People living on parts of the south coast of England face a serious problem. In 1993, the owners of a large hotel and of several houses discovered, to their horror, that their gardens had disappeared overnight. The sea had eaten into the soft limestone cliffs on which they had been built. While experts were studying the problem, the hotel and several houses disappeared altogether, sliding down the cliff and into the sea.

Erosion(侵蚀)of the white cliffs along the south coast of England has always been a problem but it has become more serious in recent years. Dozens of homes have had to be abandoned as the sea has crept farther and farther inland. Experts have studied the areas most affected and have drawn up a map for local people, forecasting the year in which their homes will be swallowed up by the hungry sea.

Angry owners have called on the Government to erect sea defenses to protect their homes. Government surveyors have pointed out that in most cases, this is impossible. New sea walls

would cost hundreds of millions of pounds and would merely make the waves and currents go further along the coast, shifting the problem from one area to another. The danger is likely to continue, they say, until the waves reach an inland area of hard rock which will not be eaten as limestone is. Meanwhile, if you want to buy a cheap house with an uncertain future, apply to a house agent in one of the threatened areas on the south coast of England. You can get a house for a knockdown price but it may turn out to be a knockdown home.

Sport is not only physically challenging, but it can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create an excessive amount of anxiety or stress for young athletes(运动员). Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological, and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.

3

The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents' and coaches' criticisms to heart and find a flaw(缺陷)in themselves.

Coaches and parents should also be cautious that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today's youth sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game, many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find fault with youngsters' performances. Positive reinforcement should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive reinforcement motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.

36. An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is __________________.

A) to make sports less competitive

B) to make sports more challenging

C) to reduce their mental stress

D) to increase their sense of success

37. According to the passage sport is positive for young people in that _____________.

D) it can provide them with valuable experiences

38. Many coaches and parents are in the habit of criticizing young athletes ________.

A) without realizing criticism may destroy their self confidence

B) in order to make them remember life's lessons

C) believing that criticism is beneficial for their early development

D) so as to put more pressure on them

39. According to the passage parents and coaches should _______________.

A) help children to win every game

B) pay more attention to letting children enjoy sports

C) enable children to understand the positive aspect of sports

D) train children to cope with stress

40. The author's purpose in writing the passage is _________________.

A) to persuade young children not to worry about criticism

C) to discuss the skill of combining criticism with encouragement

D) to teach young athletes how to avoid burnout

46. Thousands of years ago the ancient peoples found out that days were longer in summer than in winter, and nights were shorter. They knew that this had a great deal to do with the changes of the seasons and the growth of plants and animals. They determined through generations of painstaking observation that the day was shortest in the Northern Hemisphere on the 22nd of December, after which it gradually grew longer until the 21st of June, when the day was the longest in the year and the night was the shortest. After that, the day would begin to shorten again gradually. In the beginning, the actual dates of these two days had to be calculated for each individual year, and depended on what kind of calendar was being used.

PART Ⅰ: Write a summary of the following text. This summary should include the main points in your own words with NO MORE THAN 200 words. (40%) Children Must be T aught to T ell Right from Wrong William Kilpatrick Many of today’s young people have a difficult time seeing any moral dimension to their actions. There are a number of reasons why that’s true, but none more prominent than a failed system of education that eschews (回避) teaching children the traditional moral values that bind Americans together as a society and a culture. That failed approach, called “decision-making,” was introduced in schools 25 years ago. It tells children to decide for themselves what is right and what is wrong. It replaced “character education. (品格教育)” Character education didn’t ask children to reinvent the moral wheel (浪费时间重新发明早已存在的道德标准); instead, it encouraged them to practice habits of courage, justice and self-control. In the 1940s, when a character education approach prevailed, teachers worried about students chewing gum; today they worry about robbery and rape. Decision-making curriculums pose thorny (棘手的) ethical dilemmas to students, leaving them with the impression that all morality is problematic and that all questions of right and wrong are in dispute. Y oungsters are forced to question values and virtues they’ve never acquired in the first place or upon which they have only a tenuous (薄弱的) hold. The assumption behind this method is that students will arrive at good moral conclusions if only they are given the chance. But the actual result is moral confusion. For example, a recent national study of 1,700 sixth- to ninth-graders revealed that a majority of boys considered rape to be acceptable under certain conditions. Astoundingly, many of the girls agreed. This kind of moral illiteracy is further encouraged by values-education (价值观教育) programs that are little more than courses in self-esteem (自尊). These programs are based on the questionable assumption that a child who feels good about himself or herself won’t want to do anything wrong. But it is just as reasonable to make an opposite assumption: namely, that a child who has uncritical self-regard wi ll conclude that he or she can’t do anything bad. Such naive self-acceptance results in large part from the non-directive (无指导性的), non-judgmental (无是非观的), as-long-as-you-feel-comfortable-with-your-choices mentality (思想) that has pervaded (渗透) public education for the last two and one-half decades. Many of today’s drug education, sex education and values-education courses are based on the same 1960s philosophy that helped fuel the explosion in teen drug use and sexual activity in the first place. Meanwhile, while educators are still fiddling with (胡乱摆弄) outdated “feel-good” approaches, New Y ork, Washington, and Los Angeles are burning. Y oungsters are leaving school

评:在最后一句“回眸一笑百媚生,六宫粉黛无颜色”中,译者将“百媚”翻 译为“ full of grace ” ,在此处应取“ eleganee and beauty of movement expression , a beautiful figure which she used in subtle movements unparalleled grace ”这一义,我认为此处强调的是“媚”这个字,这种美是无 人能比的,以至于六宫粉黛无颜色,所以在翻译之时,可以把这种媚翻译成魅 力,而且是“百媚”,此处“百”又不是真的“ hundred ”,而是一种“ end beauty, end of charm ”。 or of of 评:第二句杨家有女初长成中, womanhood just grow ,womanhood 略感多余,前面已经用 了 maiden ,意透露性别信息,无需再次强调女性身份,第三句中天生丽质难自弃,用 en dowed with n atural beauty, en dow 之嫌,一朝选在君王侧翻作 selected for the mon arch' 妃,回眸一笑百媚生,六宫粉黛无颜色有承接关系,觉得, 已有天生具有的意思,再用 natural 强调原生有语义赘余 s side,太过直译,可以意译为入宫为 that 放入前半句更好, that she turns her head, with a sweet and grace smile 。 The beauty-lovi ng mon arch Ion ged year after year To find a beautiful lady without peer. A maide n of the Yan gs* to woma nhood just grow n.

Mansfield,Katherine (1888-1923), pseudonym of KATHLEEN MANSFIELD BEAUCHAMP,British short-story writer, born in Wellington, New Zealand. She is considered one of the great masters of the short-story form. At the age of 18 she settled in London to study music and to establish herself as a writer. In 1918 she married the English literary critic John Middleton Murry. She spent the last five years of her life seeking a cure for the tuberculosis that afflicted her. Mansfield's stories are poetic, delicate, and ironic; they are characterized by a subtle sensitivity to mood and emotion, revealing the inner conflicts her characters face and resolve. Her style, much influenced by that of the Russian writer Anton Chekhov,in turn had great influence on later short-story writing. Collections of her short fiction include In a German Pension (1911); Bliss (1920), which contains stories evocative of her homeland; and The Garden Party (1922), her finest work. The Dove's Nest (1923) and Something Childish (1924),both edited by her husband, were published after Mansfield's death, as were collections of her poems, journals, and letters.
