It is a solemn and honorable occupation to be coast guards because those heroic people are engaged in seizing smugglers for the sake of guarding the country and comforting the people. The traffic problem has always been a grave concern during the urban development. Take Shanghai for example, there are approximately 300,000 taxis, not to say of an ever increasing number of private cars. The expansion of the automobile manufacturing and the growth of consumer demand often correlate with environmental pollution. Meanwhile, although the highway and railway transportation system has already taken shape in Shanghai, the car accidents have never decreased significantly. Cars frequently get stuck even on vaulted highways. The promise of eliminating all sorts of traffic problems seems difficult to fulfill. Yet with reasonable planning and with the establishment of the related policy and regulations, the problem is likely to be alleviated.

After more than two decades of economic reform and opening to the outside world, Shanghai has been recognized as a rising internationalized metropolis as well as an immigrant city. Different cultures and conceptions come into conflict and finally fuse with each other, which has shaped Shanghai’s multicultural society with the uniqueness that “the sea accepts all rivers”. People learn here to look at issues from the perspective of other people, to attach importance to cooperation, and to let different opinions play a constructive rather than destructive role. When we arrived there, what came first to our eyes were the flamingos on the ground behind the gate, now watching people coming and going in silence, now clattering here and there. On our way, we saw butterflies flying in flocks and swans gliding on the lake. We also saw such animals as tigers, kangaroos, giraffes, rhinoceros, some of which are even exotic. What’s more, the scenery in the park was also spectacular. Both Linda and I thought it was worthy of a visit.

1. Today, as in every other day of the year, more than 3,000 U.S. adolescents will smoke their first cigarette on their way to becoming regular smokers as adults. During their lifetime, it can be expected that of these 3,000 about 23 will be murdered, 30 will die in traffic accidents, and nearly 750 will be killed by a smoking-related disease. The number of deaths attributed to cigarette smoking outweighs all other factors, whether voluntary or involuntary, as a cause of death. Since the late 1970s, when daily smoking among high school seniors reached 30 percent, smoking rates among youth have declined. While the decline is impressive, several important issues must be raised. First, in the past several years, smoking rates among youth have declined very little. Second, in the late 1970s, smoking among male high school seniors exceeded that among female by nearly 10 percent. The statistic is reversing. Third, several recent studies have indicate high school dropouts have excessively high smoking rates, as much as 75 percent . Finally, though significant declines in adolescent smoking have occurred in the past decade, no definite reasons for the decline exist. Within this context, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) began its current effort to determine the most effective measures to reduce smoking levels among youth. 1. According to the author, the deaths among youth are mainly caused by _____. A. traffic accidents B. smoking-related diseases C. murder D. all of these 2. Every day there are over _____young people who will become regular smoker. A. 75 B. 23 C. 30 D. 3,000 3. By "dropout" (in paragraph 3) the author means______. A. students who failed the examination

If you ask me, taking a second major isn’t good for every undergraduate. In my freshman year as an English major, I took economics as my minor. By all odds, I was the most hardworking student in my class. But try as I might to meet the requirements of the two different subjects, I still couldn’t do well enough to pass all the exams. Given that the study of economics required a good command of mathematics, I had to spend so much time on math that I neglected my English major. Failing English Literature and Macroeconomics in the second semester sounded the alarm for me. Thiswas the first time I did not pass a course in my life, which had greatly sapped my confidence. Although I was not a man who would easily bow to fate, as the summer break came to a close, I decided to give up economics for fear that I would fail in both subjects. Now that I had only one subject to attend to, everything seemed to be on the right track again. What you wear seems to dictate the kind of person you are supposed to be. Take primary school and high school students for example. One of the hard and fast rules they have to observe is that they must wear uniforms at school. There is no doubt that school uniforms would not have achieved their currency without a symbolic correlation between the uniformity of clothes and the students’ conformity to some common code of conduct. However, after years of school life, there is always a backlash secretly n ursed in the students’ mind against the ubiquitous uniform which suppresses the expression of individuality. To compensate for this loss, students try to hunt for more casual and popular clothes and wear them on weekends. It is not until they start university, however, that they can really enjoy the freedom of dress, an anarchy associated with the cultivation of creativity and the encouragement of the free expression of ideas and talents. But this situation won’t obtain for long. After a relatively short time of liberty, they may experience again the revived pressure of dress code as soon as they become professionals. When it comes to the effects of the current economic downturn, the decrease of student activities is a good case in point. To enliven campus life, the university is always willing to carve out money for activities organized by student clubs and societies, but such sponsorships have been pared down this year because of huge budget cut. Apparently, student organizations need to weather their own financial crisis if they want to recover from their current state of inactiveness. Some suggest enrolling more club members, on the ground that the consequent increase of membership fees may help them get out of the difficulty. No doubt, if we have more members paying the annual fee, and if we cut back on our daily expenses, we can spare some money for organizing activities. But the bottom line is that the expenses of these activities are in proportion to the number of participants. I’m afraid this won’t be of much help. To boost student activities and to avoid going into the red, we still need to pool our ideas and come up with some other ways of raising money, in lieu of relying only on university grants and membership fees. 2.
