Even after centuries of exploration, the ocean still holds its mysteries. Although we know more today about the world's oceans and creatures living in them than ever before, every once in a while the sea brings up something so strange, so unexpected, that makes the world wonder what it could be.

Such was the case when the currents (水流) of the Mediterranean Ocean recently washed a 13-foot-long, smelly body onto the shores of the village of Villaricos in Andalusia, Spain. An early report in the Spanish publication La v ante described the strange, horned (带角的) body as what might seem like a big fish, but it was already in pieces. Locals joked that it was some kind of Loch Ness Monster.

The media jumped right on the creature, of course. Some sites called it a horned sea monster. The popular newspaper BoingBoing called it a dragon. Some people guessed that it might be an oarfish, which is actually a rarely seen kind of big fish that can grow up to 55 feet long.

But now the experts have weighed in and we're sorry to report that it's not a dragon, a Loch Ness Monster, or even an oarfish.“That is actually a shark skeleton (骨架),”Professor Grubbs from Florida State University told NBCNe w s.“The parts toward the back were confusing me, but those are the lower caudal fin (尾鳍) supports. The ‘horns’ are the scapulocoracoids which support the pectoral fins.” Scapulocoracoids are backbones common to many animals.

So there we go, another mystery solved. Well, the ancient maps that once described areas of the ocean as places of dragons have yet to be proven true. But it's good to know that the ocean still has a few surprises for us, even in cases where they're just dead, smelly bodies.

Nicola MacFarlane, 41, and her daughter Lucy, four, from Portobello, near Edinburgh, were playing on the Portobello Beach when they came across an old glass bottle sticking out of the sand containing a note inside written in Chinese.

It is unclear when the letter was sent off, but it was written on Chinese V alentine's Day, or Qixi Festival as it is more traditionally known, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.

Whether the message has traveled thousands of miles from China or whether it was penned by a love-struck pair much closer to home may remain a mystery. But for Nicola it doesn't matter —she is still excited to read about the Chinese love story after having it translated. She said, “I really do hope that it is from China but even if it is from someone nearer to home, it's still a lovely gesture and an inspiring find. It's a love story regardless of where it came from.”

“We saw the bottle sticking out of the sand and just thought it was junk that someone had left behind. But after picking it up I noticed there was a piece of brown paper rolled up inside and there was some foreign writing on it. We quite excitedly took it home, carefully opened the bottle and took out the sheet of paper using some tweezers (镊子). We knew it was Chinese, but we had no idea what it said.”

Unable to read the Chinese text, Nicola turned to the Internet and her Australian friend, Julie Gould, whose daughter attended a Chinese school in Sydney. Several hours later Julie returned with the news that it was in fact a love letter.

Nicola said, “It sounds to me like the couple are in love but cannot be together so they have sent the message to tell the world of their love. I'm blownaway by it to be honest — it's incredible that it has traveled all this way.”

5.According to the passage, we can know that __________.

A.the letter was written on Qixi Festival

B.the letter was mailed on Chinese Valentine's Day

C.the bottle has traveled a long distance from China

D.the bottle was thrown into the sea near Edinburgh

6.Nicola thought the bottle was thrown into the sea because __________.

A.the sender wanted to find a true lover through the letter

B.the sender expected to find a partner who liked Chinese

C.a couple couldn't stay together and showed their love in this way

D.a couple fell in love with each other and wished their love to last forever

从最后一段“It sounds to me like the couple are in love but cannot be together so they have sent the message to tell the world of their love”可知,这是一对相爱的情侣,由于不能在一起,所以他们通过漂流瓶来告诉全世界他们的爱。

7.The underlined phrase “blown away”in the last paragraph probably means “__________”.

A.depressed B.frightened

C.embarrassed D.impressed

从最后一段“it's incredible that it has traveled all this way”可知,它一路漂流而来,真是太不可思议了,blown away应与incredible(难以置信的)有相近的意思,根据选项,D项impressed(印象深刻的,感动的)的意思与之最接近。

8.Which of the following words can best describe Nicola's feelings about the letter?

A.Curious and excited.

B.Cautious and excited.

C.Doubtful and delighted.

D.Curious and dissatisfied.

