Whether you admit it or not, music improves our daily life and makes us feel easy, especially the music of Beethoven(贝多芬), Mozart(莫扎特). But can you believe that a school in England is using classical music to cut down on(减少)students' bad behavior?

The head teacher Brian Walker at the West Park School in Derby asks some students to stay behind after school on Fridays. He forces his students to listen to Mozart and other classical(古典的)music. He also makes them copy(抄写)his favorite poems and they have to watch educational videos.

Mr. Walker says his main aim is to stop noisy pupils causing trouble in class for students who

want to study. He said the students staying behind were "not the smokers or drinkers, the truants (逃学的学生) or the people who are late for school... It's those who have slowed the learning and teaching in class for everyone". Mr. Walker said this was unacceptable, because it was making the rest of the students distract(转移)their attention on their study.

Mr. Walker believes what he does reminds students that education is something to value. "It helps them see they are part of something bigger that will improve their life chances," he said. The head teacher thinks students in fact learn from being kept behind after school. "Hopefully, I open their ears to an experience they don't normally have and...don't want to have again, so it's both educational and acts as a warning."

Music has had success elsewhere in reducing bad behavior. In 2004, it reduced crime(犯罪)on London's subway by 25 percent. Researchers from a Belfast university found it helped stop elephants' bad behavior.

However, one West Park student called Kieran said, "An hour of Mr. Walker's music is a real killer."

56. Mr. Walker asks his students to listen to music to _______________.

A. make them rest after a day's study

B. punish them for their bad behavior

C. get them to love arts gradually

D. reduce their bad behavior

57. A student who _____may be left behind to listen to Mozart after class.

A. plays truant

B. smokes in class

C. bothers(打扰)others in class

D. comes late for class

58. Why does Mr. Walker say some students' bad behavior is unacceptable?

A. Because the rest of the students hate them.

B. Because they are wasting their life.

C. Because they are disturbing teachers.

D. Because they have a bad influence on the other students.

59. In the eyes of Mr. Walker,_____.

A. some students don't realize education is valuable

B. all students can learn from music

C. music must be taught after class

D. students ought to love music

60. It can be inferred from the last two paragraphs that_____.

A. the action Mr. Walker takes doesn't really work as planned

B. Mr. Walker aims to tell students study is important

C. once music helped animals behave well

D. animals also like to listen to music

It was the end of my first day as a waitress in a busy New York restaurant. My cap had gone away, and my feet hurt. The loaded plates I carried seemed to be heavier and heavier. Tired and discouraged, I didn’t seem able to do anything right. As I made out a check for a family with several children who had changed their ice-cream order a dozen times, I was ready to stop. Then the father smiled at me as he handed me my tip. “Well done,” he said, “you’ve looked after us really well.” Suddenly my tiredness disappeared. I smiled back, and later, when the manager asked me how I’d liked my first day, I said, “Fine!” Those few words of praise had changed everything. Praise is like sunlight to human spirit; we cannot flower and grow without it. And yet, most of us are only too ready to apply to others the cold criticism, but are unwilling to give our fellows the warm sunshine of praise. Perhaps that is why one word of praise can bring such pleasure.

It’s strange how chary we are about praising. Perhaps i t’s because few of us know how to accept it. It’s especially rewarding to give praise in areas in which effort generally goes unnoticed. An artist gets admired for a glorious picture,a cook for a perfect meal. But do you ever tell your laundry manager how pleased you are when the shirts are done just right? In fact,to give praise costs the giver nothing but a moment’s thought and a moment’s effort.

60.Which of the following can’t describe the writer’s situation before she got her tip?

A.She was tired.B.She was busy.C.She was sorry.D.She was confident.62.According to the passage, which of the following is least likely to be given praise?

C.Be Generous to Give Others Praise! D.Don’t Criticize Others!

ScienceDaily (July 5, 2009) — Researchers from the University of Haifa-Oranim have managed to make out the "self-irrigating" mechanism(构造)of the desert rhubarb(沙漠大黄), which enables it to harvest 16 times the amount of water collected by other plants in the Negev Desert. This is the first example of a self-irrigating plant worldwide.

The desert rhubarb grows in the mountains of Israel's Negev desert, where average rainfall is particularly low (75 mm per year). Unlike most of the other desert plant species, which have small leaves so as to reduce water loss, this plant is unique in that its leaves are particularly large; each plant's rosette (莲座型丛叶)of one to four leaves reaches a total diameter(直径)of up to one meter.

Prof. Simcha Lev-Yadun, Prof. Gidi Ne'eman and Prof. Gadi Katzir came across this unique plant while studying the field area with students of the Department of Science Education-Biology of the University of Haifa-Oranim, and noticed that its waxy leaves are unusually large. They observed an exceptionally ridged(成脊状的)structure on each leaf.

