(2019·石家庄模拟)Many years ago, when we first went to Canada,we were driving through Montana with our two children. We thought we would find a motel(汽车旅馆) on the way and had not made a booking. As it was getting late,we started looking for a motel, only to find that all were booked, which worried me sick.

Finally, around 9 p.m.,we stopped at a gas station to fill up the gas tank.My husband asked for a phone book and told the woman at the counter that we were trying to find a motel. He tried for 15 minutes. When he was unsuccessful, the woman,Linda, said she and her family lived nearby and would be happy if we spent the night at her home.

My husband was stunned by her offer. She called her son to direct us,since she had to hold the fort at the gas station till midnight.

When we reached her home, her husband greeted us.He took out two sleeping bags for the children. He invited us to have coffee and chat while we waited for his wife. When she came back,we asked if we could slip away in the morning so as not to disturb them. They said we were now guests and we would have to have breakfast with them.

We woke up to a table set for breakfast. They made a mountain of pancakes and bacon. We ate breakfast, and when we were leaving,my husband asked if he could offer some payment.

They insisted we were their guests. We left moved by their spirit of hospitality(好客).We were amazed that they would take in a family of total strangers from a different country. We kept in touch for many years.Over the years,we've lost touch with them, but have never forgotten their kindness.

It's not just kids who are overdoing screen time.Parents are often just as guilty of spending too much time checking smart phones and e-mails.And the consequences for their children can be troubling.

Dr.Jenny Radesky is a pediatrician(儿科医生) specializing in child development. When she worked at a clinic in a high-tech Seattle neighborhood,Radesky started noticing how often parents ignored their kids in favor of a mobile device.Radesky was so concerned that she decided to study the behavior.

After relocating to Boston Medical Center, she and two other researchers spent one summer observing 55 different groups of parents and young children eating at fast food restaurants.“Many of the caregivers pulle d out a mobile device right away,”she says.“They looked at it,scrolled on it and typed for most of the meal, only putting it down occasionally.”

This was not a scientific study.Radesky is quick to point out.It was more like anthropological(人类学的) observation, complete with detailed field notes.Forty of the 55 parents used a mobile device during the meal, and many, she says, were more absorbed in the device than in the kids.

Radesky says that's a big mistake, because face-to-face interactions are the primary way children learn.“They learn language, they learn about their own emotions, and they learn how to regulate them,”she says.“They learn by watching us how to have a conversation, and how to read other people's facial expressions. And if that is not happening, children are missing out on important development milestones(里程碑).”

In the research for her book,Steiner-Adair interviewed 1,000 children between the ages of 4 and 18,asking them about their parents' use of mobile devices. The language that came up over and over and over again, she says, was“sad, mad, angry and lonely.”Steiner-Adair says we don't know exactly how much these mini moments of disconnection between a parent and child affect the child in the long term. But based on the stories she hears,Steiner-Adair suggests that parents think twice before picking up a mobile device when they're with their kids.

必修4 Unit 1 A STUDENT OF AFRICAN WILDLIFE It is 5:45 am and the sun is just rising over Gombe National Park in East Afri ca. Following Jane's way of studying chimps, our group are all going to visit them in the forest. Jane has studied these families of chimps for many years and helped people understand how much they behave like humans. Watching a family of chi mps wake up is our first activity of the day. This means going back to the place where we left the family sleeping in a tree the night before. Everybody sits and wa its in the shade of the trees while the family begins to wake up and move off. Th en we follow as they wander into the forest. Most of the time, chimps either feed or clean each other as a way of showing love in their family. Jane warns us that our group is going to be very tired and dirty by the afternoon and she is right. Ho wever, the evening makes it all worthwhile. We watch the mother chimp and her b abies play in the tree. Then we see them go to sleep together in their nest for the night. We realize that the bond between members of a chimp family is as strong as in a human family. Nobody before Jane fully understood chimp behaviour. She spent years observi ng and recording their daily activities. Since her childhood she had wanted to work with animals in their own environment. However, this was not easy. When she firs t arrived in Gombe in 1960, it was unusual for a woman to live in the forest. Only after her mother came to help her for the first few months was she allowed to be gin her project. Her work changed the way people think about chimps. For exampl e, one important thing she discovered was that chimps hunt and eat meat. Until th en everyone had thought chimps ate only fruit and nuts. She actually observed chi mps as a group hunting a monkey and then eating it. She also discovered how ch

The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of CanadA. In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people:as we get older, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesight. Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on,the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people’s attitude towards them. Disabled people face many physical barriers.Next time you go shopping or to work or to visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers:

如:suggest(建议), insist(坚持要求),demand(要求)、ask(请求)等后接的宾语从句中都 要用虚拟语气。善于归纳近义词、同义词,如:在复习join的用法时,能够联系join in,take part in,join sb in归纳复习之后,要做 对应练习。

How will you go there? Are you prepared for /nervous about it? 2)做笔记,抓关键信息 前面的英文短片部分和三问部分是所有听力信息的输入部分,这两部分要做好听力笔记。 (Is the library open on weekends?) 计算机回答 (Y es. It‘s open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekends and it opens one hour earlier from Monday to Friday. 播放2遍)
