can last forever. But,at nearly

500 years of age, time is catching up with the Mona Lisa.

The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo da Vinci in

1505,is getting worse by the year, according to the Louvre Museum where

it is housed.

“The thin, wooden panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted in oil has

changed shape since experts checked it t wo years ago.”the museum said.Visitors have noticed changes, but repairing the world's most famous painting is not easy.Experts are not sure about the materials the Italian artist used and their current(现在的)chemical state.

Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every year, many attracted by the mystery of her smile.“It's very interesting that when you' re not looking at her,she seems to be smiling, and then, you look at her and she slops.”said Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University.“It' s because direct vision(视觉)is excellent at picking up detail, but less suited to looking at shadows.Da Vinci painted the smile in shadows.”

However, the actual history of the Mona Lisa is just as mysterious as the smile.Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him, until it was eventually sold to France's King

Francis I in 1519.

In 1911,the painting was stolen from the Louvre Museum by a former employee, who took it out of the museum hidden under his coat.He said he planned to return it to Italy. The painting was sent back to France two years later.

During World War II,French men hid the painting in small towns to keep it out of the hands of German forces.

Like many old ladies, the Mona Lisa has some interesting stories to tell.

C.is getting more valuable with years passing

D.will rot away

2.The smile of the Mona Lisa can only be seen________.

A.by indirect vision B.at a distance

B.people are interested in the stories about the Mona Lisa

C.some mysteries still remain to be solved about the Mona Lisa

D.many more stories will be told about the Mona Lisa

4.Experts haven't had any repairs on the Mona Lisa because________.

A.it is now in a poor chemical state

B.they don't know how to replace the wooden panel

C.they don't have the materials Da Vinci used

D.they are afraid it will be done further damage

B

The need to feed a growing population is putting much pressure on the world’s supply of water. With 97% of the w orld’s water too salty to be drunk or used in agriculture, the worldwide supply of water needs careful management, especially in agriculture. Although the idea of a water shortage (短缺) seems strange to someone fortunate enough to live in a high rainfall country, many of the world’s agricultural industries experience constant water shortages.

Although dams can be built to store water for agricultural use in dry areas and dry seasons, the costs of water redistribution (重新分配) are very high. Not only is there the cost of the engineering itself, but there is also an environmental cost to be considered. Where valleys (山谷) are flooded to create dams, houses are lost and wildlife homes destroyed. Besides, water may flow easily through pipes to fields, but it cannot be transported from one side of the world to the other. Each country must therefore rely on the management of its own water to supply its farming requirements.

This is particularly troubling for countries with agricultural industries in areas dependent on irrigation (灌溉). In Texas, farmers’ overuse of irrgation water has resulted in a 25% reduction of the water stores. In the Central Valley area of southwestern USA, a huge water engineering project provided water for farming in dry valleys, but much of the water use has been poorly managed.

Saudi Arabia’s attempts to grow wheat in desert areas have seen the pumping of huge quantities of irrigation water from underground reserves. Because there is no rainfall in these areas, such reserves can only decrease, and it is believed that fifty years of pumping will see them run dry.

1. From the first two paragraphs we learn that.

A. much of the world’s water is available for use

B. people in high rainfall countries feel lucky

C. the costs of water redistribution should be considered

D. water can be easily carried through pipes across the world

2. Which of the following is true?

A. The water stores in Texas have been reduced by 75%.

B. Most industries in the world suffer from water shortages.

C. The underground water in Saudi Arabia might run out in 50 years.

D. Good management of water use resulted from the project in the Central Valley.

3. What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?

A. Steps to improving water use management.

B. Ways to reduce the costs of building dams.

C. Measures to deal with worldwide water shortages.

D. Approaches to handling the pressure on water supply.

4. The text is mainly about.

A. water supply and increasing population

B. water use management and agriculture

C. water redistribution and wildlife protection

D. water shortages and environmental protection

C

Businesses are witnessing a difficult time, which has in turn produced influence on consumer s’ desire to go green. However, shoppers are still laying stress on environmental concerns.

Two thirds of customers say that environmental considerations inform their purchases to the same degree as they did a year ago, while more than a quarter say that they are now even better aware of the environmental effect on what they buy.

This may help to influence how shops store goods on their shelves. And the companies should still make efforts to become more environmentally friendly. Two out of three people think it is

important to buy from environmentally responsible companies, with about one in seven saying that they had even decided to take their custom elsewhere if they felt a company’s environmental reputation was not good enough.

Harry Morrison, chief executive (主管) of the Carbon Trust, sympathizes:“I understand this situation where survival is very important now. But from environmental considerations, the clock is ticking—we don’t have much time. In addition, cutting carbon has an immediate effect as costs drop and a medium-term benefit for the brand.”

Larger companies have an extra motivation to look at reducing their carbon footprint, as new rules next year will require businesses to buy carbon allowances to make up for their emissions (排放). Those that have taken early action will have a head start. More than two thirds of consumers are not clear about which companies are environmentally responsible. This suggests that firms that are able to relay clearly their message to the public will be in a pole position to attract shoppers.

The Carbon Trust believes that it can help by informing customers about the good work companies are doing. “When companies are granted (授予) the standard, they can use a logo (标识) in all their marketing which makes it clear that the y are working towards cutting emissions,” Mr. Morrison said.

1. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. Businesses are finding ways to send their message to the shoppers.

B. Companies will soon get information about cutting carbon emissions.

C. Firms are making efforts to encourage customers to keep goods at home.

D. Firms are urged to cut carbon emissions by shoppers’ environmental awareness.

2. The underlined word “inform” in Paragraph 2 probably means“”.

A. affect

B. change

C. disturb

D. reject

3. According to Harry Morrison, businesses.

A. will benefit from cutting carbon emissions

B. should buy carbon allowances for shoppers

C. are required to make up for their carbon emissions

D. have encouraged shoppers to take their custom elsewhere

4. We can learn from the passage that businesses will.

A. have a strong desire to reduce costs

B. use the same logo in their marketing

C. gain advantages by taking early action

D. attract more shoppers by storing goods

One of the advantages of being self-employed is that the profit the business makes belongs to the owner. If the self-employed person is successful in business, he or she has the chance to earn plenty of money and even become wealthy. The profit earned by a self-employed person is the reward for his or her effort, ability, and creativity. Thus, a second advantage of being self-employed is that a person’s intelligence and abilities have a direct effect on his or her earnings. People who have outstanding abilities or intelligence often find they can earn far more through self-employment than they can through working as an employee. A third advantage of being self-employed is that a person can control their working hours. While not all self-employed people are completely free to choose whatever hours they want to work, most of them have more control over this area than the people who work for salaries or wages.

As with most things in life, being self-employed is not without problems first, being one’s own boss places the responsibility for success directly on that individual’s shoulders. Abilities and intelligence will be put to the test. Everyone has some weaknesses and is less capable in some things than in others. These weaknesses will affect how successful a self-employed person is. Second, though the self-employed can earn considerable profits with a successful business, losses can force them out of business and, in some instances, place them in debt. A third disadvantage concerns income security. Self-employed people have no guaranteed income. Their earnings can vary greatly from year to year, depending on business conditions. Salaried people, on the other hand, can generally count on continued earnings from year to year. In addition, salaried people often enjoy fringe benefits(额外补贴), which are all of the benefits provided for employees in addition to wages and salaries. One of these benefits may be insurance paid for by the employer that continues the employee’s salary in the event of sickness or accident. Many self-employed people do not have such protection, unless they put money aside themselves.

A篇

6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.
