The UNLV Department of Dance baccalaureate degrees (BFA- Professional degree in Performance and Choreography and BA- Dance Production and Management) allows students to pursue the study of dance in a liberal arts curriculum, which focuses on artistic, creative, technical, and theoretical education. The curriculum offers strong broad based training that can be supplemented with additional departmental, college and university electives.

Dance as a collaborative art requires hard work with long hours and a need for dedication. Professional training goes beyond the classroom; performances, production work and extra opportunities are vital to the development of a dance artist. The curriculum provides a technical and theoretical foundation.

These guidelines will help facilitate the student’s career within the department. They do not contradict or override UNLV student conduct policies. To obtain UNLV policies please contact the Office of Student Conduct.

ETIQUETTE IN CLASS AND REHEARSAL

Students are expected to act professionally and responsibly with respect to the faculty, guest artists, staff, facilities and other students. There should be no talking in classes unless this is a part of the classroom discussion. UNLV requires punctuality and preparedness in all classes. For dance technique classes and rehearsals this includes proper dress and warm up.

[insert policy for absense etc.]

The instructor should be made aware if there is a need to leave a class or rehearsal. Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off. If there is an emergency that requires access to a phone, please solicit permission from the instructor before the beginning of class/rehearsal. If you have an extenuating circumstance that causes tardiness or the need to leave class early or miss class altogether, the student must inform the instructor as soon as possible. Auditions, personal schedules, employment are not valid excused absences

There is a no smoking, eating, or drinking allowed in the dance studios [except for water]. It is your responsibility to clean up after yourself. This includes the disposal of all water bottles, tape, band-aides, hair ties and other trash.

Attendance at rehearsals is mandatory. Missed rehearsals may result in possible removal from the concert and will jeopardize your performance grade. It is also proper

etiquette to acknowledge the instructor and dance musician(s) after class/rehearsal is finished.

DRESS CODE

Proper dress is vital in a training environment. It allows the instructor to see the definition of the line of the body to make sure placement is correct. Appropriate clothing is a requirement and failure to adhere to policy will affect your grade.

Hair must be pulled back and secured against the head.

For Ballet:

Women: black leotards, pink or nude tights, ballet slippers.

Men: black tights, white tank top, dance belt, and ballet slippers

For modern/jazz classes: Women: dark solid color dancewear. Instructors will specify specific dress preferences.

Instructors are not held to the above dress code.

PRODUCTION ETIQUETTE

Every dance major is required to work a total of four production hours on load-in days for each departmental concert. There will be a sign up sheet outside the main dance office on the student information bulletin board to schedule your load in time. Failure to do so will result in your non-participation in the next semester’s departmental productions. You are only excused from dance major technique classes between 10am and 1pm during performance week for the purpose of load-in. The production skills you learn are part of your education. Be on time and dressed appropriately for load-in: no open-toed shoes, or dresses, or skirts.

All students in a show are required to strike after the final performance. Failure to do so will result in your non-participation in any departmental production the following semester.

The following must be observed in the theater or performance space:

?Keep quiet back stage

?Warm ups are mandatory!!!

?There will be no shouting, applauding, or “cat calling” from backstage.

?Keep all theatre and dressing areas clean and neat.

?No eating, drinking, or smoking in costume.

?No one may enter the audience or lobby in costume.

?Costumes must be neatly hung up at the end of each performance.

?No unauthorized individuals are allowed backstage or in dressing rooms

Each student must represent UNLV responsibly. When touring the student will be excused from departmental classes. It is the students responsibility make arrangements with non-departmental instructors. Excusal letters will be made available. The student is responsible for missed work.

PROTOCAL FOR STUDENT GRIEVANCES

According to the UNLV code there is a proper protocol to follow if a student is having a problem with an instructor. Following this protocol is important and failing to do so can hurt your case. First, a student must inform the instructor about the problem. It is a good idea to document this first meeting. Second, if the problem is not resolved, a meeting should be set up with the departmental chair. A student may ask that a third party be present to mediate the discussion. Third, if there is no resolution in the second procedure, the issue may be taken to the dean’s offic e or to the faculty senate. However, every attempt should be fairly made to address the issue before proceeding higher.

