It was the hardest thing I ever had to do as a mother. But I knew I had to

let my daughter,my only child,go.

In a few months,Sophie was going to college. We had so much to be happy about, but I was nervous, too. I knew I had to do something to help myself through the summer.

Sophie had a pack of T-shirts that she wouldn't wear and didn't want to get rid of, so I decided to make a quilt out of them for her bed at college. It focused my energy, and also let me relive some memories.

I tried to work on the quilt when Sophie wasn't home—which turned out to be often. She was very busy with her friends. Even when she was around, her door was shut more than usual. I felt a bit hurt. After all, we didn't have much time together before she went to college. I was already missing her, but she hadn't even left yet!

The day finally came. When we arrived at the college, a wave of emotion swept over me. I tried to hold it back, but Sophie saw it in my face. She took out a beautiful book from her bag. “I made this for you,Mom,” she said. Then I knew why she had been staying behind a closed door that summer. It was an album of photographs documenting the life of our family over the last 17 years.

I broke into tears. Some of it was sadness at having to let her go, but there was joy, too. I

knew that our connection was more powerful than ever, and that we'd always be connected by the love that went into every stitch(针脚) of her quilt and every photo in my album.

When we helped Sophie settle in her dorm, I unfolded the quilt on her bed. For a moment she was speechless. Then she threw her arms around me. “Mom,I love you,” she said.

One of her new friends was calling her outside. Sophie turned, and I let her go.

While researchers have long shown that tall people earn more than their shorter counterparts, it's not only social discrimination that accounts for this inequality—tall people are just smarter than their height-challenged peers,a new study finds.

“As early as age three—before schooling has had a chance to play a role—and throughout childhood, taller children perform significantly better on cognitive tests,” wrote Anne Case and Christina Paxson of Princeton University in a paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

The findings were based primarily on two British studies that followed children born in 1958

and 1970, respectively, through adulthood and a US study on height and occupational choice.

Other studies have pointed to low self-esteem, better health that accompanies greater height, and social discrimination as culprits(罪犯) for lower pay for shorter people.

But researchers Case and Paxson believe the height advantage in the job world is more than just a question of image.

“As adults, taller individuals are more likely to select into higher paying occupations that require more advanced verbal and numerical skills and greater intelligence, for which they earn handsome returns,” they wrote.

For both men and women in the United States and the United Kingdom, a height advantage of four inches equated with a 10 percent increase in wages on average.

But the researchers said the differences in performance crop_up long before the tall people enter the job force. Prenatal care(产前护理) and the time between birth and the age of three are critical periods for determining future cognitive ability and height.

“Prenatal care and prenatal nutrition are just incredibly important, even more so than we already knew,” Case said in an interview.

Since the study's data only included populations in the United Kingdom and the United States, the findings could not be applied to other regions, Case said.

And how tall are the researchers?

They are both about 5 feet 8 inches tall, well above the average height of 5 feet 4 inches for American women.

25.What can be learnt from the study of Anne Case and Christina Paxson is that ________.

A.the reason for lower pay for shorter people is social discrimination

B.taller children perform significantly better on cognitive test

C.tall people earn less than shorter counterparts

D.prenatal care and prenatal nutrition are less important than we already knew

26.Which period is the most important for determining future cognitive ability and height?

A.Between age three and schooling.

B.Between birth and the age of three.

C.The whole childhood.

D.Between 1958 and 1970.

27.The underlined phrase “crop up” in the 8th paragraph is closest in meaning to ________.

28.The best title for this passage would be ________.

A.Tall people earn more than shorter counterparts

B.A study on height and occupational choice

C.The difference between tall people and short people

You can never be too sure these days in the United States of your neighbors or even your customers! Try to keep a low profile(姿态) in your neighborhood:Don't announce to everyone that you are running a home business with thousands of dollars worth of equipment. As much as possible,do not invite clients (客户) or visitors to your home. In fact,I know of some home-based entrepreneurs (企业家) who would rather meet their clients in a neutral ground,e.g. the client's office or even Starbucks.

There are other ways to keep burglars away from your house.

●Keep lights on around your house in the evening s. Light is a natural fright for burglars.

●Invest in a security alarm, particularly if your house is located at a remote spot. Security systems can often bring down the cost of your homeowner's premium(保险费).

