Age has never been an obstacle for 16-year-old Thessalonika Arzu-Embry. After all, she’s

already got her master’s degree.

The North Chicago-area teen started homeschooling at the age of 4. She began having an

influence on others soon after. When she was 6 years old, she was an inspirational

speaker at an

organization called Tabitha House Community Service, transitional housing for people who

were forced to leave their homes due to various situations such as natural disasters, abuse and

violence.

At the age of 11, she graduated from high school and then earned her bachelor’s degree

in psychology in 2013. She completed those classes online as she was traveling for church

events and leadership meetings. Now armed with her master’s degree, Thessalonika hopes to

help businessmen learn how to prepare for upcoming trends and changes.

She doesn’t sto p there, though. The teen plans on focusing on aviation(航空) psychology

for her doctoral studies, a decision inspired by her father who was a private pilot and an

experienced soldier and now is a manager at O’Hare International Airport. She grew up around

airplanes and took flights all the tim e.

What exactly can Thessalonika do with aviation psychology? Her goal is to use it to

determine whether pilots are dealing with issue that could have deadly results once the plane

takes off--- a topic that has been in the news lately. For her, it’s a mix of two of her interests:

business and psych ology.

In her free time, Thessalonika enjoys playing tennis, swimming and being active in her

youth group at church. She also has three self-published books, which are available on her site,

That food is expensive doesn’t mean you can’t take steps to keep the cost under control. Even relatively small steps, like planning out your meals for the week to avoid last-minute takeout orders, can go a long way toward reducing your food expenditures(开支). Here are some ways to cut your food spending.

1. Buy in bulk.

You can often get a better deal if you buy more than one item at once at the grocery store,

and this is especially true if you shop at warehouse membership stores like Sam’s Club and Costco. While you pay a membership fee, you can have deep discounts when you stock up on pasta, sauce or cereal. The same strategy can be applied to online purchases with retailers like Amazon, which can sell grocery items. If you know your family goes through three boxes of cereal a month, for example, you can opt for the “Subscribe & Save” Amazon option to reduce your costs.

2. Compare prices.

Taking the time to make apple-to apples comparisons by looking at the price per unit can

help prevent unpleasant surprises at the checkout counter. Fancy packaging and design can make it hard to tell how much the item that you are taking is, so take a look at the small print or tag on the store shelf to see exactly what you are paying for. You might decide to opt for the cheaper off-brand item if the price is much lower.

3. Organize your recipes(菜谱).

If there are a few dishes your family regularly enjoys, then keep them organized in a recipe

book so that you can more easily plan out meals for the week and make your shopping list. As an added bonus, writing down your recipes and keeping them organized

make it easy for children to take on cooking responsibilities as they get older. Planning out meals like this also makes it easier to use substitutions(代替物) and repurpose ingredients for another night. For example, if you cook a roast chicken one night, you can use the leftovers as toppings on homemade pizza next night.

4. Minimize meat consumption.

Meat tends to be the most expensive part of a meal, so skipping it can generate big savings.

That doesn’t mean doing without protein, though. Eggs and beans make great substitutes, and they are much more affordable.

41. In which way can you get a pleasant discount when buying in bulk?

A. Purchasing an off-brand item.

B. Being a member of an online retailer.

C. Using substitutions and repurpose ingredients.

D. Signing up for a discount campaign ahead of time.

42. The underlined phrase “opt for” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “_____”.

A. buy

B. discount

C. choose

D. pay

43. Why can organized recipes be written down as a bonus?

A. They can save food over night.

B. They can be used to make leftovers.

C. They can help store extra foods efficiently.

D. They can equip children when they are older.

44. To save a large sum of money, whi ch should be less consumed?

A. Cereal.

B. Eggs.

C. Meat.

D. Beans.

45. What is the main idea of this passage?

A. To persuade us to bargain when shopping.

B. To encourage us to consume cheap foods.

C. To recommend measures to plan a food budget.

D. To introduce ways to decrease food consumption.

C

We all know what it is like to be unable to turn your head because of a cold in the muscles of your neck, or because an unexpected twist has made your neck ache. The slightest move makes you jump with pain. Nothing could be worse than a pain in the neck.

That is why we use the phrase to describe some people who give you the same feeling. We have all met such people.

One is the man who always seems to be clapping his hands—often at the wrong time—during a performance in the theater. He keeps you from hearing the actors.

Even worse are those who can never arrive before the curtain goes up and the

play begins. They come hurrying down to your row of seats. You are comfortably settled down, with your hat and heavy coat i n your lap. You must stand up to let them pass. You are proud of yourself-control after they have settled into their seats…Well, what now…God, one of them is up again. He forgot to go to the men’s room, and once more you have to stand up, hanging on to your hat and coat to let him pass. Now, that is “a pain in the neck”.

Another, well—known to us all, is the person sitting behind you in the movies. His mouth is full of popcorn; he is chewing loudly, or talking between bites to friends next to him. None of them remain still. Up and down, back and forth, they go for another bag of popcorn, or something to drink.

Then, there is the man sitting next to you at lunch, smoking. He wants you to enjoy it too, and blows smoke across your food into your mouth.

