A rainbow is one of the most beautiful sights in nature, and man has wondered what makes it happen for a long time. Someone thought it was a reflection(反射) of the sun’s light by the rain, and that was not true！

A rainbow is simply a great curved spectrum, not a straight one, or band of colors , caused by the stopping of light which has passed through raindrops. The raindrops act as prisms.
A rainbow is seen only during light rains. When rain is falling and the sun is shining at the same time .You have to be in the middle , the sun behind you , the rain in front of you , or you can’t see a rainbow! The sun shines over your shoulder into raindrops, which break up the light into spectrum, or band of colors. The sun , your eyes, and the center of the arc(弧)of the rainbow must all be in a straight line!
If the sun is too high in t he sky, it’s impossible to make such a straight line. That’s why rainbows are seen only in the early morning or later afternoon.
