(A)

While Andrew was getting ready for work one Friday morning, he announced to his wife that he had finally decided to ask his boss for a salary raise. All day Andrew felt nervous and anxious as he thought about the upcoming showdown (摊牌). What if Mr Larchmont refused to grant his request? Andrew had worked so hard in the last 18 months and landed some great accounts for Braer and Hopkins Advertising Agency. Of course, he deserved a wage increase.

The thought of walking into Larchmont’s office left Andrew weak in the knees. Late in the afternoon he was finally courageous enough to approach his superior. To his delight and surprise, the ever-frugal (一惯节省的) Harvey Larchmont agreed to give Andrew a raise!

Andrew arrived home that evening—despite breaking all city and state speed limits—to a beautiful table set with their best china, and candles lit. His wife, Tina, had prepared a delicate meal including his favorite dishes. Immediately he figured someone from the office had tipped her off!

Next to his plate Andrew found a beautiful lettered note. It was from his wife. It read: ―Congratulations, my love! I knew you’d get the raise! I prepared this dinner to show just how much I love you. I am so proud of your accomplishments!‖ He read it and stopped to reflect on how sensitive and caring Tina was.

After dinner, Andrew was on his way to the kitchen to get dessert when he observed that a second card had slipped out of Tina’s pocket on to the floor. He bent forward to pick it up. It read: ―Don’t worry about not getting the raise! You do deserve one! You are a wonderful provider and I prepared this dinner to show you just how much I love you even though you did not get the increase.‖

Suddenly tears swelled (涌出) in Andrew’s eyes. Total acceptance! Tina’s support for him was not conditional upon his success at work.

Terraforming (Earth-forming) other planets, also known as planetary engineering (行星工程), seems like a task still centuries away for mankind to accomplish. However, it is a vigorous topic that attracts both popular and scientific interest. Why should the possibility of terraforming other planets be studied when it may be centuries before we know enough to even decide if it’s a good idea?

Mankind is getting more and more hard facts about other planets. The atmosphere of

Venus has been explored; robots have surveyed the surface of Mars; Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn have been studied by spacecraft. Speculations have been answered; new questions have been raised, and enough hard data is right now becoming available to allow us to make the first attempt of planetary engineering.

In the past, people with excellent ideas about terraforming have kept them to themselves, or buried them in a desk drawer because they did not realize that anyone else was interested. But now, a wide circle of people has begun to do this kind of work. For instance, NASA funded a project on transforming Mars.

There are several strong reasons which demand that the possibilities of terraforming be studied carefully. First, it’s an exciting idea of a possible future for human beings. Such thinking has a valuable role in providing options for our future directions. Secondly, the techniques of terraforming will also help contemporary technologies in weather and climate control. Thirdly, such study may assist us in detecting any possible existence of extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI, The Search for Extraterrsstial Intelligence, 地外文明搜索) and alien (异己的) civilizations on other planets. Though the mission is far beyond our reach at the moment, we should at least keep our options open. Through debate and study on this subject, the possibility of rebuilding other planets to make them suitable homes for people may come true some day in the future.

72. According to the context, what’s the meaning of the word ―speculation‖ in paragraph 2?

A. The act of discussing something with a group of people.

B. The act of studying and researching.

C. The act of guessing without knowing all the facts about something.

D. The acting of writing letters to a certain organization.

73. Why did people keep the idea of terraforming to themselves in the past?

A. They thought no one else would show interest in the idea.

B. They gradually came to find the idea crazy.

C. They thought the idea would never come true.

D. They had few resources for further study on this topic.

74. Which is NOT the reason to support the study of terraforming?

A. Even if we don’t succe ed in terraforming, such study may help us to better understand

technologies such as climate and weather control.

B. Such study may explore a new direction of development for human beings.

C. Such study may enable us to find the lives on other planets.

D. As the resources on Earth are being drained, it’s very urgent to study how to migrate (迁移) to other planets.

75. What’s the main idea of the article?

A. It’s highly possible that terraforming other planets will come true so we should

increase investing in this program.

B. Even if the idea of terraforming other planets may take centuries to realize, we have many

reasons to support such studies.

C. Terraforming other planets is the best option for human being’s future.

D. More and more people are taking planetary engineering as their occupation. Section C

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each

paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.

