Passage Two

The part of the environmental movement that draws my firm's attention is the design of cities. buildings and products. When we designed America's first so-called "green" office building in New York two decades 1, we felt very alone. But today, thousands of people come to green building conferences, and the 2 that buildings can be good for people and the environment will be increasingly influential in years to 3 .

Back in 1984 we discovered that most manufactured products for decoration weren't designed for 4 use. The "energy-efficient" sealed commercial buildings constructed after the 1970s energy crisis 5 indoor air quality problems caused by materials such as paint, wall covering and carpet. So far 20 years. we've been focusing on these materials 6 to the molecules, looking for ways to make them 7 for people and the planet.

Home builders can now use materials-such as paints that release significantly _8_ amounts of organic compounds -that don't 9 the quality of the air, water, or soil. Ultimately. 10_, our basic design strategy is focused not simply on being "less bad" but on creating 11 healthful materials that can be either safely returned to the soil _12_ reused by industry again and again. As a matter of _13, the world's largest carpet manufacturer has already _14_" a carpet that is fully and safely recyclable (可循环用的).

Look at it this way: No one __15 out to create a building that destroys the planet. But our current industrial systems are 16 causing these conditions, whether we like it or not. So 17_ of simply trying to reduce the damage, we are _18_ a positive approach. We're giving people high-quality, healthful products and an opportunity to make choices that have a 19 effect on the world. It's not just the building industry, either. 20_ cities are taking these environmentally positive approaches to design, planning and building. Portland, Seattle and Boston have said they want to be green cities. Chicago wants to be the greenest city in the world.

Passage One

Having returned from her round trip, the angry woman stood outside the ticket office, speaking to a young man working at the office. “You sold me a ticket for May 22nd, but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost £12.”

Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office, Madam,” he said politely. “I?ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.”

The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered there was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn?t have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look sunburned,” he said to her. “Did you have a nice time in Jersey?”

“Yes,” she answered shyly. “The beach was lovely. And I can swim, too!”

“That?s fine,” said Harry. “My little girl can?t swim a bit yet. Of course, she?s only three.”

“I?m four,” the child said proudly. “I?ll be four and a half.”

Harry returned to the mother. “I remember your ticket, Madam,” he said. “But you didn?t get one for your daughter, did you?”

Passage Two

Accidents are cause: they don?t just happen. The reason may be easy to see: an overloaded tray, a shelf out of reach, a patch of ice on the road. But more often than not there is a chain of events leading up to the misfortune —frustration, tiredness or just bad temper —that show what the accident really is, a sort of attack on oneself.

Road accidents, for example, happen frequently after a family quarrel and we all know people who are accident-prone (易于…的), so often at odds with themselves and the world that they seem to cause accidents for themselves and others.

By definition, and accident is something you cannot predict or avoid, and the idea which used to be current, that the majority of road accidents are caused by a minority of criminally careless drivers, is not supported by insurance statistics. These show that most accidents involve ordinary motorists in a moment of carelessness or thoughtlessness.

It is not always clear, either, what sort of conditions make people more likely to have an accident. For instance, the law requires all factories to take safety precautions and most companies have safety committees to make sure the regulations are observed, but still, every day in Britain, some fifty thousand men and women are absent from work due to an accident. These accidents are largely the result of human error or misjudgment —noise and fatigue, boredom or worry are possible factors which contribute to this. Doctors who work in factories have found that those who drink too much, usually people who have a high anxiety level, run three times the normal risk of accidents at work.

Napoleon,as a chara cter in Tolstoy?s War and Peace ,is more than once described as having “fat little hands.” Nor does he “sit well or firmly on the horse.”He is said to be “undersized,” with “short legs” and a “round stomach”. The issue here is not the accuracy of Tolstoy?s description—it seems not that far off from historical accounts —but his choice of facts : other things that could be said of the man are not said. We are meant to understand the difference of a warring commander in the body of a fat little Frenchman. Tols toy?s Napoleon could be any man wandering in the streets and putting a little of powdered tobacco up his nose—and that is the point.

It is a way the novelist uses to show the moral nature of a character. And it turns out that, as Tolstoy has it, Napoleon is a crazy man. In a scene in Book Three of War and Peace, the wars having reached the critical year of 1812, Napoleon receives a representative from the Tsar(沙皇, who has come with peace terms. Napoleon is very angry: doesn’t he have more army? He, not the Tsar, is the one to make the terms. He will destroy all of Europe if his army is stopped. “That is what you will have gained by e ngaging me in the war!” he shouts. And then, Tolstoy writes, Napoleon “walked silently several times up and down the room, his fat shoulders moving quickly.”

Still later, after reviewing his army amid cheering crowds, Napoleon invites the shaken Russian to dinner. “He raised his hand to the Russian?s…face,” Tolstoy writes, and “taking him by the ear pulled it gently…” To have one?s ear pulled by the Emperor was considered the greatest honor and mark of favor at the French court .“Well, well, why don?t you say anything? ” said he, as if it was ridiculous in his presence to respect any one but himself, Napoleon.

Tolstoy did his research, but the composition is his own.

Passage Five

When it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness, who possess wings of their own and who will fly with me. I seek friends whose qualities illuminate me and train me up for love. It is for these people that I reserve the glowing hours, too good not to share.

When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and“too serious” about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say:“Let?s start with a train whistle today.”We would s it quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changed into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped.

When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend. He was in despair and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We gave London to each other.

For almost four years I have had a remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way , in the other?s dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind. In my most interesting moments, I often think:“Yes, I must tell...”We have never met.

It is such comforting companions I wish to keep . One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist, who will only fill up the healing silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.

Passage Six

For a while, my neighborhood was taken over by an army of joggers. They were there all the time: early morning, noon, and evenings. There were little old ladies in gray sweats, young couples in Adidas shoes, middle-aged men with red faces. “Come on!” My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening.“You?ll feel great.”

Well, I had nothing against feeling great and if Alex could jog every day, anyone could. So I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more. Based on my experience, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around, and judging from the number of the people who left our neighborhood jogging army, I?m not alone in my opinion.

First of all , jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet take a real pounding running down a road for two or three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack while jogging, and I had something else to worry about. Jogging doesn?t kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out, as they did with me.

Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for forty-five minutes isn?t my idea of fun. Jogging is also a lonely pastime. Some joggers asy,“I love being out there with just m y thoughts.”Well , my thoughts began to bore me, and most of them were on how much my legs hurt.

And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain? And that wasn?t just the first week; it was practically every day for two months. I never got past the pa in level, and pain isn?t fun. What a cruel way to do it! So many other exercises including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly, so why jog?

I don?t jop any more, and I don?t think I ever will. I?m walking two miles three times a week at a f ast pace, and that feels good. I bicycle to work when the weather is good. I?m getting exercise, and I?m enjoying it at the same time. I could never say the same for jogging, and I?ve found a lot of better ways to stay in shape.

26. From the first paragrap h, we learn that in the writer?s neighborhood_________.
