Since December, there have been tens of thousands of COVID-19 cases both in and out of China, caused by a previously unknown virus: novel coronavirus (新冠病毒).

It’s not the first time for viruses to make headlines. Viruses have brought big trouble to humans, with their potential to cause widespread disease and death.

What are they? Viruses are considered to be non-living organisms (有机物). They can infect animals and plants, making them sick. They contain genetic materials like DNA and are protected by a coating of protein.

Unlike bacteria (细菌), viruses can’t reproduce on their own. Instead, they invaded the cells of living organisms to reproduce, spread and take over. But the basic question is: where did viruses first come from?

Until now, no clear explanation for their origin exists. “Tracing the origins of viruses is difficult,” Ed Rybicki, a virologist at the university of Cape Town in South Africa, told Scientific American, “because viruses don’t leave fossils (化石) and because of the tricks they use to make copies of themselves within the cells they’ve invaded.”

Understanding the origins of viruses means fully understanding the history of their hosts—not only humans, but also bacteria, plants and other animals, which is a complicated task, says Nature.

However, there are three main theories to explain the origin of viruses. First, viruses started as independent organisms, and then became parasites (寄生者). Second, viruses evolved (进化) from pieces of DNA or RNA that “escaped” from larger organisms. The third one is that viruses co-evolved with their host cells, which means they existed alongside these cells.

For the time being, these are only theories. The technology and proofs we have today cannot be used to test these theories and discover the most plausible explanation. Continuing studies may provide us with clearer answers. Or future studies may find that the answer is even more mysterious than it now appears.

Being safe in your everyday life needs knowledge (知识). If you remember the following information, your life will be much safer.

Always notice the environment around you. You shouldn’t walk alone outside. Make sure where the public phones are. If anything dangerous happens, you can find them easily.

Your bag should be carried towards the front of your body instead of putting it on your back. When a bus is full of people, it is easy enough for a thief to take away the things in the bag on your back.

If you are followed by someone whom you don’t know, cross the street and go to the other way, let the person understand that you know he or she is after you. Next, don’t go home at once. You are safer in the street than you are alone in your home or in a lift.

If you have to take a bus to a place far away, try to get to the stop a few minutes earlier before the bus leaves. This stops other people from studying you. On the bus, don’t sit alone. Sit behind the driver or with other people. Don’t sleep.

38. Which of the following is NOT safe when you are out?

A. Go home alone late at night.

B. Make sure where the public phones are.

Cars make our lives more convenient. But they can also be a problem. For example, fossil fuel(化石燃料) cars mainly cause air pollution.

To improve the environment, many countries are developing electric vehicles (EVs, 电动车). Among them, China is taking a leading role and has created the world's largest EV market.

Last year, over 40 percent of the 753,000 EVs sold in the world were sold in China, more than twice as many as the number sold in the United States.

"Filling up a fossil fuel car with gas(汽油) is more expensive than charging (充电) an electric car," said Wu Hao, who bought an electric car this year.

However, there are still some problems. It can be hard to find charging piles(充电桩) and the cars can't go far before needing to be recharged.

Some of these problems are being solved. In 2014,China had 31,000 charging piles. Now China has the world's

largest EV charging network, with more than 167, 000 charging piles in total.

Developing EVs is one of many efforts that China has made to cut down pressure on its environment after the government promised to stop increases in carbon dioxide emissions(二氧化碳排放量) by 2030.

"As China goes, so will the world's car industry," The Wall Street Journal said. China has taken a leading role in the world's electric vehicle industry.

"Why do I live? Why do I wish for anything, or do anything? Is there anything in my life that will not be destroyed by my death?" Like Leo Tolstoy, the famous Russian writer, many people ask these difficult questions. Tolstoy spent his whole life trying to answer these difficult questions.

As a young man, he thought people could achieve perfection if they tried hard enough. So he worked very hard to be the best in everything. He thought that he would find meaning and truth in success.

In 1850s. Tolstoy wrote his first stories. He wrote about his life in the army. He also told stories about his childhood. These works were published and Tolstoy became a well-known writer.

He earned the respect he always wanted. Many rich and smart men met and talked with Tolstoy. Some of them were writers like him. They talked a lot about faith ( 信仰) and the meaning of life. But soon Tolstoy recognized that these men were not perfect. Now he knew they could not answer his questions about faith.

So in the 1860s, Tolstoy tried a different way to find the meaning of life. He opened a school for the children of his serfs-the people who worked on his land. These workers were very poor. He wanted to help them because he thought they were more honest than the rich people he knew.