A. Heating up in the North as well as the South

B. Geographic knowledge about the Arctic

C. Energy prospects in the Arctic

D. The consequences of Greenland’s ice melt

E. Territorial claims on the Arctic

F. Shrinking ice sheet of the Arctic

Only in the 1890s did a Norwegian explorer prove the Arctic was a deep polar ocean with drifting ice cap. Theories had held that within a belt of ice, open shallow water, and possible land, surrounded the North Pole, or that the ice cap was solid and unmoving. In the 1950s ocean-floor features started to come into focus, from data gathered by floating ice stations and submarines. Now that the Arctic is warming more rapidly than any other place on Earth, knowledge of what lies beneath its ocean is changing just as fast.

The Arctic Ocean may hold nearl y a quarter of the world’s unexplored oil and natural gas. Most is expected to be found on the shallow continental shelves. The deposits formed from algae and plankton that grew more than 100 million years ago, when Earth was warmer and the Arctic ice free. More than 400 oil and gas fields have already been discovered within the Arctic Circle, largely onshore.

The empire of ice at the top of the world is shrinking. The Arctic Ocean’s summer ice covers little more than half its former area. Sea ice, naturally expanding and contracting with the seasons, has covered this ocean year-round for most of the past three million years. But the Arctic is uniquely sensitive to climate change. Ten years ago global –warming models predicted that Arctic Ocean could be ice free in summer by 2100. Then the date dropped to 2050, and now to 2030—or sooner.

The Northern Hemisphere has experienced a greater temperature rise than the Southern, in part because it has more land, which warms faster than open oceans. Yet troubling signs of warming in Antarctica—where the vast continental ice sheet holds 85 percent of Earth’s freshwater ice—make it clear that the bottom of the world is also vulnerable.

Greenland’s ice sheet is so massive—a mile thick on average—that it creates its own weather. But new snowfall can no longer replace the ice the world’s largest island is losing each year. A warming ocean also plays into the ice sheet’s thaw. Sea levels aren’t affected by melting Arctic Ocean ice, already afloat, but the pace of Greenland’s ice melt could help raise sea levels five feet by 2100.

Hans Christian Andersen put Denmark on the map of the world literature with his stories The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling. Now Copenhagen, the country’s capital, has become the center of the world political map, with 190 world leaders attending the climate talks there, not to mention thousands of reporters.

Just how much do you know about the Scandinavian country?

Denmark is famous for its design culture. At the heart of ―Danish Design‖ is the idea that, as poet and designer Piet Hein puts it: ―There is one art, not more, no r less, and that is to do all things with artlessness.‖

Danish design places equal emphasis on practicality and equality. From Lego toys to furniture, Danish products are known for their clean lines, simplicity and functionality. ―Remove material where it’s not needed. Keep things simple and functional and produce them carefully,‖ explained Hans J. Wegner, the first Danish designer to achieve worldwide fame: ―The aim is not to create a work of art, but to produce a good chair.‖

“The Danes have done a better job than most in promoting arts in Europe, packing a punch (用力出击) above their country’s size and population in the fields of architecture, sculpture and design,”writes Helena Smith, reporter with British newspaper the Guardian.

The simplicity of Danish design may extend to the quality of life there. Some even claim that the Danes have the highest quality of life of any nation in the world.

Kate Vial, a 55-year-old American who has lived and worked in Denmark for more than 30 years, explaining why she chooses to live in Denmark rather than the US, told Germany’s biggest news weekly Der Spiegel: ―I just chose a simpler lifestyle, one where I could ride my bike all over and where I don’t have to make a great living to survive.‖

81. Copenhagen has been the focus of attention of the world now because _______________.

82. What characteristics do Danish products have?

83. According to a reporter, people in Denmark are superior to people in Europe in promoting arts as far as ______________________________ are concerned.

8. M: How are your studies coming? Do you think you are ready for the test?

W: Not really, but I guess I’ll make it a ll right.

Q: What does the woman mean?

9. W: There is a table for eight over there. I think Tom should have invited Mary to the party, don’t you?

M: It’s none of our business. If Tom had wanted to invite her, he would have.

Section B

Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked three questions on each of the passages. The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions 11 and 13 are based on the following passage.

In Kansas City, Missouri, a computer helps firemen. The computer contains information about every one of the 350,000 street addresses in the city. When firemen answer a call, the computer gives them important information about the burning building. The computer can give the location of the building and its size, type, and contents. In fact, the computer system has many different ways of helping fire fighters with their problems. For example, it can give medical information about sick people living in a burning building. With this information, the firemen can take special care to find these sick persons and remove them quickly and safely from the burning building.