●Make sure that all windows and doors are locked and the security alarm turned on before you sleep at night or go out of the house. Avoid keeping house keys in obvious places, such as under the lamp or on top of the doorframe.

●Adding an additional lock will provide extra security when you are home. The dead-lock,sometimes called an “exit only deadbolt” is a deadbolt that does not have an external(外部的) key.It is clearly visible on the door from the outside, but cannot be broken into without destroying the door, frame or lock itself. While this security won't help directly when you aren't home, the visibility may discourage an intruder from trying the door.

●Your door itself should be made of strong materials, such as one-inch thick solid hardwood or heavy metal.

29.The advice given by the writer in the passage focuses on________.

A.how to make your house safe from burglars

B.what to do when your house is broken into

C.how to improve social security in the United States

D.how to run a home business

30.Some home-based entrepreneurs do not invite clients to their home________.

A.to enjoy convenience outside their home

B.for the safety of their property

C.not to let others know about their business

D.in order to avoid being seen by burglars

31.All the following are part of the writer's advice EXCEPT that the

homeowner________.

A.buy a security alarm and turn it on in the evening

B.fix an extra lock on the door from inside

C.have the doors made of solid hardwood or heavy metal

D.keep lights on in all rooms to threaten burglars

32.What does the underlined word “intruder” most probably mean in the passage?

A.Someone who is invited for a visit.

B.Someone who illegally enters the home.

C.Someone who pays regular visits to the home.

D.Someone who tries to destroy the lock.

Is early childhood education really necessary? Early childhood education primarily focuses on learning through playing to develop the child's physical, sensory, communicational and social development. Early childhood education has become a concern of the government, who pushes poor children to be formally trained before they are old enough for kindergarten.

There are good reasons for the government to push early childhood education. Studies have shown that orphaned children who did not receive good care and education become developmentally delayed causing failure in school, and even in life. Further studies show that poor children who take part in Head Start programs are more prepared for school, less likely to end up in Special Education classes, and are less likely to receive public help or go to jail.

There are also negative parts to put a child in formal education programs too early. Time Magazine online explains that “the younger the child, the less his chances of catching up with first-grade work”.I have personally witnessed many children of my generation who went to Head Start programs become frustrated and bored with school before they finished high school. Yet parents have been sure that the earlier the child starts school, the better off he or she is, so they push to start children earlier.

Actually while early formal education of poor children does show great gains in the early elementary years, studies also show that this head start is really a “false start”,as the gains are lost in middle and high school years. It seems that environment is a bigger factor on life's success than early education. Head Start programs have not achieved its original goal in closing the achievement gap in poor and rich middle school children. Perhaps it is time to find other ways to close that gap. 33.The purpose of the government valuing early childhood education is ________.

A.to develop the children's communication

B.to give orphaned children good care and education

C.to get the children prepared for the kindergarten

D.to train the children formally and regularly

34.According to the studies, which of the following is TRUE?

A.Children with good early education may have a rich life.

B.The orphaned children are usually unhappy in their life.

C.Children without early education can do well at school.

D.Head Start programs are helpful to the poor children.

35.The author's attitude towards early childhood education is ________.

A.puzzling B.objective C.indifferent D.approving

One of the greatest stories of rags to riches success is that of Andrew Carnegie, who started life in poverty but became one of the richest men in the world.

Carnegie was born in Scotland in 1835,the son of a weaver. In 1848,the family moved to the United States and at 13 Carnegie began to work in a cotton mill, earning $1.5 per week. About three years later,he found a better job as a telegraph messenger boy. At work, his superiors(上级) were impressed by his abilities and willingness to work hard. In 1853,he gained an office job at the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. This was his first big break. He continued to impress and rose rapidly through the company, gaining mor_and more_responsibility. At the same time,Carnegie loved reading very much and made use of every opportunity to visit the library. He read widely on all subjects, particularly literature.

Carnegie now began to save a little money and, with the help of his employer, began to make some successful investments. He invested in the iron industry and eventually set up in business himself, owning several iron and steel plants. This was where he made his fortune. By the 1890s,the Carnegie Steel Company was the biggest and most profitable business in the world.

Carnegie had always believed that the pursuit(追求) of wealth was never an end in itself. In his view, successful, wealthy people should redistribute their wealth for the benefit of everyone in society. True to his word,in 1901,at the age of 66,he retired from business and devoted the rest of his life to charity work.