Tolstoy learned a lot from his workers. He understood how they worked hard to support their

families. He began to believe that marriage and family would give his life meaning. So in 1862, Leo Tolstoy married a young woman named Sonya Behrs.

The next 15 years were the best years of Tolstoy's life. It was during this time that he wrote his most famous books-War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Many experts say that War and Peace is one of the greatest books ever written. In these books, Tolstoy believed humans should live a simple life and take care of their families. China’s biggest and most powerful carrier (运载) rocket roared (轰鸣) into space on Dec 27, 2019. The Long March 5 kicked off its mission (任务) at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan.

The 57-meter-tall rocket, known as the Long March 5 Y3, is the tallest, strongest and most technologically sophisticated (技术复杂的) rocket in China. Since it is much bigger than China’s other Long March rockets, people call it “Fat 5”. The rocket is able to carry spacecraft (航天器) weighing up to 25 tons – roughly the weight of 16 midsize cars –into low-Earth orbit (近地轨道), China Daily reported. This payload capacity (有效载荷) is about 2.5 times greater than that of any other Chinese rocket.

During the December launch, the Long March 5 successfully sent the Shijian 20 experimental satellite into orbit. At more than 8 tons, it is the heaviest and most advanced communications (通信) satellite built by China.

The launch also tested key techn ologies that will be used to take the Chang’e 5 probe (探测器) to the moon, according to the China National Space Administration.

The success of the Long March 5 launch was hard-earned. The rocket’s first launch was carried out in November 2016 at the Wenchang center. A second mission took place in July 2017 at the same site, but failed to send a satellite into orbit. According to project leaders, in the two years since that failure, the rocket’s research team held more than 600 seminars (研讨会) and carried out at least 1,000 experiments and tests to improve the rocket.

“Compared with the Long March 5 Y2 that was used in the failed second mission, the new one has about 200 technical improvements, including changes to the engine design,” Li Dong, the rocket’s chief designer (总设计师), said to China Daily.

The future missions of the Long March 5 will include a trip to Mars, taking back moon samples (样本), and placing parts of a manned (载人的) space station into orbit.

34. What do we know about the Long March 5?

A. It was launched at the start of 2019.

If you are in Shanghai and want to throw away a cup of milk tea, be careful. You need to follow these steps: first, pour out any leftover into a wet waste bin; second, put the paper wrapper into a recyclable waste bin; third, throw the single-use cup into a dry waste bin.

Sound difficult and annoying? You'll have to get used to it. From July 1st on, people in Shanghai are required to sort their garbage according to strict rules.

Why should we sort our garbage? The answer lies in the increasing amount of waste we are producing. Chinese cities produce over 200 million tons of waste each year, according to China Economic Net. Most of this waste is buried in landfills, which may pollute the water and soil. Moreover, we are running out of space for new landfills.

In fact, more than half of our waste can be recycled. Recyclable garbage can be made into new materials. For example, wet garbage can be used to make gas, heat and many other kinds of useful things. But in order to recycle garbage efficiently, we need to sort our garbage.

.

Can't garbage-processing companies do the sorting job focus? They can. But that requires a lot of work and costs lots of money. Things will become much easier if each of us can sort our own garbage. Besides, the annoying task of sorting might encourage people to produce less waste. Do you still want to buy that milk tea?

38. If you want to throw a drink bottle, which of the following dustbins should you throw in?

A. a recyclable waste bin

B. a poisonous waste bin

C. a dry waste bin.

D. a wet waste bin

39. What does the underlined word "landfills" mean in Chinese?

Some people might think that online privacy (隐私) is a, well, private matter. If you don’t want your information getting out online, don’t put it on social media. Simple, right?

But keeping your information private isn’t just about your own choices. It’s about your friends’ choices, too. Results from a study show that, with the development of all kinds of social media, people may need to stop and think about just how much they control their personal information, and where the boundaries of their privacy are.

When someone joins a social network, the first order of business is, of course, to find friends. To help the users find their friends, many apps offer to import contact lists ( 导入联系人清单) from someone’s phone or e-mail or Facebook, to find matches with people already in the network.

“Sharing those contact lists seems harmless”, says David Garcia, a computational social scientist at the Complexity Science Hub Vienna in Austria. “People giving contact lists, they’re not doing anything wrong,” he says. “You are their friend. You give them the e-mail address and phone number.” Most of the time, you probably want to stay in touch with the person, possibly even via the social media site.

But the social network then has that information — whether or not the owner of it wants it to be shared.

Social platforms’ ability to collect information into what are called shadow profiles first came to light with a Facebook bug in 2013. The bug accidentally shared the e-mail addresses and phone numbers of some 6 million users with all of their friends, even when the information wasn’t public.

