Spring Festival Customs in My Hometown

As the most significant festivals in china, spring festival is the most favorite festival. As we all know, spring festival is held at lunar 1st January, the season of hope and happiness and last for about 15 days. Many Chinese believe that the spring festival can bring a new start and bring great fortunate. Also during the spring festival, all members of each Chinese family get together to have a big meal and the adults usually give lucky money to their children. What is more, Chinese people often visit each other and send good wishes to each other. Most of Chinese like this festival, because of the delicious food, the annual TV program, the fireworks and new clothes.

However, the way to observe the Spring Festival is quite different in different areas of China. Just like my hometown. Though the things we do during the spring festival are almost the same, there are still some differences.

In the eve of spring festival, we will have our family reunion dinner, and chicken and fish are must servedin the family reunion dinner in the eve. The f ish could not be eaten out because the fish means “niannianyouyu”. And it repres ents the wish for a prosperous year with abundant and even extra wealth and luc k. After having the meal and watching the New Year gala people in my hometown will go to the Guan Yin Temple to pray. It is quite a traditional customs in my hometown, which is becoming more and more popular in recent years. Especially there are an increasing number of young men and women. They go to there to pray for their marriage. About the kids, parents will make an egg for them, they can stick a incense on it, and go out to fool around with the egg, which is having a special meaning of selling the lazy and in the new year the kid can get rid of the lazy. W hat’s more, though Chinese has the custom of “shousui”，in my hometown, we don’t do that. Actually, we all go to bed early.

When it comes to the first day of spring festival, a lot of activities will held in my hometown, such as the tug-of-war competition, basketball competition, and badminton competition and so forth, which has also became tradition activities in my village, because they are hold every year and people all like them.

A few days later, there is a big event held in my village, which is also during the spring festival. It is the Guan yin cruise, which is definitely a big day in my village. There is procession that Guan yin will be lift by uniformed men, who are dress like the privates in ancient time, to travel around my village, with lots of people dress in different way, dressing like people playing in the Cantonese opera and people in Chinese fairy tale like Chang’e and Fairchild. And also they will invite some team to put on some performance. So splendid that almost every member in my village will go out to celebrate the cruise. Let me introduce something more detail about the cruise to you. There are 8 lanes in village, every year only one lane will be responsible for the Guan yin cruise. In other words,

this year the 1st land is responsible for the cruise, meaning they need to take care of every detailed thing of the cruise. Then next year is the 2nd lane’s turn to do it. We take it by turns. Last year it is my lane’s turn to hold it, which give me to chance to know how it operate. First of all, it needs a great deal of preparations. The leader of the lane will arrange the different people to do different work in the cruise. Some will lift the Guan yin; some taking care of the order, some responsible for the performance. What’s more, they have to prepare the stage property. Also have to invite some team from other place to play lion dance. Before the day, in case of any incident, they will do a rehearsal, which is also attracting many people to watch. When the day comes, the streets will be well decorated. Wherever the Guan yin go, a bunch of people will follow her, and people fire firecracker along the street. They pray to Guan yin, hoping that Guan yin can bless them and fulfill their dreams. The cruise travels through the village, which may take almost 3 hours to run. You can image how excited and spectacular it is.

After the cruise, there is a new china delight hold in the park; nearly everyone in my village will come here to have a meal. At this time, you can get together with your friends and relatives.

So these are ways to observe the Spring Festival in my hometown. Just as what I said, our hometown’ customs during the Spring Festival are nearly the same as other places. But what make it special are the different kinds of activities that we hold.
