The Report on A Christmas Carol

English 0903 Jane

A Christmas Carol is one of the best-known works of Charles Dickens, who is a Criticism writer in the 19th century. His works mainly reflect the reality and A Christmas Carol, with no exception, mirrors westerners' lives on Christmas.

The novel tells an old man who regards money as his own life---Ebenezer Scrooge. Even on Christmas Eve, when the family gets together and people bless each other, he is still quite mean to everybody. It is not until three ghosts' coming to reveal his childhood, present and future that he realizes how important to be good to others and what Christmas means. The ghosts of the past, present and future visit Scrooge and help him see how his behaviour has impacted on his life, and the way that he is treated by other people as a consequence. At the end of the novel, Scrooge is no longer the one he has been.

From the novel I've learned what the inherent meaning of Christmas is, which results in my thinking about how to treat others.

Christmas is to western countries what Spring Festival is to China. Although both festivals are designed to celebrating the coming year, they have their distinctive characters. I used to assume that Christmas is merely about Santa Claus, gifts, or big meal. Now I have realized Christmas is also the time to put away one's hatred and to treat others well sincerely. For instance, Bob, Scrooge's clerk, toasts the longevity and health of Scrooge though Scrooge gives him so little money that he can hardly make ends meet. Bob and his families live in poverty; however, they know gratitude and amicability. Hence they lead a full-of-laughter life. In contrast, wealthy as he is, Scrooge is as dismal as the dark night. To be friendly——a spirit of Christmas——is one of the differences between Christmas and Spring Festival. Nowadays an increasing number of young Chinese have been taking a fancy to Christmas as if it were a most fashionable symbol. But how many of them recognize what Christmas means indeed? I think there is no point in celebrating Christmas without knowing the Christmas culture.

As for the protagonist, Scrooge, he is a representative of those who go to extreme to earn money so that he ignores love-----love for friends, for soul mate, and for people in need. To some extend, Scrooge is lucky in that he meets three ghosts and avoids ending up in being a wandering ghost like his partner, Marley.

Scrooge finally becomes a man with great heart. Whereas, there are still Scrooges in our present society. Especially in China, the richer they are, the more reluctant they are when it comes to doing charity. Although it is not obligatory for the rich to donate money, the world needs all people's love, no matter who you are. Last but not the least, happiness does not lie in what you have gained but what you have dedicated.

To sum up, A Christmas Carol rethinks the relationship among people, convincing readers that human beings should be kind to each other.

hamlet book review

Hamlet and Two Heroines Hamlet is one of the most famous play that written by William Shakespeare. It is the tragedy of tragedies. This is a story about revenging ending in perishing together. After reading through the whole play, two heroines, Gertrude and Ophelia, impress me most. In Middle Ages, women were considered as appendages of men, so were Gertrude and Ophelia. They both have close bound with Hamlet, the hero, and love him deeply. However, does Hamlet love them as much as they do? It confuses me a lot. “Are you honest? Are you fair?” In front of Ophelia’s tomb, Hamlet declares that “What is he whose grief Bears such an emphasis? Whose phrase of sorrow Conjures the wand’ ring stars, and makes them stand Like wonder-wounded hearers? This is I, Hamlet the Dane”, and “I loved Ophelia, forty thousand brothers Could not with all their quantity of love Make up my sum. What wilt thou do for her?” Those words are aimed at refuting Laertes’s denouncement. It is more of a riposte than expression of love. Leartes imputes Ophelia’s death to Hamlet, exploding his grief with exaggerated tone. As soon as Hamlet hears his denouncement, he steps forward and wants to Prove that his is much more distressed than Leartes. I first recognize Hamlet and Ophelia’s relationship from the conversation among Ophelia, her brother and her father. She believes that Hamlet loves her sincerely, but she was satirized by his father, Polonius. Then she follows Polonius’s advice, rejecting Hamlet’s letters and not meeting with him, which makes a breakthrough of their relationship. It seems that Hamlet becomes insane. In order to test his insanity, Ophelia recites what her father tells her, that makes Hamlet crazier. The death of Ophelia is a tragedy. The causes of her death include several reasons. First, Hamlet becomes “insane”and “breaks faith”. What’s worse, her father is killed and the murderer is Hamlet. What kind of affection dose Hamlet hold to Ophelia? Apparently, his love is neither a brain storm nor as much as “forty thousand brothers”. Hamlet cannot consider Ophelia as a companion and he hesitates to trust her. He loves her beauty and purity, but he cannot share his very secret with her and earn her support. What’s worse, the secret told by ghost makes mother’s image ruined. As far as he considers, Ophelia’s present beauty is not a promise to future chastity. What makes him upset is his uncertainty in his inside world. A critic commented Hamlet as “the giant of thoughts, the dwarf of actions”. He has no strong motion disclosure to Ophelia. As Hamlet describes, women are flirtations and weak-minded, which become women’s sin. While, beauty makes women easier to be tempted, so beauty becomes sin. “Frailty, thy name is woman!” When Hamlet is alone, he seldom thinks of Ophelia, but frequently thinks of his mother Gertrude. However, it is not a son’s attachment and love to mother, instead, it represents anger and hate. Certainly, it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t love his mother at all. It is more like a sense of stigma.

A Chistmas Carol Book Report

A Christmas Carol Book Report Recently, I read the British famous novel A Christmas Carol, which is written by Charles Dickens. And I think it is very meaningful, I like it very much. A Christmas Carol give me deep revelation in many ways. And it also let me think more about life, love and social life. Below is my own feeling after reading A Christmas Carol. A Christmas Carol’s author Charles Dickens is a famous writer in British literature history. He is born in 1812, died in 1870. The only education he received was two years of schooling. At the age of 12, he had to work as a worker and then became a reporter for a newspaper. In 1837, his novel made him the most famous of his time in England. The popularity of Dicken’s novels and short stories has meant that not one has ever gone out of print. Ddickens wrote serialized novels, the usual format for fiction at the time, and each new part of his stories was eagerly anticipated by the reading public. A Christmas Carol represents a story happened in a Christmas dream. The main character didn’t believe in Christmas and was selfish and cruel to other people. However, after the tree ghosts came and brought him to the past, present and the future, he

On the contrary, we can also say that Hamlet is rude and selfish for he did not think twice before his revenge . if (Capitalize If since it is the beginning word of the sentence.)a country has no king, how can a country keep alive (You need a question mark here since it is a question.)So, every thing has two sides, the bright side and adumbral side. Every time we make a decision we have to think twice. Be careful with your spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Too many uncessary mistakes. It is good that you looked at both the dark and bright sides of Hamlet. Thats quite objective and convincing . Hamlet of Shakespear is a classical representative work. However, these experiences enriched his life, at the same time, supporting many writing materials for his writing. He wrote more than 20 novels in all, reflecting the hate to the money and the sympathy to the common people. His works, such as Great Expectations, a Tale 0f Tw0 Cities, were affected by many readers. This novel told a people who regard money as important as his own life---Scrooge. Even on Christmas Eve, he was also quite mean to everybody. There are five chapters in all. Chapter 1 introduced scrooge’s character and Marley, his friend’s ghost.