The scientists explained that these deep and wide depressions(凹陷)in the leaves create a "channeling" mountain-like system by which the rain water is channeled toward the ground surrounding the plant's deep root. Other desert plants simply absorb the rain water that goes through the ground in its immediate surroundings.

The desert rhubarb is able to harvest quantities of water that are 16 times the amount of water harvested by the small-leafed plants of the Negev desert region. When the research team watered the plant artificially, they observed how the water flows along the course of the leave's depressions to the ground surrounding the plant's single root and then goes through the ground to a depth of 10 cm or more. Under the experimental conditions, water goes through the ground only as deep as 1 cm.

"We know of no other plant in the deserts of the world that functions in this manner," the researchers concluded.

65. The desert rhubarb’s "self-irrigating" mechanism_______.

A. enables it to survive with fewer leaves

B. works in many other desert plants in the world

C. helps it collect much more water than other plants

D. prevents the plant from losing water and heat

66. Which of the following helps other desert plants adapt to the dry climate?

A. Thin roots.

B. Small leaves.

C. Deep depressions.

D. The ridged structure.

67. Scientists discover the desert rhubarb can irrigate itself with its_______.

A. leaves

B. root

C. flowers

D. fruit

68. What is the best title for the passage?

A. How plants’ “self-irrigating” mechanism works

B. How plants growing in the desert survive

C. The desert plants growing in the Negev Desert

D. The world’s first “self-watering” plant discovered

BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhua)-Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has called for measures to boost (促进)pig farming as short supply has led to continued pork price hikes, causing concerns among consumers and the government over a possible spillover effect on inflation(通货膨胀).

Wen urged local government to leave no stone unturned in raising the enthusiasm of pig breeders when addressing an executive conference of the State Council on Wednesday.

The country’s pig production fell dramatically in recent months on pig breeders’ dampened enthusiasm due to rising feedstuff costs and low price in the past few years, and also the massive pig culling(淘汰)after the outbreak blue-ear disease in some regions.

The short supply of live pigs kept driving the pork price higher. The wholesale price of pork in June represented a 74.6-percent surge from the same month last year.

Wen said it’s of great importance to increase pig production, which would help stabilize the pork price and satisfy the meat demand of the public.

He called on local governments to deliver the subsides(补助金)for breeding female pig to farmers arranged by the central budget “as soon as possible”.

In order to strengthen disease control, Wen said immunization(免疫接种)against major pig epidemics shall be provided to farmers free of charge, and that subsidies shall be offered to farmers if their pigs have to be killed for disease control.

The premier said local administrative chiefs shall hold responsibility for pork supply in their areas, and that all unreasonable restrictions on pig farming shall be abolished.

Local governments shall also increase or pay allowances for lower-income families and college students to ensure their living standards are not adversely affected by the higher pork prices, Wen said.

69. At the conference Premier Wen Jiabao called on to______.

A. raise more pigs to stop pork price rise.

B. supply more pork to ease inflation.

C. show more concern for the consumers.

D. take measures to build more pig farms.

70. The underlined word “hikes” in the first paragraph means_____.

A. drops

B. rises

C. changes

D. delays

71. Which of the following groups is the reason for the pig production fall?

A. High feedstuff costs, high pork prices, massive pig killing

B. Pig disease breakouts, high pork prices, lower pig-raising enthusiasm

C. High feedstuff costs, low pork prices, massive pig killing

D. High feedstuff costs, low pork prices, pig disease breakouts

72. Before the problem is actually solved, Wen Jiabao hoped that the local government

should_______.

A. help to keep the living standards of some particular groups of people

B. do away with all the unreasonable restrictions on pig farming

C. lower the pork price by importing more pork from abroad

D. provide pig breeders with free immunization against big pig disease.

How I Turned to Be Optimistic(乐观的)

I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.

I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see-—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then.

The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to "the hard times."

My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.

From my experiences I have learned one important rule: almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.

A. She worked as a translator.

Dear Mom and Dad,

The annual college entrance examination is around the corner. On this special occasion, how I wish I could have a heart-to-heart talk with you.

Through those years of my growing up, I always feel grateful to you for your selfless help, care and love for me. Thanks to your constant encouragement, I have been making remarkable progress in my studies. It will be less than three months before I take the college entrance examination, which makes me under great pressure.

I need frequent support. You know, good conditions for learning and timely help will do me a lot of good.

Mom and Dad, my dream is the very one you always have. I am fully aware of the responsibilities I am bearing. I plan to make a detailed study schedule for this coming examination so that I can review lessons and practice solving problems of different subjects. It is also necessary that I do some physical training once in a while so that I can keep fit. If possible, as a family member, I will also help do some housework to make you relax a little bit.

I am quite confident of my future life and I do wish you good health and a happy life.

Yours ever,
