Many kids think they are ordinary. They don’t think they are the prettiest or the smartest. At the same time, they don’t think they are even the ugliest or the silliest, which would at least make them stand out. Everyone feels that way sometimes, especially in middle school. Kids seldom realize how special they are. When they see amazing athletes or cool pop stars, they often think what they have got.

It is all parts of growing up. Growing up means, understanding what you can do and what you can offer the world. When you’re young, you don’t see that. But as you get older, you realize that just by being yourself, you do offer something to other people. Maybe you aren’t the best, but that doesn’t make you “not amazing”.

Think about your friends carefully. Write down a list of things that you like about them. Think about why you are friends with them in the first place. You will get to know that in the end, no matter if they aren’t the smartest or the prettiest or the most talented, they are great in their own way. And they feel just the same about you!

Remember, it gets easier as you grow older. Y ou will realize that being the best at something is great, but it’s okay if you cannot be the best. If you just live your life and try hard, you are still pretty amazing.

51.It is common that young students____▲______.

A.worry about their looks B.want to be the ugliest

C.don’t care for their study D.want to be different from others

52.The writer thinks growing up means understanding____▲______.

A.you get older B.what you can do yourself

C.what you can do for others D.both B and C

53.In the third paragraph, the writer wants to tell us____▲______.

A.you should always like your friends B.you shouldn’t forget your friends

C.your friends are special and you’re special, too

D.your friends keep the good friendship

54.You’ll get to know that your friends are great in their own way____▲______.

A.in the end B.at the first

C.when you grow older D.when you do offer something

55.From the passage, you can know____▲______.

A.how special you are B.how you can easily grow up

C.why you’re so ordinary D.how you can become good friends

Ladies and gentlemen, I returned to this year in a time machine. In the year 2500, we are able to travel through time to any year in the history of the earth. This year is your last chance to change your lifestyle to save the earth.

Beginning in the middle of the 20th century, a few people were worried about polluting the earth’s water and air, but most people did not change their ways of lives. Instead, they continued to pour dangerous chemicals and other wastes into lakes and seas, to drive more and more cars and trucks, and to cut down trees.

By the year 2200, the earth’s water was completely polluted.People could no longer drink water, and they had to use other types of liquids(液体). Scientists said that in the future there might be too many people on the earth. But not enough was done.

So, by the year 2300, there were so many people that food became scarce. There was no water to grow food and all of the fish in the lakes and seas died because of pollution. Terrier wars broke out(爆发) between the rich and the poor. Scientists were working very hard to find another planet in space where humans could live.

By the year 2400, the air was too polluted for humans to breathe. So we had to leave the earth. But only the rich were able to leave. Where did we go? Nowhere. And everywhere. You see scientists did not find another safe planet, so now we must travel around the universe in our space ships. We are still looking for a place to call our home.

So, it is up to you to change history. There is still hope. You must change your lifestyle now, before it is too late.

To live a low-carbon life, we should eat less meat. Everybody knows eating too much meat makes people fat and easy to have heart disease, but maybe you don’t know keeping animals for food produces even more carbon dioxide than all the cars in the world, and being a vegetarian can help reduce(减少) one

and a half tons(吨) of carbon dioxide a year. Maybe it is a little difficult, but it’s really necessary.

To live a low-carbon life, we are supposed to do less shopping. When we go shopping, we may drive a car or take other transportations. On the one hand, these machines pollute the air and waste energy. On the other hand, most of us always buy some useless things because of some advertisements. It is not only a waste of money but also causes trouble to the earth, because as you know, making everything will produce carbon dioxide more or less.

湖南自考学位英语模拟试题及答案详解(一)

2013湖南学位英语仿真模拟试题 试题(一) Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debt and y ou don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this rally a lie? Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. (76)According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly w hen telling a “white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intension of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way. Research has also be en done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. T o the trained observer th ey are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now.” They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressures make it itch. Another gesture which gives liars away is what the writer Desmond Morris in his book Manwatching calls “the mouth cover”.(77)He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with the fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the mouth. Such a gesture
