第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40 分)

Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do things with. Surely, there are times when we need to be alone. We don't always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend.

No two people are the same. Sometimes friends don't get along well, which doesn't mean that they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away, then we feel very sad. We miss them much, but we can call them and write to them. Maybe we would never see them again, and we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them. Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women, if they are friendly to people in a town. Some libraries are named this way. So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places.

There's more good news for people, if they have friends. These people live longer than those people if those don't have friends. Why? It could be that they are happier. Being happy helps you stay well. Or it could be just knowing that someone cares, if someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself.

1. Which of the following is what the writer doesn't say in the passage?

A. People are happy when their friends leave them.

B. People may never see their friends after their friends move away.

C. People can know their friends in different ways.

D. People like their friends very much if they get to know them.

2. Which of the following is the most probable place people name after friendly people?

A. A house.

B. A room.

C. A library.

D. A village.

3. If people have friends, they would live longer, because __________.

A. they feel happier and healthier

B. they get a lot of help from their friends

C. they take better care of themselves

D. both A and C

4. This passage tells us __________.

A. that people are all friends

B. that people need friends

C. how to get to know friends

D. how to name a place

B

Many animals recognize their food because they see it . So do humans. When you see an apple or a piece of chocolate you know that these are things you can eat. You can also use other senses(感官) when you choose your food. You may like it because it smells good or because it tastes good. You may dislike some types of food because they do not look, smell or taste very nice. Different animals use different senses to find and choose their food. A few animals depend on only one of their senses, while most animals use more than one sense.

Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives eating only one type. The giant panda e ats only one particular type of bamboo. Other animals eat only one type of food even when given the choice. A kind of white butterfly will stay on the leaves of a cabbage, even though there are plenty of other vegetables in the garden. However, most animals have a more varied diet. The bear eats fruits and fish. The fox eats small animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these animals will be different depending on the season.

Humans have a very varied diet. We often eat food because we like it and not because it is good for us. In countries such as France and Britain, people eat foods with too much sugar. This makes them overweight, which is bad for their health. Eating too much red meat and animal products, such as butter, can also be bad for the health. Choosing the right food, therefore, has become an area of study in modern life.

5. We can infer from the text that humans and animals ________.

A. depend on one sense in choosing food

B. are not satisfied with their food

C. choose food in similar ways

D. eat entirely different food

6. Which of the following eats only one type of food?

A. The white butterfly.

B. The small bird.

C. The bear.

D. The fox.

7. We can learn from the last paragraph that _________.

A. food is chosen for a good reason

B. French and British food is good

C. some people have few choices of food

D. some people care little about healthy diet

8. Which of the following statements is true?

A. Animals often use senses to eat their food.

B. Most animals have a more varied diet.

C. All animals spend their lives eating one type of food.

D. The diet of birds and fox will be the same depending on the season.

About 97% of the world’s water is salty and is found in our oceans and seas. But, as we can’t drink seawater, how can it be important?

Every part of our seas and oc eans contains an amazing number of animals and fish that live at different ocean depths. Most of the different species(物种) of animals and fish depend on simple plants for their food. These simple plants called algae (海藻) drift near the surface of the ocean and use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into food and oxygen. In fact, algae produce over half of the oxygen people breathe. How important seawater is!

Each plant or animal in our seas and oceans is an important link in a food chain(链条). The algae are eaten in large amounts by microscopic animals, which are in turn consumed by larger animals. These food chains are delicately balanced.

The bad news about the food chains in the oceans is that they are under threat because of man. People once thought that the oceans were so bi g that it didn’t matter if we dumped rubbish into them or caught huge quantities of fish and whales for food. But we now know this is not true and fish stocks in the oceans have started to drop.

Thankfully, the world is taking steps to protect the future of our oceans by introducing international agreements to protect marine habitats. Most countries have introduced fishing restrictions(限制) to protect fish stocks(库存) in the oceans and new techniques are being pioneered to cope with pollution. Finally, the importance of protecting oceans is being made known to more people. This is just the beginning of a long process to protect the oceans for our future. We depend on the oceans for fish which are an important part of the human diet. How

important seawater is!