Facebook immediately corrected the mistake. But later, some users noticed that the phone numbers on their Facebook profiles had still been filled in — even though they had not given Facebook their digits. Instead, Facebook had collected the numbers from the contact lists innocently provided by their friends, and filled in the missing information for them. A shadow profile had become reality.

It’s no surprise that a social platform could take names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers and match them up with other people on the same platform. But Garcia wanted to know whether these shadow profiles could be extended to people not on the social platform at all.

He turned to a social network called Friendster which was closed up in 2015. Friendster was launched in 2002. In 2008, the social site attracted more than 115 million users. But by 2009 people began to jump ship for other sites, and finally Friendster closed for good. However, by using the Internet Archive — a nonprofit library, Garcia still found lots of users’ personal information about Friendster.

When I was in primary school, I got into a big argument with a boy in my class. I forgot what the argument was about, but I will never forget the lesson I learned that day.

I thought that I was right and he was wrong -and he thought that I was wrong and he was right. The teacher decided to teach us a lesson.

She brought us to the front of the class and asked him to stand on one side of her desk and me on the other. In the middle of her desk was a large round ball. I could clearly see that it was black. She asked the boy what color the ball was. "White,” he answered.

I couldn't believe he said the ball was white, when it was obviously black!

Another argument started between us, this time about the color of the ball.

The teacher told us to change places and then asked me what color the ball was. I had to answer "White". It was a ball with two differently colored sides, and from his side it was white.

Natural scenes often become the themes of poetry. Poets watch nature closely and present its beauty in their poems. For example, pets may describe natural scenes such as spring day or a snowy day. Besides, poets often express their feelings

about nature by creating lively images (形象) in poems.

When we read the lines “When the leaves hang trembling” and “When the trees bow down their heads,” they remind us of a windy day. The poet successfully creates an image of the wind by describing details of the scene. These help readers think of the moment when the wind passes by. We might even how our own heads, imagining that we are the trees.

In the poem “Night”, Blake describes many details of a night scene. People know very well what they can see at night, like stars or the moon. The year 2019 marked the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Over the past 70 years, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), China has experienced historic changes and made great achievements.

The nation has experienced great economic (经济的) growth in the past seven decades (十年).

In 1978, China’s GDP was the 11th highest in the world. In 2010, China overtook Japan to become the second-largest economy in the world after the US. The country is still in that position now.

With China’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, the country has become a major power for world economic growth. Since 2002, it has helped the world economy grow by nearly 30 percent on average (平均). The entry into the WTO also allowed less expensive foreign foods, such as American grapes and Japanese veal (小牛肉), to be sold in Chinese supermarkets. At the same time, many foreign electronics factories have moved to China, making these products cheaper. Today China is the world’s largest exporter (出口国) and the second-largest importer (进口国), according to China Daily.

In fighting poverty (贫穷) in recent decades, China has made historic achievements and become a major contributor (贡献者) to the improvement of people’s lives around the world. To reduce (减少) poverty, the Chinese government has done a lot of work. It built roads, created jobs, and gave people better education and medical services. The country has promised to eradicate (根除) extreme (极端) poverty by 2020, and to date, more than 800 million Chinese have been lifted out of poverty, China Daily noted.

As for education, many Chinese are going abroad to study and do research. Over 600,000 Chinese went abroad to study in 2018, according to China Daily. China has also set up 536 Confucius Institutes (孔子学院) in more than 150 countries. Many foreign students are learning Chinese language and culture there.

34. What do we know about China’s economy?

On Feb 26, when an Italian lawmaker (议员) went into the country’s Lower Chamber with a mask to prevent the novel coronavirus, he was criticized (批评) by his colleagues for “causing panic (恐慌)”. Articles from Western media carry headlines such as “No, you do not need face masks to prevent coronavirus.” You might be surprised, as in China and other Asian countries, people have willingly put masks on during the outbreak.

Western thoughts about masks

In the West, people are taught to wear masks only when they get sick. Masks are seen as a tool to protect sick people and prevent the disease from spreading, so healthy people don’t need to wear them. Therefore, during the novel coronavirus outbreak, overseas Chinese students said that they would be “stared at like a virus spreader” if they go out with a mask. According to a survey done by Global Times among some European and American people, wearing a mask in public can make them feel “worried”, “shy”, and “afraid of being looked at differently.”