The speed of the computer is amazing. Within two or three seconds after a call is received, the computer provides necessary information for the firemen. The information is then sent to them by radio from the computer center in City Hall.

The Kans as City computer system also contains a medical record of each of the city’s 900 firemen. This kind of information is especially useful when a fire fighter is injured. With this medical information, doctors at the hospital can treat the injured firemen more quickly and easily.

Kansas City firemen themselves are thankful for the computer’s help. The computer tells them about possible dangers ahead of them and helps them prepare for them.

Many times the computer information helps to save lives and property. Sometimes the lives are those of firemen themselves!

(Now listen again, please.)

Questions:

11. What is the main idea of this passage?

12. Why does the computer contain medical records of each fireman?

13. How does the computer help firemen?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following news.

The trouble with my dad is that he’s too energetic! His idea is to walk twenty kilometers a day, up and down mountains. And—until last year—my mum and I had to go with him. ―This is fun, isn’t it?‖ he used to say every five kilometers. We groaned and sighed but we never actually protested.

Then, Last May, my mum suddenly said one evening, ―We’re not going walking again this year, are we?‖ And I added, ―Why don’t we go to the sea side for a change? That would be fun, wouldn’t it?‖ My dad was surprised and a bit hurt I think, but he didn’t say anything.

For the next two months my mum talked about nothing else. ―It’ll be lovely on the beach, won’t it?‖ she kept saying.

Then, in August, we went to Bournemouth together. For the first two days we lay on the beach and were quite happy. My mum said, over and over again, ―It’s nice here, isn’t it?‖ My dad didn’t say anything.

Two days later we’d had enough of the sea and the sand and the sun. Or more exactly, we’d had enough of doing nothing. We are bored. But we didn’t say anything to my dad. Until, on the fifth day, he suddenly said, ―you don’t want to stay here all time, do you?‖ My mum and I looked at each other. He was right. ―We could go for a long walk tomorrow, couldn’t we?‖ he said. ―Why don’t we go this afternoon?‖ said my mum.

Another thing about my dad is that he’s always right!

(Now listen again, please.)

Questions:

14. What did the author’s father like to do on his holiday?

15. Who suggested going to the beach for a change?

16. What made the family give up staying at the beach for long?

Section C

Directions: In Section C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice. After you hear each conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with the information you have heard. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

M: Had a good holiday?

W: All right, thank you. We went to Spain actually.

M: Oh? What was it like?

W: We enjoy ourselves very much. The weather was fine and we just lay on the beach all day.

It felt really marvelous being thoroughly lazy for a long change.

M: Well, you’re certainly looking brown. We went touring round Scotland.

W: What was the weather like there?

M: Not as hot as Spain, I suppose, but pretty good. Fascinating country. I’d never realized how beautiful it was.

W: Yes, I’ve always wanted to go there. What about your brother? Where did he go? M: Oh, he stayed at home and mowed the la wn. That doesn’t sound much of a holiday, does it?

W: Well, with two small children, it’s a bit of problem going away. Hotels are impossible and even camping’s difficult.

M: That sounds sensible.

(Now listen again, please.)

Complete the form. Write ONE WORD for each answer.

Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation.

M: Good morning. My name is Frank Nelson. You must be Mrs. Jackson. I believe you have an appointment for nine o’clock.

W: Yes, I do. I called yesterday, concerning the vacancy in your accounting department.

M: Won’t you sit down, Mrs. Jackson?

W: Thank you.

M: Now will you please tell me what training and previous experience you have had in this line of work?

W: I’d be glad to. I’m a graduate of Griffith Secretarial School and I worked for three years before I was married as an accountant.

M: You seem to have a pretty good background for the job. May I have your address and telephone number?

W: I live at 3702 Ferndale Place. My phone number is 57908643.

M: Well, Mrs. Jackson, you will probably hear from us sometime tomorrow. Can you be reached by telephone any time during the day?

W: Yes, I’ll make a point of staying home tomorrow. Thank you very much, Mr. Nelson.

