Unit1 studying English

1.What do you think is the most important thing in the study of English: a good pronunciation, a good command of grammar, or a large vocabulary?

I think a large vocabulary is more important to me. V ocabulary is just like bricks in building a big house. We need to learn and know as many words as possible in order to read fluently. Moreover, remembering new words is time-consuming and hard for me. Sometimes I feel that my memory is so poor that I often forget more words than I've learned.

2. Among the four skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing, which one do you think is the most important for a non-English major student?

I think that among the four skills, reading is the most important for a non-English major student. According to some statistics, more than 90 percent of scientific papers are published in English in the world today. So if we have a good reading skill, at least we can read English to get information about science and technology. Besides, reading skill is the basis for the other three skills.

Unit2 fun with English

1. Have you ever observed how a child starts to learn to speak his / her mother tongue? What can you learn from the way a child learns to speak?

It is interesting to see how babies and young children learn to talk. They learn from people around them. They learn by repeating what they have heard. And they learn through trial and error. When they first say a word, use a phrase or make a sentence, they would most likely do it wrong. But they are not "afraid" of such errors. They would keep trying, making adjustments in the process, until they could make sense.

From the way a child learns to speak, I can learn a lot as far as language learning is concerned. One useful lesson, as I see it, is that, if you want to improve your English speaking skills, you should listen and observe carefully how other people, especially native speakers, speak English, and then open your mouth and do the same thing

2. Is there any difference between conversations in English and conversations in Chinese so far as safe topics, openings and endings are concerned?

This is a complicated question but the answer is yes. There certainly are some differences. As language is based on culture, if we learn more about the culture or cultures related to the English language, we will have a better understanding of safe topics, openings and endings for English conversations. Then, when we talk in English, we would know what topics are safe with what kind of people, and what is appropriate to say to start or end a conversation.

Our course book contains plenty of good examples. Here we can find very useful information about safe topics, and appropriate openings and endings for English conversations.

Unit3 school life

1. What do you like about your apartment / room?

My dormitory room faces south and has a lot of sunshine in fine weather. It also has a very good view of the garden in front of the building and the mountains in the distance. It makes me feel good when I look at the lovely grass, flowers and trees in the garden. The color of the mountains changes with different seasons and in different weather. I really enjoy watching the view from my room.

2. What do you dislike about your apartment / room?

What I dislike most about my room is that it is not big enough. The six of us share the 18-square-meter room. When everybody is in the room, there simply is not enough space for us to move around. And with six people in it, there isn't much privacy (隐私) for anyone.

3. What is your idea of an ideal apartment?

A good student apartment should have a relatively large living room and three or four small single bedrooms.

This design will provide enough space for meetings and gatherings while at the same time give each student his or her own room.

4. What kind of student accommodation does your college offer?

At my college/university, students have different types of accommodation depending on their status (身份). Undergraduate (大学本科的) students generally share dormitory rooms six to a room, master's students (硕士生) four to a room, and doctor's students (博士生) each have a room. New apartment houses are also available to students who pay an additional rent.

5. How do you apply for it?

All applications for accommodation on campus are handled by the university's housing office Students apply to that office for accommodation at the beginning of each school year.

Unit4 going to a party

1,What is small talk? Are you good at it?

Small talk is light conversation on unimportant or non-serious subjects. I used to think that small talk is useless and a waste of time, so I didn't learn how to handle small talk. Now I have a different view of small talk.

I find it quite useful for the purpose of conversation, especially in social gatherings. That's why I'm trying to improve my skill at small talk.

2. If you see somebody you really fancy, what would you do?

I would approach (接近) the person and try to start a conversation with him or her. I would introduce myself in a proper way and then try to find something of common interest to talk about. I guess that's how I make new acquaintances.

3. What makes a really good party?

A good party should be a gathering of friends and interesting people where everyone is nice to everyone else. There should be good conversations or good entertainment — music, dance, karaoke (卡拉OK), etc. Good food and drinks won't hurt. It would be even better if you have all of the above.

Unit5 telephone

1. How many kinds of phones are available today? What are they?

Today's telephones may be divided into two categories: fixed and mobile. Fixed phones are those installed (安装) at home, in the work place or in public places (pay phones). They are usually connected to a telephone line. Mobile phones include cellular phones or cell phones, car phones, phones installed on a plane, etc. They are not linked to a fixed phone line and, therefore, are wireless (无线的). Apart from (除去……之外) phones that transmit (传输) sound only, there are phones, both fixed and mobile, that transmit video signals (视频信号) along with sound. Such phones are called video phones.

2. What do "pager", "beeper", "cellular phone", "cell phone", "mobile phone" mean? Do you sometimes use them? How do they compare with the standard telephone?

A pager, or beeper, is a small electronic device that you carry or wear that makes a noise or shows a message to tell you that someone wants you to telephone them. A cellular phone, or cell phone for short, is a mobile phone that can be used anywhere you go as it operates by radio signals.

