We don’t have beds in the spacecraft, but we do have sleeping bags. During the day, when we are working, we lea ve the bags toed to the wall, out of the way. At bedtime we untie them and take them wherever we have chosen to sleep.

On most spacecraft flights everyone sleeps at the same time. No one has to stay awake to watch over the spacecraft; the craft’s computers call us on the radio.

On the spacecraft, sleep-time doesn’t mean nighttime. During each ninety-minute orbit() the sun ―rises‖ and shines through our windows for about fifty minutes, then it ―sets‖ as the spacecraft takes us around the dark side of the ea rth. To keep the sun out of our eyes, we wear black sleep masks.

It’s surprisingly easy to get comfortable and fall asleep in space. Every astronaut sleeps differently: some sleep upside down, some sideways, and some right side up. When it’s time to sleep, I take my bag, my sleep mask and my tape player with earphones and float up to the flight deck. Then I get into the bag, and float in a sitting position just above a seat, right next to a window. Before I pull the mask down over my eyes, I relax for a while, listening to a music and watching the earth go by under me.

36. When the astronauts are working, sleeping bags are fastened _______.

A. on the wall

B. to their seats

C. onto the flight deck

D. anywhere they like

37. Why can all the astronauts sleep at the same time?

C. There are enough sleeping bags in the spacecraft

D. There is no need for them to watch over the spacecraft

38. To relax himself before sleep, the writer often _______.

A. makes a bed

B. gets into his bag

C. listens to radio

D. wears a sleep mask

39. How long does it take the spacecraft to go round the earth?

A. forty minutes

B. fifty minutes

When a rare disease ALD threatened to kill the four-year-old boy Lorenzo, his parents refused to give up hope. Doctors explained that there was no cu re for ALD, and that he would probably die within three years. But Lorenzo’s parents set out to prove the doctors wrong.

The parents devoted themselves to keeping their son alive and searching for a cure. But the doctors and the families of other ALD patients often refused to take them seriously. They thought the efforts to find a cure were a waste of time, and drug companies weren’t interested in supporting research into such a rare disease.

Think twice before using mobile phones in elevators, museums, churches or other indoor public places—especially enclosed spaces. Would you want to listen to someone’s conversation in these places? The holiday shopping season got off to a flying start over the Thanksgiving(感恩节) weekend in the U.S. Retailers (零售商) attracted discount-hungry consumers with specials(特价商品) of televisions, DVD players and other gifts. Discounters like Wal-Mart and Target had the greatest success, offering customers early bird specials, while major department stores and clothing chains only met modest sales goals. Online sales were also strong.

―It was as expected. It wasn’t source of great prosperity, but it was a good start,‖ said Nevill, a man in a US retail consulting firm. He said, ―One thing we often heard was that only things marked down(降价) were selling. Consumers want a bargain, especially around the holiday.‖ Shoppers did seem to like the many markdowns. A lady in the State of Connecticut said, ―I’ve never seen so many sales. I feel like a kid in a candy store.‖

Nevill estimated that discounters ha d a 4% gain over last year’s Thanksgiving figure, while sales at department stores and mall-based clothing chains were up 2% for the weekend. However, the Thanksgiving weekend is not necessarily a good way to judge how retailers will be successful for the season. Over the past few years, the weekend accounted for less than 10% of sales.

Online merchants also had a good weekend. Sales were up 61% last Friday, compared to the day after Thanksgiving a year ago.

36. Over the Thanksgiving weekend, people bought a lot more than usual because_________.

A.Wal-Mart and Target offered birds as gifts

B.Shopping was the major weekend activity

C.People had time to go shopping online

D.They were allowed special discounts

37. Retailers have the experience that consumers seem to ______.

A.feel eager to buy discounted good

B.be hungry for special kinds of goods

C.like to buy new DVD players as gifts

D.be interested in major department stores

38. From the context we know that Wal-Mart and Target are the names of two_____.

A. food stores

B. large retailers

C. online services

D. clothing chains

39. By saying ―I feel like a kid in a candy store,‖ the lady in Connecticut probably means that ______.

A.she has difficulty choosing from such a wide variety of goods

B.she cannot decide whether she should buy some candy

C.she is quite interested in buying candy

D.she recalls her happy childhood days

40. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?_____

A.Online sales were 61% higher than retailers’.

B.Online merchants had an average weekend sale.

C.Retailers lost much profit because of the discounts they offered

D.Retailers had an increase in sales in the Thanksgiving weekend

Task 3

Directions: This following is an Introduction to Montserrat Publishing. After reading it, you are required to complete the outline below it(No.46 through No.50). You should write your answers briefly (in not more than three words)

on the Answer Sheet correspondingly.

