M: I have actually not criticized SV nor made a big deal about the Valley’s center-of-the-universe attitude. I have been trying to make the point that I believe there is life on other planets.
W: Champions of Silicon Valley see it as the world’s best ecosystem for tech startups. In your view, is this still true?
M: It is one of the best places because of the quality of schools, the number of successful people who hung around and seeded others to be successful, and other reasons. Again, I hope that other places can begin to build these required ecosystems, so we begin to see more centers of excellence springing up around the world.
W: How has the connected world changed the opportunities for businessmen in remote locations?
M: In the old days, it was very hard to get a voice or have that voice heard. That is the single greatest barrier to entry. Today, a free block, or a good service or idea, can get noticed and take off.
W: How do you see investment opportunities change because of the connected world?
M: Companies have to think globally from the perspective of resources, customers, etc. This is important because with technology and a global infrastructure, making it big might mean making it big in the UK, New Zealand, and Canada. Questions 23 to 25 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
23. What is the purpose of the man’s world tour?

Passage One

Lying in the sun on a rock, the cougar saw Jeb and his son, Tom, before they saw it. Jeb put his bag down quickly and pulled his jacket open with both hands, making himself look big to the cougar. It worked. The cougar hesitated, ready to attack Jeb, but ready to forget the whole thing, too.
Jeb let go of his jacket, grasped Tom and held him across his body, making a cross. Now the cougar’s enemy looked even bigger, and it rose up, ready to move away, but unfortunately Tom got scared and struggled free of Jeb.
“Tom, no!” shouted his father.
But Tom broke and ran and that’s the last thing you do with a cougar. The second Tom broke free, Jeb threw himself on the cougar, just as it jumped from the rock. They hit each other in mid-air and both fell. The cougar was on Jeb in a flash, forgetting about Tom, which was what Jeb wanted.
Cougars are not as big as most people think and a determined man stands a chance, even with just his fists. As the cougar’s claws got into his left shoulder, Jeb swung his fist at its eyes and hit hard. The animal howled and put its head back. Jeb followed up with his other fist. Then out of the corner of his eye, Jeb saw Tom. The boy was running back to help his father.
“Knife, Tom!” shouted Jeb.
The boy ran to his father’s bag, while Jeb started shouting as well as hitting, to keep the cougar’s attention away from Tom. Tom got the knife and ran over to Jeb. The cougar was moving its head in and out, trying to find a way through the wall Jeb was making out of his arms. Tom swung with the knife, into the cougar’s back. It howled horribly and ran off into the mountains.
The whole fight had taken about thirty seconds. Questions 26 to 29 are based on the passage you have just heard.

Passage Two

I arrived at my mother’s home for our Monday family dinner. The smells of food flew over from the kitchen. My mother was pulling out quilt after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their beauties. She was preparing for a quilt show at the Elmhurst Church. When we began to fold and put them back into the boxes, I noticed something at the bottom of one box. I pulled it out. “What is this?” I asked.
“Oh?” Mom said, “That’s Mama’s quilt.”
I spread the quilt. It looked as if a group of school children had pieced it together: irregular designs, childish pictures, a crooked line on the right.
“Grandmother made this?” I said, surprised. My grandmother was a master at making quilts. This certainly didn’t look like any of the quilts she had made.
“Yes, right before she died. I brought it home with me last year and made some changes,” she said. “I’m still working on it. See, this is what I’ve done so far.”
I looked at it more closely. She had made straight a crooked line. In the center of the quilt, she had stitched(缝) a piece of cloth with these words: “My mother made many quilts. She didn’t get all lines straight. But I think this is beautiful. I want to see it finished. Her last quilt.”
“Oh, this is so nice, Mom,” I said. It occurred to me that by completing my grandmother’s quilt, my mother was honoring her own mother. I realized, too, that I held in my hands a family treasure. It started with the loving hands of one woman, and continued with the loving hands of another.
Questions 30 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard.

Passage Three
She,a less upper-class accent,Her speeches, accents and social classes表明,短文与口音和社会地位的关系有关。

The Queen’s English is now sounding less upper-class, a scientific study of the Queen’s Christmas broadcasts had found. Researchers have studied each of her messages to the Commonwealth countries since 1952 to find out the change in her pronunciation from the noble Upper Received to the Standard Received.
Jonathan Harrington, a professor at Germany’s University of Munich, wanted to discover whether accent changes recorded over the past half-century would take place within one person. “As far as I know, there just is nobody else for whom there is this sort of broadcast records,” he said.
He said the noble way of pronouncing vowels had gradually lost ground as the noble upper-class accent over the past years. “Her accent sounds slightly less noble than it did 50 years ago. But these are very, very small and slow changes that we don’t notice from year to year.”
“We may be able to relate it to changes in the social classes.” he told The Daily Telegraph, a British newspaper. “In 1952 she would have been heard saying ‘thet men in the bleck het’. Now it would be ‘that man in the black hat’. Similarly, she would have spoken of ‘the citay’ and ‘dutay’, rather than ‘citee’ and ‘dutee’, and ‘hame’ rather than ‘home’. In the 1950s she would have been ‘lorst’, but by the 1970s ‘lost’.”
The Queen’s broadcast is a personal message to the Commonwealth countries. Each Christmas, the 10-minute broadcast is put on TV at 3 p.m. in Britain as many families are recovering from their traditional turkey lunch. Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.
33. Why were the Queen’s broadcasts chosen for the study?