I have a pager. It helps me get messages. But it's only one-way communication. Compared to the mobile phones many of my friends and classmates are using, a pager looks rather out-dated. So I'm thinking of buying a mobile phone to keep up with the trend (潮流). A mobile phone is particularly useful to a student, you know. Unlike a standard telephone which you have to go to where it's installed to use, a mobile phone helps you stay in touch with your parents and friends wherever you are. Of course, you have to make sure the phone battery (电池) is okay.

3. What are good telephone manners?

To be brief, good telephone manners include answering calls promptly, speaking politely and clearly on the phone, listening attentively (专注地) and patiently, asking for, taking or giving messages appropriately, and hanging up lightly (轻轻地) and at the right time.

Unit6 shopping

1. Are you interested in name-brand products? Why or why not?

I'm interested in certain name brands and products under such brands. A name brand is usually a symbol of quality and value. Nike, Coca Cola and Motorola, to name a few, are such brand names. When you buy a product, you would want better quality and more value for your money. The easiest way to be sure you will have them is to choose a brand name.

2. Have you ever had / heard of an interesting / unpleasant shopping experience?

I don't do too much shopping. My mother is the chief shopper in my family and she knows how to bargain with different kinds of sellers. She often tells stories about how she compares different goods and prices, and eventually gets a good deal. My father, on the other hand, is a very careless shopper. He has quite a few experiences of being cheated by street peddlers. If you are interested and when you have time, I will tell you some of their shopping stories.

Unit7 a job interview

1. How can you handle both a part-time job and your schoolwork?

The key is to organize my time well. I will make careful plans for my schoolwork, my job and everything else I do. I will do one thing at a time and do it well in a most efficient manner. This way I will be able to meet the demand of my part-time job and to find sufficient time for my studies.

2. How would you try to impress your interviewer(s) during a job interview?

First of all, I would speak clearly and give a satisfying (令人满意的) answer to each of the questions asked by the interviewer(s).

Secondly, I would try to show my knowledge and experience that are needed for the job and point out my abilities and skills that would be useful in the job.

Lastly, I would emphasize (强调) my sense of responsibility and my willingness to learn whatever it takes to do a good job.

3. If you were an interviewer, what sort of job applicants would you prefer? Why?

Generally speaking, I would prefer a job applicant who is honest, intelligent and healthy, has relevant (有关的) training or experience, knows what is expected of him or her, and shows a willingness to work hard. Then, depending on the nature of the job, I would try to find out more about the applicant's ability and personality (性格) that would give me some idea if he or she is the right person for the job.

Unit8 employment

1. Do you think we should work to live or live to work? Give reasons.

I'm afraid that most of us probably must work to live when we are young. We must earn a living for ourselves and our family, as people are expected to be able to establish themselves at thirty However, when we reach a certain age (say 40), we may have fully established ourselves in the world with sufficient financial means Then, we may enter a stage when we live to work. We will probably be able to make a contribution (贡献) to our society, and in the process find real satisfaction from our work. So work will make our lives more meaningful.

2. Which is more important to you: a job with a high salary or a job with low stress?

If I had to choose between the two, I would go for a job with a high salary. The reason is: I am young and have a lot of energy; I'm willing to take challenge; and I'm confident I'll be able to handle stress that comes with a job.

A high salary, among other things, will give me a high quality of life.

3. Suppose a close member of your family has been laid off. What advice would you offer to him or her?

As a student, I'm probably not the best person to give advice. However, I would try to comfort him / her. I would tell him / her it's not the end of the world. I would do everything I can to make the experience less painful to him / her. I would help to find useful information on job openings or other ways of making a living, for example, to find some information on the Internet (互联网) because that would be less costly and may be more efficient.

Unit 9 Going on a vacation

1. If you've got a chance to travel abroad, would you go to Thailand? Why or why not?

Yes, I would certainly go. I like to travel and Thailand is a country I have always wanted to visit. I've heard a lot of good things about the country from my relatives who've been there and I've also seen it on TV and in movies. Thailand has a fascinating (迷人的) culture, very friendly people, beautiful beaches, impressive temples, and a colorful nightlife with all kinds of entertainment. Last but not least, at this point of time, it would be the most affordable (支付得起的) place abroad I could go to for a vacation.

2. Travelers are always discoverers. How true do you think this statement is?

I think it's very true. There's no question about it. Even without leaving where we live, we tend to find something new from time to time so long as we can see and hear. How can a traveler not discover something new if he or she is visiting a new place? As to what kinds of discovery a traveler makes, that would be a different story. People with different cultural backgrounds, education, experience and interest would surely make different kinds of discovery. We would understand this much better when we are traveling ourselves.

3. What significant role can traveling play in a person's life? (Can you imagine a life limited / rooted to one place only?)