IV. Summary Writing Secure payment without leaving a trace Computer scientist Andy Rupp, member of the “Signaling Code and Security” working group, is always surprised about lacking problem awareness: only few users are aware of the fact that by using payment systems they disclose in detail how and what they consume or which routes they have taken. To prevent control of the accounts by dishonest users, customer data and account balances of payment are usually carried out with the help of a central database. In every payment deal, the customer is identified and the details of her/his deal are transmitted to the central database. This repeated identification process produces a data trace that might be misused by the provider or third parties. The expert has now presented the basics of an “electronic purse” that works by unknown names, but prevents misuse at the same time. The “black-box addition plus” (BBA+) code system developed by them transfers all necessary account data to the card used or the smartphone and guarantees their secrets with the help of signaling code methods. At the same time, BBA+ offers security guarantees for the operator of the payment system: The code system guarantees a correct account balance and is mathematically constructed such that the identity of the user is disclosed as soon as the attempt is made to pay with a controlled account. “Our new code system guarantees privacy and security for customers during offline operation as well,” Andy Rupp says. “This is needed for ensuring the payment system’s suitability for daily use. Think of a subway doorway or a payment bridge. There you may have no internet connection at all or it is very slow.” Also its high efficiency makes the code system suited for everyday use: During first test runs, researchers completed payments within about one second. ①when customers use payment systems, most of them don’t realize the fact that by doing so, they risk( take the risk of ) losing privacy. ②Researchers have now developed a secure system called BBA+, which works anonymously and avoids misuses as well. ③moreover ( apart from / besides the security of privacy), it also proves to be efficient for daily use.(47 words) 【2018—崇明区一模】 IV. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. One【宝山】 (A) “Runners, to your mark, Get set…” Bang! And I was off, along with a bunch of other teenage cross-country runners from high schools across the county. The day was like any other fair-weather autumn day in Maryland. But the race that day felt unique from the get-go. For one thing, I liked the course. It was my team’s home course, one I was used to running durin g practices. It took runners along an area of land that included open fields, hills and even winding dirt paths through a small forest. It was a beautiful 5-kilometer course. This particular race was our team’s invite, and I was proud to be sharing the cou rse with competitors from other schools. It also meant a lot―more than normal that my parents were there to cheer me on. With so much to expect that day, I was ready to run! And I didn’t want to be stuck with the pack of other runners, as is typical at the beginning of most cross-country races. So when the gun sounded, I took off running, leaving everyone else in the dust. The first part of our course followed the outside edge of a large open field before disappearing into the forest. Within seconds of the start, I was far ahead of everyone, and all of the fans could see it. It felt magnificent. But that feeling didn’t last long. Little did I know my coach was laughing to himself, thinking, “Gabe is done for!” And I was. My body was telling me to slow down. My pride, however, said “No! Not until you’re out of sight of the spectators!” I was in agony, but I kept up my pace until I reached the forest. Once in among the trees. I slowed way down. I enjoyed most races, even while pushing myself, but this one was not enjoyable in the least. I finished the race, but in nowhere near the time I could have if I’d paced myself well from the beginning. Every time I reflect on that cross-country season, I’m reminded of something: Pride is no substitute for pace. 56.What is special to the author about the race? A. The weather condition was good for runners. B. He was familiar with the home course.

This was (22)________ I built up my collection of Cadoozles, which are short mechanical pencils decorated with brightly colored spaceships and ice cream bars. But I've long since used up all my Cadoozles and a majority of the mechanical pencils that I (23) ________(hide) in an empty moon-cake tin so many years before, which makes me reflect fondly back on those old days, when receiving a mechanical pencil was as easy as drinking a glass of water. Mechanical pencils are not only more convenient than your traditional Ticonderoga in the sense that they never need (24) ________ (sharpen); they also produce thinner, cleaner lines, which is extremely important for drawers and drafters. Furthermore, they are environmentally friendly, since you don't have to buy (25) ________ wooden pencil whenever you run out of lead(铅芯). You can simply refill your mechanical pencil. There is only one slight negative I must remark on, (26)________ is that as someone who calls mechanical pencils "lead pencil" in casual conversation, the term "lead pencil" is confusing. Mechanical pencil lead is actually not made from the chemical element lead. It is made from a mixture of graphite and clay, which (27)________ not give you lead poisoning. This is contrary to what my third-grade teacher said when she saw my classmate John clicking his mechanical pencil against his index finger out of boredom: "John, stop that! You're going to get lead poisoning!" I think all the third-graders (and teachers) in the world would feel much (28)________(safe) if they knew what really made up the pencils they use every day.