Note that the UNLV code does give an instructor the right to remove a disruptive student from class

BFA- Bachelor of Fine Arts, Performance and Choreography

The BFA is a specialized degree that prepares students for a professional career in dance performance. Students cannot declare themselves a BFA major until they have formally auditioned for the BFA and have been accepted to that major by the departmental faculty at the end of the freshman year. Only those students, who show potential for a professional performance career, including a professional work ethic and etiquette, will be allowed into the BFA. A student must maintain a minimum of a 2.75 over all GPA and a 3.0 GPA in departmental courses. Failure to meet the GPA requirements will result in the inability to perform in all departmental productions the following semester. If the GPA is not met a second semester the student will be removed from the BFA Program. Only BFA students are permitted to perform in faculty and guest artist concerts. If a student is not accepted to the BFA, they will be instructed as to their deficiencies and will be allowed to re-audition the following year. Until acceptance, all students are enrolled in the BA program in dance production.

BA- Bachelors of Art, Dance Production and Management

UNLV is pleased to offer what we believe to be the only degree in the US that specializes in dance production and design. This degree offers a student the opportunity to continue their love for the dance while developing skills to work behind the scenes with a professional dance company or production, become a company founder, or operate administratively for a dance conservatory, academy, educational institution or administrator of a local dance school. The combination of technique classes, choreography, design, technical production, video, and music theory makes this a degree that will make the transition from undergraduate to graduate study or the transition to a

professional career easy and fulfilling. A student must maintain a minimum of a 2.75 over all GPA and a 3.0 GPA in departmental courses. Failure to meet the GPA requirements will result in the inability to take part in all departmental productions the following semester. If the GPA is not met a second semester the student will be put on academic probation and may face termination as a dance major. BA students will be required to work on departmental productions and are not eligible to perform in any faculty or guest artist concert.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND TESTING PROCEDURES

BETH AND VICTORIA I’D LIKE TO SET A DEPARTMENTAL POLICY ON ABSENCES HERE WHAT DO YOU THINK??????? We should discuss with the faculty on Tuesday and have the same policy for both technique and theory classes because it gets confusing.

Please read your course syllabus for ALL CLASSES carefully after the first class to make sure you can fulfill all class requirements. If you have any problems, see the instructor immediately.

PRODUCTION CLASSES ARE DEMANDING ON TIME!There are requirements in all production classes to be part of departmental shows. Please see your class syllabus for exact details. ALL DANCE MAJORS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE DAN 367, production. It is an important part of your training. When enrolled in this course you are not eligible to perform in any department production but are required to work back stage on a departmental show.

All testing procedures should be discussed with your individual instructors.

The week before finals weeks, the UNLV Department of Dance suspends technique classes and all students go through juries and placement tests in front of a panel of technique teachers. The technique level placement for the following year is reviewed at this time. Juries are standard testing procedures in most university and conservatory dance programs. The level placement results are posted outside the dance office on the student bulletin board.

The last week of the semester is finals week. All classes are required to give either a written final or final presentation during this week. This is a university wide requirement and you need to be present for the final. An absence will severely impact your grade. Do not make travel plans during midterm week or finals week before your tests are taken. Having a plane ticket will not excuse you from taking either the midterm or final.

COMPANY/ENSEMBLE

Auditions for the department company/ensemble will be held during finals week of the previous semester. ONLY BFA DEPARTMENTAL MAJORS ARE ELIGIBLE TO BE IN COMPANY/ENSEMBLE. Anyone taking Dance 367 is not eligible that semester. The Department of Dance has a season of 4 to 6 concerts a year. During the audition, faculty and guest artists are looking for various qualities such as: professionalism, attitude, good training, classroom behavior, and willingness to try new movement approaches, commitment, schedule, and humility. Company/ensemble members are often used to represent UNLV at various community events as well as

national and international festivals. IT IS A PRIVELAGE TO BE PART OF THE COMPANY/ENSEMBLE, NOT A RIGHT. IF YOU ARE ON ACIDEMIC PROBATION OR HAVE FAILED ANY DEPARTMENAL CLASS THE PERVIOUS SEMESTER YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO BE PART OF THE COMPANY/ENSEMBLE.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Dance scholarships are usually awarded to outstanding students who are committed to the department, who put in quality time and energy either in performance or production, are talented, and have a good GPA. All students are encouraged to apply and must fill out the application forms in the dance office. Departmental scholarships are not based solely on need or GPA. Those students in financial need should apply to the University Financial aid Office.

INFORMATION

The Department of Dance will communicate official information to students in the following ways only. The department will send out a weekly newsletter that will be sent to your UNLV e-mail account.
