A good hiking trip should be planned out ahead of time. Whether it is a hike on a mountain trail or through the woods, an enjoyable hiking trip can easily turn into a dangerous situation if safety is not considered well. North Mountain State Park recommends hikers consider the following tips before hitting any trails:

Make a copy of your itinerary to give to a family member or a friend. Make sure that someone close to you knows where you are and how long you will be gone.

Wear a good pair of hiking boots or strong athletic shoes. The right shoes will keep you safe, warm, and comfortable.

Prepare for various types of weather conditions. Check the forecast before you leave; take along sunglasses and extra clothing (e.g., a hat and /or a jacket for a day hike).

Pack plenty of food and water. Consider how long your hike will be and pack accordingly.

Pack basic and necessary supplies. Bring a first-aid kit, a flashlight, a pocket knife, a map of the area (if available), and a compass. You may need other supplies, such as matches, depending on how long your hike will be.

Determine what time the sun sets. This information is available in most local newspapers. Most people become lost after nightfall, so it is important to know this information.

Stay on properly marked trails. Stay on established trails to decrease the chances of becoming lost. Staying on established trails also lowers the risk of doing harm to rare and endangered plants.

Carry a whistle(哨子). Using a loud whistle is a good way to call attention to your location if you get lost.

Keep an eye out for wildlife. Do not approach animals in the wild, even if they seem friendly. The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission (WSPRC) manages a diverse system of more than 120 parks. The 90-year-old park system, which receives nearly 48 million visits a year, ranks 4th nationally in day-use attendance, 10th in overnight attendance, and the WSPRC has a smaller budget than most states.

I experienced more than I was able to handle as a boy. My father was an alcoholic, which resulted in an absolute mess in our family including physical abuse in my parents’ marriage. I was five years old when my parents divorced. My mother worked day and night to support the family. This left me with a lot of time by myself. I never received any encouragement to try out for sports or after-school activities. Because of this, I never really thought that I could do it. I thought that without a parent’s company, support and encouragement it was hard for a teen to set up structure

for themselves. Had I experienced the love from both of my parents, I would have been able to learn how to make real friends and how to build confidence, teamwork and good decision-making skills.

But that was not my reality. Reality was that I fell in with the wrong crowd. I made some bad friends. As I met more people who partied, took drugs and alcohol, I began to follow them. Before I knew it, all I cared about was how I was going to get high.

My mom was angry and let me know how much I was letting her down but I didn’t know how to stop and I couldn’t picture my life without the drugs. I protected my using drugs at any cost. I was angry at her because it seemed as if I was not important to her. The one thing about my mom was that she did not give up. I not only needed treatment to fight my addiction, but needed help to remove what I had been carrying around for years. Professionals were able to help us heal together. They were able to help my mom learn how to push me when I needed drugs, and communicate with an angry teenager.

We didn’t take the route that most mothers and sons take in life, but we are proof that addiction doesn’t have to tear a family apart forever.

One half of the brain remains on high alert during the first night of sleep in a new space.

Over the course of three experiments on 35 young, healthy volunteers, researchers measured brain activity during two nights of sleep. They found that part of the left side of the brain remained more active than the right side only on the first night, specifically during a deep sleep stage.

“When you sleep in a new place for the first time, a part of one side of the brain seems to stay awake, so you could wake up faster if necessar y,” said senior study author Yuka Sasaki of Brown University.

While this may be bad news for business travelers who regularly make brief overnight trips, it may not be as troublesome for people who go away for longer periods of time, Sasaki added by email.

To see how being in a strange place affects sleep, Sasaki and colleagues performed a series of lab tests on their subjects.

When they stimulated(刺激)the left side of the brain with sounds in the right ear during deep sleep on the first night, that led to greater possibility of waking and faster action upon waking, than if sounds were played in the left ear to affect the right side of the brain. On the second night, there wasn’t any difference in reactions to tests between the left and right sides of the brain, even during deep sleep.This suggests that there is a first-night-only effect specifically in one side of the brain during deep sleep, the authors conclude.

One limitation of the new study is its focus on healthy volunteers, which means the results may not apply to people with sleep disorders, the authors note.

While it’s possible that the findings may explain poor sleep among frequent travelers, the study wasn’t designed to test whether these “first night effects” continue to happen to people every time they hit the road, said Patrick Finan, a researcher at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.
