About me and the research survey:

My name is Tania Miletic. I am a PhD student with the University of Queensland. I am interested in learning more about Chinese perspectives on peace and conflict. I have studied peace and conflict approaches in many countries in Asia, (having worked mostly in South East Asia over the past 7 years) and for my PhD studies, I am interested in Chinese opinions and views about important conflicts they face in China today and opinions about some common conflict scenarios.

Conflicts are common across many parts of life, they can span from the personal, national to the global scale. In the field of Peace and Conflict Studies, there is less knowledge about non-Western understandings of conflict and especially China. China plays a large role in the world today and so I think there is a need for shared understandings between people and countries in the region and to make the discipline of Conflict Resolution more culturally relevant in Asia. Through using this survey and an interview, I would like to learn more from you about Chinese perspectives on conflict issues and how best to approach conflict.

I have been given permission and ethical approval by my Australian University – the University of Queensland- and invite you to participate in my study voluntarily. I would like to invite you and kindly take some time (approximately one hour and a half) to discuss some of these issues with me. There are no right or wrong answers because I am only interested in your own views and thoughts. The Survey I use is attached. I like to do the interview in person.

To begin I will ask some questions about you (not your name as this information is confidential) and then some questions in which we will discuss your thoughts on some different conflict scenarios. You are free to add or discuss anything that comes to mind. I take notes to help me accurately remember what you have said but they are for my use only. I will not share them as they are only for my academic research purposes. To help me make notes I also like to record our discussion. I will only use this for making my notes. If you would prefer I didn?t record our discussion please let me know and I will only take written notes. Our discussion is in English but you can write words in Chinese that I can translate later if that is better for you. If I am not clear please ask me to explain my questions. You are able to ask questions or stop our interview at any time. These are the questions I will ask:

A. Basic Information

Sex: F/M Age:_____ University Major:_______________________ University:_____________ Employment:______________

Place of birth:_________________

Parent/s current place of residence:________________

Languages spoken:____________________

B. Hand Activity

I would like to know a little bit about you. If we draw a hand –like this [draw outline of hand]– I would like you write five things about yourself that you think are important characteristics about …who you are?.

In English or using Chinese characters please write:

“On each finger please list an important part of who you are”

You can use any labels or descriptions you like. That means y ou can use words, Chinese characters, symbols, drawings whatever. [If needed, here are some examples of aspects of identity: such as personality trait, values, - student, woman, kind, husband, etc].

Can you briefly say something about each of these?

C. Conflict meaning

As I mentioned, my research is about conflict. When I say the word …conflict? what do you think of? What does …conflict? mean to you?

[explore any related words, etc, any other words that come up – harmony etc] If not mentioned, ask if conflict can be …good? also. Ask for written characters to

distinguish different words/ meanings.

D. Conflict Scenarios

Conflicts can from daily life or a range of situations. Here are some examples of conflicts. I will read each one out and can read from the paper also. After each example, I would like to discuss your thoughts of the conflict scenario.

“what do you think the conflict is about?”

[explore for issue, parties involved, how it might be managed and why] Conflict Vignettes

What happened – it is a straightforward traffic accident? What else do you want to know – how should this be managed and by whom?

What do you think of the way this incident was managed? What do you think of this situation? Can you share some of your reflections?

D. About China context

What do you think are the most important conflict issues in China today?

We have talked about some different issues (e.g. relationship problems, development, etc) Please take a moment to think about conflicts that concerns you. What do you think are the most important issues?

Are there ways to improve conflicts not escalating or being resolved??

China is changing very rapidly.

How might that affect the way conflicts arise or the way they are managed in the future, say in 5 years time?

Where will you be then?

What might your role be in managing conflicts like these?

Do you think there are particularly Chinese ways for managing conflict? What are these?

In the Chinese context - who is best placed to manage conflicts like the ones we discussed?

Has our conversation raised any thoughts, or questions for you?

Thank you for your time and thoughts. I understand speaking in a second language can be difficult. You have done very well and I appreciate your help with my research. I can send you a copy of my notes of what you have said.

You can check if you want to add or clarify these.

If after this interview, you would like to add any comments or clarify anything we discussed please email me your thoughts: https://www.wendangku.net/doc/bf18883420.html,etic@https://www.wendangku.net/doc/bf18883420.html,.au or

taniamiletic@https://www.wendangku.net/doc/bf18883420.html,

Thank you!
