Get Started

·Sit in groups of three or fours and discuss the following questions.

1)Can you give some examples of what you can accomplish only through teamwork?

A case in point is a chorus. It won’t work if any member tries to stand out and show off his or her own voice, however beautiful it may be. Only when all the members of the chorus sing well and in harmony can the performance be a success. And the role of teamwork can be well illustrated by a sports team such as a basketball team or a football team. It takes the cooperation of the whole team to win a game. If the players do not cooperate with one another and perform to the best of their ability, the team is bound to lose the game even if it may have one or two super starts. Another typical example is the building of skyscraper. It is obvious that any individual alone cannot accomplish the task.

2)Do you enjoy working with others? Why or why not?

Some people do enjoy working with others, because if they work by themselves all the time, they may feel lonely, bored, weak and helpless, particularly when they cannot solve the problems. So they believe in the power of teamwork and enjoy working with others.

But others prefer to work by themselves. While successful teamwork can help us accomplish things that cannot be accomplished by individual effort, working with other people involves a lot of complexities. For example, the performance of the team may suffer when a member fails to play his or her part well. Some people are just not team players. And there is also the issue of interpersonal relationships among team members. So when working by yourself, if you are in complete control of your work, there might be no need for you to adapt your working style to other’s.

3)Have you ever had any experience of successful cooperation with others? Describe it briefly.

4)What should you keep in mind if you want to work well with others?

The answer may vary, too. Possible answers may include:

If I want to work well with others, I should

·ensure that my own objectives are in lines with my team.

·follow the regulations and rule that are necessary to the accomplishment of the team’s goals;

·be friendly with my team members and try to create a friendly working atmosphere;

·communicate clearly, honestly and effectively with my team members.

·Be a team player.

If you really wish to succeed in life, it is very important to be a team player. For example, in a basketball game, Michael Jordan is a great player, but he still has to cooperate well with his team members to win a game, because every member of his team has a very specific role and every member of the team is vital to the success of the team. If one player does not play well, the team will lose the game.

Of course, the concept of teamwork applies to more than just sports. In the workplace and in school, working together is also an important element for success. In the workplace, it is important to be thought as a team player, for no one person can build a railroad or manage an airline. In today’s world most companies are using team concepts to run their business.

Success in college can also depend on teamwork. Lab work and group projects are just some of the experiences requiring good cooperation with others.

Human beings are social creatures. Like it or not, we are all team players.

----A leader plays a vital role in a team. People are willing to join the team because they are attracted by the leader. Meanwhile, only a good leader can hold people together and make them work well to their best ability.

Another good example to illustrate the roles of team players is the function of a computer. The monitor, the CPU, the hard drivers, the keyboard, etc., all play a role in making the computer work. Whenever there is a fault with any of the component parts, the computer will not work as efficiently, or even simply stop working.

A colony of ants provides a perfect example of teamwork. Each ant colony has at least one or more queens. The job of the queen is to lay eggs which the worker ants look after. Worker ants look after food, look after the young, and defend the nest from unwanted visitors. Some worker ants are given the job of cleaning the nest and

keeping it tidy.

Q: Do you think some members perform duties that are more important than others in the same team?

No. Take for example a ball game: without the support of the defense players, no single striker can score a goal; without the doctors, players that have been hurt in the game might not get back to the field again.

No. Again, take an ant colony for example. Without the queen, no eggs would produced. Without the care of the worker ants, the young or even the queen will die. In either case, the colony will suffer.

Corporate culture, or organizational culture, comprises the attitudes, experiences, beliefs and values of an organization. Every organization has its own unique culture or value set. Most organizations don’t consciously try to create a certain culture. The culture of the organization is typically created unconsciously, based on the value of the top management or the founders of an organization.

You must not have and ideas of your own.

You should always agree with the rest of the team.

If one’s ideas are not accepted by the team, he or she should not take it as a sign of personal rejection. He or she should not lose heart.

Very happy.