We at Montserrat Publishing have published two books devoted to improving the everyday vocabulary of intermediate and advanced English language students.

You probably find that even though you have been studying English for many years, you still have problems following a social conversation between English speaking people.

Maybe you need English for business and you have a wide knowledge of the vocabulary relating to your specialty (专业) but you find it difficult to conduct meetings in English. This is because you cannot understand the practical, everyday expressions being employed. You may also need to understand journals and trade magazines written in English where a dictionary is not enough to convey the real meaning of what is being said.

The Practical Everyday English series consists of a collection of words and expressions used every day by all classes of a society. The idea is that after being presented with a word or expression the reader can see how it is used by reading two or three which have been studied on earlier pages.

Task 5

英语口语考试试题及参考复习资料

1.How can we keep friendship alive. Friendship is absolutely crucial for us. We have to do hard work to build up and sustain friendship. Here are some important ways to keep friendship alive .First of all, let your friends know that you care about them. If you can't be there at the given moment, say something like, I wish I could be with you. May I call you tomorrow? Be sure your friend knows she's cared about. Second, try to be with your friends when they are in trouble. Remember troubled people are most in need of their friends to stay around. The last but not the least, keeping friendship alive is to say to your friends I miss you and I love you . Remember? 2.Is it right for college students to have tattoos? Nowadays many college students like to highlight their personalities, to be their own. They have taken special ways to show their personalities. For example, some college students who are tattooed think tattooing is cool and shows great personality. But teachers and parents do not think tattooing is right for students. They believe to be a student you should dress like a student--no tattoos, of cause. Some people even believe that those who are tattooed are not good students. As far as I am concerned, although many people can not accept students' tattooing, nothing is wrong with tattooing. College students are grown-ups. They can tell right from wrong. If they want to be tattooed, just remember to tell them to select clean places, preferably with parental consents. 3.What do cultural difference mean ? Can you give some examples? Cultural differences mean differences among people in ways of thinking, life, aesthetic concepts, social practices, diet and etc. Let's talk about, for example, eating habits in different areas. In China, people prefer vegetables and fruits, for the Chinese believe that such things are rich in vc, which are good to health. However, western people are more likely to eat meat. Known as having a good tradition of hospitality , Chinese people always greet their guests with warm hand. Chinese meal table normally is filled with delicious food, yet the host is used to saying I am sorry. I don't think the food is good enough today and other courtesies. Host or hostess sometimes use their chopsticks to take food to the guest's bowl, which is considered as a way to show hospitality in China. However, in western countries, people emphasize respect to individuality. At dinner, people eat whatever they like or we say they eat at their own will. th birthday is one of the most important days in your life? Give reasons. 4.Do you consider your 18th birthday is considered the most important. Each birthday means a new year. I am most concerned about Yes, 18my 18th birthday as it is a sign of adulthood, indicating that I am no longer a child, but one who can try to do things independently and should be reliable for his or her own actions as an adult. Since my eighteenth birthday, I am entitled to go shopping alone, to travel alone and to live independently. I still remembered my 18th birthday. After my birthday celebration, I suddenly felt grown up, both physically and mentally. Birthday to me is an important turning point, enabling me to learn and think independently. So far as I am concerned about each birthday, I usually feel better. 5. Is money the most important thing in your life ? If not, what is it? No, money is not the most important thing in my life. I think the most important thing in life is love. First, everything is born of love. When a child is born, his parents give him or her lots of love in creating a healthy environment for him or her. Secondly, what society needs is also love, if there is no love among members in society, it will become listless apathy. Third, though money can buy something, it can not give or buy love. Love yourself and 8

The government was badly run and people’s lives were miserable. King Louis XIV tried to control the national parliament and raise more taxes. But his effort failed. He ordered his troops to Versailles. The people thought that Louis intended to put down the Revolution by force. On July 14,1789, they stormed and took the Bastille, where political prisoners were kept. Ever since that day, July 14 has been the French National Day. Louis tried to flee the country in 1792 to get support from Austria and Prussia. However, he was caught and put in prison. In September 1792, the monarchy was abolished. In the same year, Louis was executed. A few months later his wife, Marie also had her head cut off. The Revolution of France had frightened the other kings of Europe. Armies from Austria and Prussia began to march against France. The French raised republican armies to defend the nation. The Revolution went through a period of terror. Thousands of people lost their lives. In the end, power passed to Napoleon Bonaparte.