But as the number of COVID-19 cases continues to grow around the world, many people in the West are changing their attitudes. In the US, for example, the need for masks is very high now. The US surgeon general (卫生局局长) has been asking people to avoid hoarding masks, as they are more needed in hospitals than by the general public, for this reason people should buy enough for their needs.

Mask culture in the East

In Asian countries like China and Japan, there has been a long tradition of mask-wearing. In China, for example, when doctor Wu Liande invented the modern medical mask during the pneumonic plague (肺鼠疫) in 1910, the mask became a symbol of China’s position as a modern, scientific nation, according to Scottish medical anthropologist (人类学家) Christos Lynteris. The 2003 SARS epidemic again led to the wide use of masks as a form of anti-viral protection in China and elsewhere in East Asia.

In Japan, wearing masks has long been seen as a manner to reassure (使安心) others when one catches a cold or flu. Some Japanese also turn masks into fashion accessories (配饰), with different colors and patterns to match their clothes. Wearing masks is also a way to “hide” for young women when they don’t have their makeup on.

In more collectivist (集体主义的) cultures in Asia, wearing masks might also be a symbol of solidarity (团结) during the outbreak, according to Lynteris. “Mask culture [in Asia] creates a sense of a fate (命运) shared, common obligation and civic (公民的) duty.” People wear masks “to show that they want to stick together” in the face of danger, Lynteris wrote.

38. Why don’t healthy people in the West wear masks?

A. They don’t think masks can prevent disease.

B. They think masks are for sick people to wear.

C. Only medical workers need to wear masks.

D. Wearing a mask looks funny.

39. Masks have been widely used in China since _____.

A. the invention of the modern medical mask

B. the pneumonic plague in 1910

C. Christos Lynteris wore one publicly

D. the outbreak of SARS in 2003

40. What does the underline word “hoarding” in paragraph 4 mean?

A. buying enough things people need

B. collecting and keeping a large amount of things

C. selling a large amount of things

D. giving others something that they need

41. The purpose of the story is to _____.

A. explain why Westerners don’t wear masks

B. prove the importance of wearing masks during an epidemic

C. show how opinions about masks differ between different countries

D. explain the history of masks

E

I recently watched a TV program Real Sports where the presenter looked into the culture of handing out participation (参与)trophies to children. There's no doubt that today's kids live in a world of scoreless games and everyone gets a trophy. Sometimes when a league decides to award(奖励)just the winners instead of all participants, the parents buy their own trophies for the whole team!

However, when we try to protect children from losing at the early ages, are they less prepared when real competition kicks in? People who support giving trophies say they want to make each child feel special, but how does this make them feel special? Stanford University looked at this recently and found that although kids react positively to praise-they enjoy hearing that they're talented, smart and so on, they break down at the first experience of difficulty. Discouraged by their failure, they say they'd rather cheat than risk failing again.

There are also endless social-science studies showing the harmful effects of easy competition, not just on the psyche (精神)but more surprisingly on achievement. If children know they will get an award simply by showing up, what is the reason for improvement? Jean Twenge, writer of Generation Me, warns that when living rooms are filled with participation trophies, it's part of a larger cultural message: to succeed, you just have to show up. In college, those who've grown up receiving these endless awards do the required work, but don't see the need to do it well. In the office, they still believe that attendance is all it takes to get a promotion(晋升).

When I was a child, I earned my fair share of trophies but none of them was for just showing up. I also missed out on even more and had to watch my friends collect them while I stood by and clapped. I realized that in life, I'm going to lose more often than I win, even if I'm good at something, and I've got to get used to that to keep going.

When children make mistakes, our job should not be to turn those losses into decorated(装饰性的)victories. Instead, our job is to help kids overcome difficulties, to help them see that progress over time is more important than a certain win or loss, and to help them politely congratulate those who succeed when they fail. To do that, we need to refuse all the meaningless trophies.

42. The writer mentions Stanford University's study to show that

A. kids should be awarded for their special talents

B. necessary protection helps kids deal with failure

C. parents should try their best to keep kids out of competition

D. overpraise is likely to reduce kids' ability to face difficulties

43. The writer probably agrees that

A. attendance is the key to making progress

B. participation is more important than victory

C. getting awards easily stops kids from working hard

D. participation trophies give kids a sense of achievement

44. From his childhood experience, the writer has learned that

A. it's difficult to accept friends' victories

B. it's beneficial to learn from teammates

C. it's important to face winning or losing properly

D. it's necessary to be excellent at something to succeed

45. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. Participation Trophies: Do They Really Matter?

B. Participation Trophies: Why Are They Special?

C. Participation Trophies: How Do They Help Kids?

D. Participation Trophies: Who Should Award Them?
