Calvin waited outside Trudy’s bedroom. Then it happened—a scream, a very loud scream. Calvin ran to his room and dived into bed.

He heard Mama coming down the hall.

“Did you do this?” his mother asked. Calvin looked out from under the covers. His mother stood over him, holding a rubber spider.

“Then you apologize (道歉).”

Calvin dropped his head. “Sorry Trudy,” he mut tered (嘟囔).

Little Tommy was doing very badly in math. His parents had tried everything—tutors (家庭教师), cards, special learning centers—in short, everything they could think of. Finally they took Tommy to a catholic (天主教的) school.

After the first day, little Tommy came home with a very serious look on his face. He didn’t kiss his mother hello. Instead, he went straight to his room and started studying. Books and papers were spread (铺开) out all over the room and little Tommy was hard at work. His mother was surprised. She called him down to dinner and as soon as he finished eating, he went back to his room, without a word. In no time he was back hitting the books as hard as before. This went on for some time, day after day while the mother tried to understand what was happening.

Finally, little Tommy brought home his report card. He quietly put it on the table and went up to his room and hit the books. His mom looked at it and to her surprise, little Tommy got an A in math. She could no longer hold her curiosity (好奇心). She went to his room and asked, “Son, what was it? Was it the nuns (修女)?”

Little Tommy looked at her and s hook his head, “No.”

“Well then,” she asked again. “WHAT was it?”

Little Tommy looked at her and said, “Well, on the first day of school, when I saw that man nailed (钉) to the plus sign (加号), I knew they weren’t joking.”

1. W hy did Tommy’s parents send him to a catholic school?

A. Because he could eat well there.

B. Because he could earn more about nuns.

C. Because his parents wanted him to do better in his math.

D. Because his parents didn’t want him to learn math any more.

2. Tommy’s mother felt surprised that his son _______.

A. was still the same as usual

B. ate so much at dinner

C. kissed her hello after school

D. worked hard but said little

3. “Hitting the books” means “_______” in Chinese.

A. 用功

B. 捶书

C. 发泄

D. 振作

4. The last sentence in the passage shows that _______.

A. Tommy felt sorry for the mail

B. Tommy was afraid of being nailed

C. Tommy didn’t like the plus sign

D. Tommy liked playing jokes on others

5. From the passage, we can infer (推断) that _______.

A. teachers should be strict with their students

B. mistaking (误解) might do good sometimes

C. a catholic school is much better than other ones

D. nuns are good at helping children with their math

After the first day, little Tommy came home…didn’t kiss his mother hello…was hard at work…without a word.

3. 选A。 Finally, little Tommy brought home his report card. He quietly put it on the table and went up to his room and hit the books这个句子的语境,可知hit the books的意思是“用功”。

Well, on the first day of school, when I saw that man nailed (钉) to the plus sign (加号), I knew they weren’t joking.

Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save you life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts.

The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average(平均高度的) person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.

Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leaked(渗) into the room.

如Adela、Manchester、NATO。

When a man was walking by some elephants, he suddenly stopped He wondered why these huge animals were being held only by a small rope tied to their front legs. No chains, no cages. It was clear that the elephants could break the rope at any time, but for sonic reason, they did not. He saw a trainer nearby and asked why the animals just stood there and didn't try to get away. "Well," the trainer said, "when they were very young and much smaller, we used the same rope to keep them from running away. At that age, it's enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break tile rope. They believe it can still hold them, so they never try to break free." The man was surprised. These animals could break flee whenever they wanted, but because they believed they couldn't, they were stuck right where they were. How many of us go through life like the elephants-holding onto the belief that we cannot do something simply because we failed at it once before? Failure is a part of learning. If we failed once, it doesn't mean we can never succeed. If we try again and again, maybe we will succeed one day. So don't be afraid of failure and keep on trying. (1)Why did the elephants never try to break the rope after they grew up? A. Because they liked being tied. B. Because they were too weak to break it. C. Because they didn't want to break it.

2019中考英语:阅读理解 (限时:30分钟) A Have you ever been on a student exchange program? How useful was it? We asked three people for their opinions. Ellen I spent 8 days in Germany when I was studying for my Level A. I went to school every day, and spent the evenings with a family. It was great because I had to speak German all the time. However, the most useful thing was that I was paying more attention to communicating in the language, instead of speaking perfectly correct German. I was really glad that people could understand what I was saying. I’d certainly introduce it to other students studying languages. Frank I went on an exchange with my class for a week in Japan. Before the exchange, I thought my understanding of grammar was pretty good, but I had much trouble in listening and speaking. So, what I thought most meaningful was that I had no choice but to use everyday language skills, rather than the language from books. If I had the oppor tunity, I’d certainly take part in another language exchange. Alice I took part in a French exchange. It lasted two weeks, and I stayed with my exchange family in a small town just outside Paris. I’m quite a shy person, so in the first few days, I was kind of nervous, but then it was fine. I love French and my French has always been good. But the exchange really helped develop my speaking skills, and made me a much more confident(自信的) person. It felt great to be able to talk with French people. I also found that everyone who took part in the exchange did a lot better in their end-of-year exams. 1.How long did Frank stay in Japan? A.For a week.

阅读理解 "Without music, life would be a mistake, "famous German philosopher(哲学家)Friedrich Nietzsche said over a century ago. Music is a big part of our lives. But in recent years, some American schools have cut music classes to control budgets(预算). For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired over 1, 000 teachers. Among them, 10 percent of the teachers taught art or music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and the UK, music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like science, math and history. That's partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn't tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus on subjects that are tested more often. However, learning music is beneficial(有益的)in many ways. When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth K. Guilmartin of Music Together, an early childhood music development program. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode(解码)them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time. Music has a special connection with science as well. You can see that many scientists are good at playing music:Einstein played the violin and German physicist Max Planck was talented in playing the piano. (1)Some schools in the US cut music classes, because ____. A. they were too difficult to learn B. students in the US weren't interested in music C. the schools wanted to control budgets D. there weren't enough music teachers in the US (2)In Paragraph 2, what does the underlined word "them" refer to(指代)? A. Students in Chicago. B. Public schools. C. Parents in Chicago. D. Fired teachers.(3)How many scientists who are good at playing music are mentioned in this passage? A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four. (4)What's the writer's opinion according to this passage? A. Music is as simple as it looks. B. Music classes should be cut in some schools. C. Music is a big part of our lives. D. Music isn't a very important life skill for us. 根据some American schools have cut music classes to control budgets可知美国的一些学校停课,因为学校想控制预算,故选C。 Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired over 1, 000