We can not forget the man who comes into a bus or subway and sits down next to you, just as close as you will let him. You are reading the newspaper and he gets closer so that he can read the pap er with you. He may even turn the paper to the next page before you are ready for it.

We also call such a person a “rubber neck”, always getting close to where it does not belong, like neighbors who watch all your visitors. They enjoy learning about your personal business. People have a strong dislike for “rubber necks”. They hate being watched secretly.

46. Where can you find this passage?

A. In a medicine dictionary.

B. in a kids’ story book.

C. In a social science book.

D. In a science textbook.

47. According to the passage, how do you feel when late comers walk back and forth

in front of you in a cinema?

A.Ignored

B. Tired

C. Disturbed

D.

Relaxed

48. A “rubber neck” often __________.

A. says bad words behind people

B. asks about other people’ s

business

C. bargains with salespeople over the price

D. quarrels face to face with

neighbors

48. Which of the following persons CANNOT be described as a “pain in the neck”?

A. Someone who often claps at the wrong time during a performance.

B. Someone who feels ache in his neck due to a cold in the muscles.

C. Someone who sits next to you smoking, which you never enjoy.

D. Someone who keeps eating or talking all through the movies.

50. What is the main purpose of the author?

A. To tell people what might be bad manners in public.

B. To criticize the people who might be a “pain in the neck”.

C. To show anger to those who are described as a “pain in the neck”.

D. To tell people how to stop the pain in the neck.

D

Students and many parents have all sorts of reasons to hate testing, whether it’s a classroom quiz or a graduate school exam. After all, exams can expose cheating, waste, valuable instructional time and influence the curriculum.

But tests also play a key role in education. In fact, assessments can often work to improve teaching and learning. As a growing number of experts have argued, schools and districts should do more to support better testing practices and programs that stick to the new standards.

In recent years, there’s been a lot of research showing that quizzes can boost students’ outcomes. As writer Annie Murphy Paul argued in the new York Times, test-based approaches to learning appear to be particularly important for individuals from low-income backgrounds. In fact, classes with more quizzes have reduced by 50 percent of the achievement gap between more rich and less rich students.

The regular use of assessments makes students pay more attention and the classroom seems a lot more interesting to the students. Testing also gives both teachers and students more real-time information on how much people are actually learning in class. Constant assessments let teachers know where students are in their understanding, so they know where to go next with instruction. In other words, assessments serve as a check on school systems and help ensure that all students, regardless of family background, are learning.

There are certainly issues with tests. For a long time, many schools relies on weak assessments that did not measure richer thinking skills like critical thinking or problem solving, and the tests often didn’t fully measure what teachers actually taught in the classroom. Therefore, educators also need more training and access to good testing practices and programs.

It is obvious that regular tests help create a classroom culture that is focused on learning and on creating rules that support robust(健全的) educational practices.

51. Although students and parents have many reasons to hate testing, they ignore

that _______.

A. students tend to cheat in tests

B. tests are a waste of learning time

C. tests matter in teaching and learning

D. students think tests outweigh the curriculum

52. What idea is consistent with that of Annie Murphy Paul?

A. Rich students have special rights to escape tests.

B. Poor students have difficulty reaching their achievements.

C. Students from poor families make great progress by taking a test.

D. There is no achievement gap between more rich and less rich students.

53. What is the basic function of an assessment?

A. It makes sure that all students concentrate on learning.

B. It makes teachers kno w who does well in his subject.

C. It shows how many students are actually learning in class.

D. It judges whether students concentrate on their study.

54. Who may fail to present their talent in the traditional assessment?

A. The students with critical thinking.

B. The students with low-income background.

C. The students without interest in their study.

D. The students with poor academic performance.

55. Which is the best title of the passage?

A. Cut off tests.

B. Don’t hate tests.

C. Issues with tests.

D. Improve testing programs

My father was found to have developed hepatic(肝的) cancer in November, 2014.

My

older brother, Jared, suggested donating part of his liver to save our father’s life. Many people don’t realize that, unlike other organs, the liver can grow back to full size within six months. Dad was grateful but very cautious. He’s a doctor, and although he was aware of the success rate of these operations, it was hard for him to accept such an offer from his children.

When one adult donates to another adult, they have to give a larger portion of their liver than if donating to a child, so the risks are greater. But Dad has a rare blood group, and the chances of a donation from a dead body were low. Jared and I had tests and found that, against all odds, we were both compatible(兼容的). After that, we didn’t give him any choice.

Later it was found that 66% of Jared’s liver would be needed. At between 60% and 70%, the risk to the donor increases sharply; the surgeons were unwilling to consider hi m. I stepped forward straight away. I had the tests and discovered they’d only have to take 56% of my liver.

Once I was cleared to have the operation, a date came through very quickly--- just a fortnight later. Dad and I arrived at the hospital the night before. I remember the very nervous conversation we had, with him thanking me over and over.

The operation went very well. Both Dad and I recovered quickly. Six months on, other than the scar on my chest, I am almost back to my old self and planning an assault on Kilimanjaro to raise money for the British Liver Trust. Dad still has hepatitis(肝炎),but with his healthy new liver, we have been told he can live at least another five years --- we are confident he will last a lot longer.