Traveling is eye-opening and gives a person an opportunity to see new places, meet new people and learn about different cultures. It will make a person's life colorful and help the person understand the world better and become broader-minded. To me, a life limited to one place only is something regrettable

Unit13 1. Comment on the following statement: In pursuing a dream, one must keep a balance between one's strong wish for the dream to come true and realities of one's abilities and circumstances

It's very common that everyone has a dream and wishes the dream to come true. In order to realize a dream, you'll find it very useful to break a "big dream" down to some smaller plans and then work out each step to realize a plan. When you do this, you must take your own abilities and circumstances into consideration and try to match them with your steps and plans. When you have a good understanding of all factors (因素) and put them into a nice balance, you will certainly stand a better chance of succeeding in your plans and realizing your dreams.

2.What does the expression "the American Dream " mean?

We know that Americans value (珍视) the ability to start with a dream and then realize that dream through one's own efforts. I guess the American Dream would mean different things to different people. However, in most cases, the dream would be associated with success in one's life or career in the form of a better quality of life or a notable achievement. The efforts towards that end may include an education to improve oneself, hard work to earn money or set oneself up in the world. In a word, the American Dream is a person's hope to win a good life in America.

1.Is it possible for a woman to be a successful mother and have a successful professional career? Should society encourage or discourage women from combining the two? Yes, I think a woman can be a successful mother and have a successful professional career but it is a little difficult. Because women usually are the caregivers for husbands, children and, often, for ageing parents. And even in full-time employment, they are expected to continue to play this role. But I don’t think the two are conflicted. Society should encourage women from combining the two, because man and woman are equal. It is not just mothers’ obligation to care for the children. On the other hand, how difficult to find a job for a divorced woman in such a high-divorce society? Both men and women should learn to balance their work and family. 2. Should University students focus on their specialized areas or fundamental courses? I think university students should focus on their fundamental courses. Specialized areas are based on fundamental courses. For example, how can you build a tall building without a solid foundation? The same is true of learning. Usually the knowledge we learned in university are disjointed from development of society. So when we are applying for jobs after graduation, we may find the professional knowledge we have is out of date. It will be difficult to learn new things without a solid foundation. Despite all the apparent changes, what remains essentially the same are the fundamental courses. I believe fundamental courses are the roots of great innovation. 3.Should students choose their majors to meet their personal needs and interests or the need of society? I think students should choose majors to meet the need of society. Here are some reasons. First, from a personal perspective, the ultimate aim of going to college is to find a job and make money. So what we need to think about is how to meet the requirements of society and enterprises. Only in this way can we find a job easily so that we can realize our value. If we only consider personal needs and interests when choose majors, we are likely to fail to find a job after graduation.

What do you think is the most serious challenge of living in a big city? With the development of economy, the speed of urbanization of our country is faster and faster. The area of cities is larger and larger. More and more people crowd into cities, resulting in larger and larger population of citcities. The abundance of consumer goods in big city indeed bring us much convenience. However, there are also many challenges and pressures living in a big city. Such as crowded transport, dirty air, noisy street and so on. Among these challenges, I believe, the most serious one is the tense pace of life. To get enough consumer goods and live a happy life, We have to work every day to make money. We get up early in the morning and go to work in a hurry even no time to have breakfast. After a day,s busy work, we go home at night and go to sleep. We spend half of our time to work even forget to stop to enjoy our life. Sometimes I think that we are so stupid to devote ourselves to work and forget the purpose we work for. But most of time, we have to do so. So that is the reason for my view. Say something about the impact of horror films on young children. When it comes to horror films, opinions vary from person to person. It is the same to young children. I believe horror films have both positive and negative impact on young children, the point depend on the attitudes of children on horror films. Horror films indeed excite us greatly compared with other films. For children like horror films, watching horror films is an interesting adventure. Kids who always watch horror films would have more curiosity on the world and life. This results that children watching horror films have the spirit of exploration and innovation. However, for those timid and do not like horror films, watching horror films may make them have nightmares. What is worse, it may lead to psychological illness and make them more timid, resulting them afraid of trying unfamiliar things. So it is concluded that if children like horror films, they are admitted to watch them, if they do not like, do not force them to watch. What factors influence you most in your choice of a job? With the increasing of population of our country and the diversification of economy, it is becoming more and more difficult for our young to find a satisfactory job. Too many factors affect us to

谈吐3P原则 自我介绍时应该记住“3P原则”:Positive(自信),Personal(个性),Pertinent(中肯)。

Would you please say something about yourself,(请你谈谈自己的情况好吗,)应聘者则说:Do you want me to talk about my personal life or to say something about the job,(你想让我谈谈我个人的生活呢,还是与这份工作有关的问题,)这样,你的谈话就把面试人摆了进去。 I think your unit needs a man like me.(我想,贵单位需要象我这样的人才。) I’m qualified for the job because……(我能胜任这项工作,是因为……) I explored Shanghai market and sold 50,000 sets in one year.(我开发了上海市场,一年销售 出去5万套。) 3. I?d like to hear your opinion.(我很想听听你的意见。)