9. Which of the following is the proper order of the food chain?

A. small animals→algae→microscopic animals→large animals→man

B. algae→microscopic animals→large animals→larger animals→man

C. small animals→algae→large animals→microscopic animals→man

D. microscopic animals→algae→large animals →larger animals→man

10. People used to think that the rubbish thrown into the sea ________.

A. wouldn’t harm the fish in the sea

B. would change the balance of the food chain

C. would be broken down in the sea

D. wouldn’t do much harm to the sea

11. From the passage, we learn that _________.

A. most fish and sea animals live at the surface of the seas

B. it is very difficult to break the balance of a food chain

C. excessive(过量的) fishing has caused the decrease in fish stock

D. it won’t be long before the problems concerning oceans will be solved

12. What would be the best title of the passage?

A. The importance of sea water.

B. Life in the oceans.

C. How to protect food chains.

D. How to deal with seawater pollution.

D

Now, we know that if we do not get enough vitamins, we are at risk of developing a number of diseases. As a result, vitamin supplements(补品),though expensive, are popular with people who worry that they are not getting enough vitamins from the foods they eat. But contrary to what many people think, medical experts have found little evidence that most supplem ents do anything to improve health or protect against disease.

In fact, medical experts warn that taking too many of some vitamins can be harmful. For example, too much vitamin E can cause bleeding. People should discuss what vitamins they take with their doctors, as some vitamins can produce harmful side effects when mixed with medicines. Experts, however, do say that sometimes vitamins can help prevent disease. People who know they lack a particular vitamin should take vitamin supplements. Some older adults, for example, may not have enough vitamin B-twelve. This is because, as people get older, their body loses its ability to take it from foods. Also, people who spend much time inside may need some extra

vitamin D as the skin makes this vitamin from sunlight.

Different vitamins are found in different foods. Vitamin A is found in fish liver oil. It also is in the yellow part of eggs. Sweet potatoes, carrots and other darkly colored fruits and vegetables contain substan ces that the body can change into vitamin A. Vitamin B-twelve is found in green leafy vegetables and other foods, like fruits. Vitamin K can be found in pork products.

In fact, for most people, a balanced diet can ensure enough of the vitamins our bodies need. So, it is important for us to eat a mixture of foods every day to ensure that we get enough vitamins our bodies need.

13. What is probably talked about before this passage?

A. How many vitamins a person’s body needs.

B. How many vitamins some foods contain.

C. The benefits that vitamins bring to our health.

D. What people should do to stay healthy.

14. Vitamin supplements are popular with people because ________.

A. people mistakenly think that they are good for their health

B. they contain more vitamins than the foods people eat

C. food does not provide enough vitamins people need

D. people fear that a lack of vitamins will lead to disease

15. What would be the best title of the passage?

A. Getting enough vitamins through a balanced diet.

B. Vitamin supplements do harm to our health.

C. Vitamins are important to our health.

D. Lacking vitamins can cause many diseases.

According to body language expert Robert Phipps, the way people sleep at night actually determines a lot about the type of personality they have. Phipps has identified four sleeping positions that affect personality. Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in the fetal (胎儿的) position. He found that this is the most common bedtime position, with nearly 58 percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up (蜷曲), the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps. The second most common position is the log. Sleeping with a straight body, with arms at each side, as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, indicates stubbornness, and these people (the 28 percent who sleep this way) often wake up stiffer than when they went to sleep. “The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself,” according to Phipps. Yearner (向往) sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleep in this style—on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themselves. Yearners are typically their own worst critics, always expecting the best results, explained Phipps. These people often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the day ahead. Perhaps the most peculiar (奇怪的) of sleep styles is the freefaller position. This sleep style makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down with arms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, feel like they have little control over their life. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, but also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy. Inconclusion, Phipps has only one more thing to add: “A good night's sleep set you up for the following day and our sleeping positions can determine how we feel when we wake.” 根据短文内容,选择最佳答案,并将选定答案的字母标号填在题前括号内。 (1)Which sleeping position indicates that the sleeper tends to seek perfection? A、The fetal position. B、The log position. C、The yearner position. D、The freefaller position. (2)Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A、A good night's sleep sets you up for the following day B、Your personality depends a lot on how you sleep at night C、How you sleep at night affects what you do the next day D、Which sleeping position helps you sleep comfortably 2、阅读理解 Our room was on the second floor but you could still hear the roar of the ocean and see the stars at night.