W: Welcome to our program, Mr. Smith.
M: Thank you.
W: Mr. Smith, how long have you been a police officer?
M: I’ve been a police officer for thirty years.
W: Thirty years. And you’ve had different types of assignments on the police force, I guess.
M: Yeah, I’ve done everything from patrol to undercover work to detective work, and now I’m supervising investigations.
W: Mr. Smith, I think most people would say that being a police officer is a very stressful job. Would you agree?
M: Yes, it’s definitely a stressf

ul job. But it depends on your assignment.
W: So, what’s probably the most stressful job you can have?
M: I’d say patrol is the most stressful assignment.
W: That’s interesting! In what way?
M: Well, I guess the biggest part of the stress is the fear factor, the fear of the unknown.
W: What do you mean, Mr. Smith?
M: Well, in patrol work, you don’t know from moment to moment who you are talking to or what their reaction is going to be to justify your presence. Let’s say, for example, a patrol officer stops someone for a traffic violation. It seems as though that would be a very low-stress situation.
W: Yes, it is a very low-stress situation.
M: But the truth is, there are more police officers injured during a routine stop.
W: Really?
M: Really! That’s why all police officers are taught from the very beginning to be aware of their surroundings: people back over policemen, people shoot policemen, people jump out at policemen — different kinds of things. So that’s probably the most stressful time.
W: I see. Let’s take a break and then we’ll move on to our next topic.

W: Are you aware that it’s only available to married graduate students and their families?
M: Yes. I think my wife and I may qualify since she’s still in graduate school. But I was wondering whether there were any other requirements.
W: Well, unless you have more than one child, you have to have a combined annual income that’s less than 5,000 dollars.
M: I’m working as a part-time research assistant so that’s no problem. But right now we’re living with my wife’s parents. Does that mean we have to include their income too?
W: Not necessarily. Why don’t you stop by our office so I can give you some forms to fill out and explain everything in more detail?
M: That sounds like a good idea. Would tomorrow morning be all right?
W: I think the afternoon might be better. You know it can be pretty crazy around here on a Friday morning.
M: All right then. I’ll try to make it in the afternoon. Is there anyone special I should ask for?

Section B
Passage One
The right of choice,products,purchasing decisions,variety of choices等可知,短文与商品购买的决定有关。

Almost every day we come across situations in which we have to make decisions one way or another. Choice, we are given to believe, is a right. But for a good many people in the world, in rich and poor countries, choice is a luxury, something wonderful but hard to get, not a right. And for those who think they are exercising their right to make choices, the whole s

ystem is merely an illusion, a false idea created by companies and advertiser, hoping to sell their products.
The endless choice gives birth to anxiety in people’s lives. Buying something as basic as a coffee pot is not exactly simple. Easy access to a wide range of everyday goods leads to a sense of powerlessness in many people, ending in the shopper giving up and walking away, or just buying an unsuitable item that is not really wanted. Recent studies in England have shown that many electrical goods bought in almost every family are not really needed. More difficult decision-making is then either avoided or trusted into the hands of the professionals, lifestyle instructors, or advisors.
It is not just the availability of the goods that is the problem, but the speed with which new types of products come on the market. Advances in design and production help quicken the process. Products also need to have a short lifespan so that the public can be persuaded to replace them within a short time. The typical example is computers, which are almost out-of-date once they are bought. This indeed makes selection a problem. Gone are the days when one could just walk with case into a shop and buy one thing; no choice, no anxiety. Questions 26 to 29 are based on the passage you have just heard.
26. What do we learn from the passage?
The endless choice gives birth to anxiety in people’s lives. Buying something as basic as a coffee pot is not exactly simple,由此可知,选择并不简单,故答案为[B]。
27. Why do more choices of goods give rise to anxiety?
The endless choice gives birth to anxiety in people’s lives和Easy access to a wide range of everyday goods leads to a sense of powerlessness in many people,也就是说,商品的种类太多了,顾客都挑花眼了,很难做出选择,从而产生了忧虑, [B]中的the broad range of items对应短文中的a wide range of everyday goods,故为答案。
【点睛】问题中的more choices of goods give rise to anxiety是对短文中The endless choice gives birth to anxiety的同义转述。
28. What does the speaker want to prove by using computers as an example?
The typical example is computers, which are almost out-of-date once they are bought,该例子是为了证明前面的话:Products also need to have a short lifespan so that the public can be persuaded to replace them within a short time,也就是说是为了证明新设计的商品搅乱了市场,使人们的选择变得更加困难,故答案为[C]。
29. What is this passage mainly about?
【解析】选[A]。
