Wang Chuanfu, chairman of BYD Co.,Ltd., was named China‘s richest individual this week by Forbes magazine, which stated his wealth is worth $ 5.8 billion.

Wang grew up in a poor family in Anhui Province and had lost his parents for illness when he was a teenager. He went to college only after the encouragement and support of his older siblings (兄弟姐妹), who also helped him.

―I was born on a rice farm very, very poor,‖ Wang told The Wall Street Journal in an interview last year.―Both of my parents were farmers and they planted rice. Both passed away when I was still very young. I was about 10 years old when my father died, and I was 15 or so when my mother passed away. ‖He developed a fascination with batteries back in his university days in the mid-1980s, when he studied metallurgical physics and chemistry. After receiving a Master‘s degree, he fo und a research position at the General Research Institute for Nonferrous Metals in Beijing. It was an easy job, but he grew bored and decided to go out on his own just as China‘s experiment with capitalism was going on.

He established the company that is now BYD in 1995, borrowing $300,000 from a cousin, and started out making batteries for cellphones. Today, the company still makes phone batteries but also produces gasoline- fueled cars that have made BYD a top-10 auto brand in China.

The company, listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange since 2002, is also getting ready to sell electric cars to private buyers and launch an all-electric battery car model soon in China. All this has helped BYD attract investors‘ attention, including from one of Warren Buffett‘s companies, and has helped enrich Wang as BYD‘s share price has in creased.

Wang‘s fast climb shows personal struggle is still working in China even as the country faces widening gaps between the haves and the have-nots.

The survey by The Harvard Crimson was emailed to incoming first-year undergraduates; 1,600 students responded. Results showed that at least a tenth of the students polled admitted to having cheated on an exam before starting at the university, while almost half admitted to cheating on their homework.

Athletes were apparently the most prone to cheating. 20 percent of students who played a university sport admitted to cheating on an exam compared to 9 percent of students who did not.

The survey also revealed that men were not only more likely to cheat but were also more likely to admit to it.

The results, compared to a previous survey done on the class of 2013, suggested that cheating may be becoming more commonplace. The survey come in the wake of a cheating scandal at the university which saw 120 students investigated for sharing answers on an exam in 2022. One recent graduate stated:―Cheating was commonplace when I was at Harvard, especially with students in their first year or two. I would say as many as 60 percent of students took notes into some exams. No one really cared and the faculty, will some of them at least, seemed to recog nize and yet ignore the problem. ‖

In an email to NBC news, Jeff Neal, a Harvard representative, explained that a committee, made up of faculty, staff and students had been established to tackle cheating, which ―is a national problem in American education‖.

25. Of the following university students, who is most likely to cheat?

350 million yuan in one week puts famous actress Zhao Wei at the top of the list of most profitable female directors. Before her the place belonged to Xue Xiaolu, the director of Finding Mr. Right, which hit Chinese screens early this year.

With the box office success of So Young, people are once again turning their nostalgic eyes to youth —an era of passion and pain, of hope and heartbreak. The reason why youth is such a soft spot for many people is that its intangible nature cannot be truly grasped until it is lost.

―It is the period between education and employment, between dependence and independence,‖says Zhang Yiwu, professor of Chinese literature at Peking University.

But Jiang Chuling, the writer of So Young, says youth shares many similarities with home. When you leave home, you start missing it. ―I think youth is meaningless for young people. Only when you look back

does it acquire a special meaning,‖ she says.

For Zhang Y ueran, 31, who is regarded as one of the country‘s most promising young novelist, ―heroism in youth‖ was a cultural asset of people born in the 1970s, but it was swept away by the materialism that is so common in today‘s world.

Nostalgia for the post-1980s and post-1990s generation, according to Zhang Yiwu, comes from their frustration and anxiety. Born into the most affluent society in 100 years, this generation of single children is not as tough as their predecessors.

―They have very high expectations toward life and their disappointment and frustra tion with reality is huge,‖ says Zhang. ―So they turn to the past for comfort, even though they are still young. ‖So Young tells a love story set in the 80s and 90s. The idea of reflecting about past time has helped the film win a lot of appreciation. One audience member said, ―I think the story can really bring back memories for a lot of people. It‘s got something we‘ve all experienced, but can lead us to different feelings. ‖―Everyone experiences youth and every generation considers their youth to have been special. But actually, most people‘s memory of youth is the same—it‘s a journey from in experience to knowledge, from thoughtlessness to responsibility. And this journey is often marked by pain—the emotion that leaves the deepest scars within us‖, say Jiang.

33. We can infer from the passage that ______.

A. Zhao Wei took the first place in film profit

B. the film has been very popular among teenagers

C. So Yong is a film which is hard to understand

D. people often celebrate their growth with a ceremony

34. From the passage, we know that ―heroism in youth‖ was____.

A. the most powerful adolescents‘ character

B. the sympathy to the heroes and society

C. removed by our materialistic society

D. so common in today‘s colorful world

35. It can be learned from the text that ____.

A. the film recalls people of memory of their youth

B. young people often feel disappointed to their youth

C. people often compare their youth to a happy journey

D. everyone experiences great frustration to the society

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning the fact. ___36___ When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his

memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. ___37___ One of them exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motor car all day.

If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. ___38___, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault as if it was his arms or legs that were weak. Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever; but all of us can, if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means––practice.

Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can? ___39___ Of course, because those who cannot read or write have to remember things: they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, time and prices, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised.

___40___, learn from the poor: practice remembering.

A.What do you think of it?

B.Yet many people don‘t know that the memory works in the same way.

Computers in China

According to a recent investigation, about one third of the city families have computers. Besides, many village people are more and more interested in computers

and some of them even have bought computers. Nearly three quarters of the parents

bought computers for their children to study, and some for their work. And three out

of ten bought them for entertainment. The fact how the middle school students use the computers really surprises us. Only about 30% of them use computers to fine out

useful information. Almost one half use computers to play games and a small part use compute rs to watch VCDs or listen to music.

In my opinion, we should make better use of our best invention—computers.

录音原文:

Text 1

W: Hey, you have so many clocks in your bedroom. Are you crazy or what?

M: No, I am a heavy sleeper. I want to make sure I can wake up in the morning.

Text 2

W: The food in this restaurant doesn‘t taste good. I‘d rather eat in the school‘s dining hall.

M: But the food isn‘t everything. Isn‘t it pleasant to have dinner with light music, without people sitting around you laughing and talking loudly?

Text 3

M: If I were you, I‘d rid e a bike to work. Taking a bus during rush hour is really terrible.

W: Thanks for your advice, but I‘ve lost my bike recently.

Text 4

W: Sweetie, let‘s go out for a walk.

M: It looks like rain. How about going to a bar for a beer?

W: But I can‘t drink beer with the medicine I‘m taking. Why not go to a movie?

M: I would rather watch a video online.

Text 5

W: I‘d like to have my car serviced — the engine and the wheels checked. How long will that take?

M: Oh, well, it‘s rather late. I‘m afraid it‘ll take hours. You‘ll have to have it done in the morning. But we can lend you a car like yours free of charge. You can take it now.

Text 6

W: What‘s going on between you and Charlie? Did you have a fight or something?

M: No. But I can‘t stand him anymore! He‘s the worst roommate I‘ve ever had! He never cleans up after

himself, and he‘s always listening to loud music when I try to get some sleep.

W: Why don‘t you have a heart-to-heart talk with him?

M: I tried, but it didn‘t work. Maybe you can talk to him? After all, you‘re his good friend.

Text 7

M: Hi, Sue. It‘s me.

W: Well, hello. Where have you been all day, Steve? Mr. Smith asked me this morning where you were, but he didn‘t seem to be looking for you or anything.

M: What did you say?

W: I told him that I didn‘t k now. He seemed very busy, as managers always are. Are you OK?

M: I‘m sorry I didn‘t call you this morning. I‘ve had a cold since Saturday. I haven‘t eaten much these days, and it has made me feel really weak. But I‘ll probably be there tomorrow.

W: All rig ht. We‘ll go on a business trip next week. And don‘t worry. You should go see a doctor, Steve. M: Thanks, but I‘m getting better now.

W: Take care, then. Bye.

M: Bye-bye, Sue.

Text 8

W: OK, tell me about yourself.

M: Well, last year in school, I played on the football team. It kept me busy, but I learned to manage my time. And also, it has been a great experience in learning how to work on the team with other players.

W: How would your teachers describe you?

M: My teachers would say I work hard to get my ho mework done on time, and I‘m not afraid to ask for help if I need it. They‘d also tell you I am friendly to my classmates.

W: Well, why should I hire you over the other eight students?

M: I think I am the very person you can rely on. I‘ll arrive to work on time and do the best I can on the job. Besides, I‘ve done volunteer work, and now I‘d like to gain actual work experience. If you hire me, you‘ll get someone who is always willing to learn.

Text 9

M: Hi, Susan. How are you? I‘ve been wondering when I‘d ru n into you. What are you busy with?

M: Maybe I could give you some advice. Firstly, you‘d better divide them into different groups. Who a re the people that are your friends as well as your workmates? And who are the people who you do not know well but you see pretty much daily?

W: OK. Then what should I do?

M: For the friends, you want to get them personal gifts. Do they like chocolate?

W: This is what I always give. But I know Mary is on a diet.

M: Does she like fruit or coffee? Anyway, think of a gift that you know your friend likes.

W: Well, I think fruit is helpful to keep fit. How about the rest of them?

M: Leave cards in their mailboxes or on their desks.

Text 10

M: Hello, everyone. My topic today is about the power of a smile. There are a number of sayings about the power of a smile —―Peace begins with a smile.‖ ―A smile means ?Welcome‘ everywhere.‖ ―Life is short, but a smile only takes a second.‖ All good advice, but it may not be as simp le as that. According to new research, if you want to make a good impression when you meet people, it‘s not just that you smile; it‘s how you smile. The study was carried out by the GO group, a business support organization in Scotland, in the UK. They loo ked at people‘s responses to different smiles. They found that the responses differ greatly. Through this study, they say people should avoid three types of smiles. The first is the ―Top Fan‖ — very wide, all teeth showing… possible evidence that you can have too much of a good thing. Then there is the ―Big Freeze‖ —a fixed smile that looks practiced and insincere. Finally comes ―The Robot‖ — a small, thin smile lacking in warmth. The group also warns against smiling too quickly, saying it can make you look false. The best smile, they say, is slower… and flows naturally across the whole face.