Carnegie's lack of formal education and his poor family background clearly didn't put barriers in the way of success. His rapid rise from poverty to wealth was due to his willingness to work hard, his intelligence and good business sense, and his talent for making things happen. He died in 1919 at the age of 83.

36.What can be learnt from the text?

A.Carnegie's employers had a high opinion of him.

B.Carnegie made the investments independently after saving enough money.

C.Carnegie believed that we should try to earn as much money as possible in our life.

D.Carnegie could have been more successful if he had been formally educated.

37.What does “gaining more and more responsibility” in the second paragraph most probably mean?

A.Becoming more and more intelligent.

B.Being promoted to higher ranks.

C.Having a better sense of confidence.

D.Reading more and more books.

38.When did Carnegie get his first big success in his life?

A.When he took a job as a telegraph messenger boy.

B.When he worked at the Pennsylvania Railroad Company.

C.When he made investments in the iron industry.

D.When he founded the Carnegie Steel Company.

39.Which of the following will be the suitable title for the text?

A.Andrew Carnegie:A Wealthy Man

B.Steel & Iron:The Most Profitable Business

C.From Rags to Riches:The Story of Andrew Carnegie

D.Intelligence and Good Business Sense:Two Factors in Becoming Wealthy

The noise of chattering mouths subsided(平息) as the teacher entered classroom. “ Good morning class. I am Riffat Monaf, and I will be your geography teacher. Riffat” Monaf, an interesting name and an even more interesting person. Her introduction took place about six years ago, and since then I have never met a more influential person in my life. Mrs Monaf not only conquered me with her vast knowledge of geography, but also won me over with her smile and warm eyes. It was in her class that I traveled to the highest mountains and to the deepest seas from the comfort of the classroom. I learned about the vast oceans, the erupting volcanoes, the snow-capped mountains and the green valleys. She would often relate her adventures about traveling to different parts of the world. Never can I forget the glory of her face when she talks about how truly beautiful this world is. If I search back my love for the environment and geography, I find her to be the source of my love for preserving nature. If one day I became an environmentalist, I know that I'll thank her for it. Apart from this, she has always greeted me with open arms and she calls her students “ my children ”Mrs. Monaf's morals and values rubbed off me deeply and I have always taken her advice into consideration. She has been one of the most consistently good things in my life. Currently, she is fighting a battle against breast cancer, and it pains me to know that after all she has done for me; I can do nothing for her except pray. Whenever I see her in school, she still keeps that kind smile and an expression so soft that it trembles my heart. Mrs Monaf still talks enthusiastically about geography, and I know that I can never see what a truly great person she has been in my life. . (1) What can we learn from the second paragraph?

1) Which was the USA's strongest earthquakes ? 2) How many people lost their lives and how many people lost their homes in the 1906 earthquake ? 3) How many people lost their lives in the 1989 earthquake? 4) When the 1906 earthquake happened, how many metres did the Pacific plate jump to the north ? 5) How many measures(措施) can we take in order to deal with earthquakes ? 6) What is " The Big One"?

Flying for a long time, you finally arrive at the place where you can relax—your hotel room. Now you throwyour bag on the bed, turn on the TV and watch an international news programme on a satellite channel probably from UK or the USA. The main international broadcasters are BBC World and CNN. With an audience of over 1.5 billion people, these are popular channels that offer good-quality news programmes. In both companies, the journalists are experienced writers that produce journalism of a high standard. However, there are alternative news channels which people watch because they want a less traditional or non-Western view on world events. Russia Today and Al Jazeera International, an Arabic company, are international channels that broadcast in English. Both companies say they give a fresh view on big stories, and their experienced journalists often report from places where Western journalists do not work, and so they give us stories that we don't normally see. The Internet offers more variety. OneWorldTV is an Internet site where you can find stories about the developing world and human rights, rather than the usual stories about US politics and business. The writers for this company are often local people who write the stories for free. This non-professional journalism is increasing, and it certainly offers more choices. This increase in citizen journalism means that you can write the news, too. Main news broadcasters often use photographs and stories that members of the general public send to them, especially when there is a dramatic breaking news story. Besides this, some blogs are popular sources of news, and the website NowPublic lets you write stories using information you can get from anywhere, including sites like Youtube, Flickr and Twitter.

1) Which was the USA's strongest earthquakes ? 2) How many people lost their lives and how many people lost theirhomes in the 1906 earthquake ?