Shake Shack is a new kind of restaurant becoming more popular in the US. The restaurants are not“fast food”. They are known as “fast casual”.

Observers say Americans want more choices and fresh food when choosing where and what to eat. This trend is one reason why the fast food restaurant McDonald's has struggled financially. In the last quarter of 2014, McDonald's net income dropped by about $300 million. The January earnings report brought more bad news. Worldwide sales dropped for the eighth month in a row and even more than expected. While McDonald's is struggling to get their customers back, Shake Shack is doing well in making money. The New York-based burger chain had a very successful IPO, or initial public offerings, of shares at the end of January. On its first day of trading, Shake Shack went from $21 a share to just under $46 a share. Being part of the “fast casual”trend has helped Shake Shack. Other fast casual restaurants in the US include Chipotle and Panera Bread.

Bonnie Riggs, a restaurant expert with NPD has studied Americans' restaurant habits for

almost 30 years. She says one reason why Americans like fast casual food is that it's new. It is creative, and it is something different and people like to try new things. Her study shows Americans made 61 billion visits to restaurants last year. Three out of four visits were to fast food restaurants, like McDonald's. The fast casual trend is still a small percentage of restaurant visits, but it has developed fast. Just as Ms. Riggs says, “It's growing byleapsandbounds, because they meet consumers' needs. They know it's being prepared while they wait; it's fresh, quality, good tasting food at what t hey say are reasonable and affordable prices.”

Many Americans still like their fast food. They just are not going as often. They are finding other ways to have a meal.

9.What is the trouble with McDonald's?

A.Its share goes down to $21.

B.Shake Shack has taken its place.

C.It's not popular with Americans.

D.Its sales and income have dropped.

10.We can learn from Bonnie Riggs that Americans __________.

A.like to try something new

B.care only about the quality

C.don't like fast food any more

D.pay more visits to fast casual restaurants

11.What does the underlined phrase “by leaps and bounds”in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.Steadily. B.Rapidly.

C.Slowly. D.Normally.

根据第三段的第六句“The fast casual trend is still a small percentage of restaurant visits, but it has developed fast”可推知,此处by leaps and bounds 意为“非常迅速”,即B项正确。

12.Which of the following best describes fast casual food?

A.Fresh-made and tasty.

B.High-quality and expensive.

C.Farm-to-table and traditional.

D.Time-consuming and special.

根据第三段的最后一句“They know it's being prepared while they wait; it's fresh, quality, good tasting food at what they say are reasonable and affordable prices”可知,fast casual food 新鲜、优质、味美且价位合理,即A项正确。

OLD TOM THE KILLER WHALE

I was 16 when I began work in June 1902 at the whaling station. I had heard of the killers that every year helped whalers catch huge whales. I thought, at the time, that this was just a story but then I witnessed it with my own eyes many times.

On the afternoon I arrived at the station, as I was sorting out my accommodation, I heard a loud noise coming from the bay. We ran down to the shore in time to see an enormous animal opposite us throwing itself out of the water and then crashing down again. It was black and white and fish-shaped. But I knew it wasn't a fish.

“That's Old Tom, the killer,”one of the whalers, George, called out to me. “He's telling us there's a whale out there for us.”

Another whaler yelled out, “Rush-oo ... rush-oo.”This was the call that announced there was about to be a whale hunt.

“Come on, Clancy. To the boat,”George said as he ran ahead of me. I had already heard that George didn't like being kept waiting, so even though I didn't have the right clothes on, I raced after him.

Without pausing we jumped into the boat with the other whalers and headed out into the bay.

I looked down into the water and could see Old Tom swimming by the boat, showing us the way.

A few minutes later, there was no Tom, so George started beating the water with his oar and there was Tom, circling back to the boat, leading us to the hunt again.

Using a telescope we could see that something was happening. As we drew closer, I could see a whale being attacked by a pack of about six other killers.

“What're they doing?” I asked George.

“Well, it's teamwork — the killers over there are throwing themselves on top of the whale's blow-hole to stop it breathing. And those others are stopping it diving or fleeing out to sea,”George told me, pointing towards the hunt. And just at that moment, the most extraordinary thing happened. The killers started racing between our boat and the whale just like a pack of excited dogs.

Then the harpoon was ready and the man in the bow of the boat aimed it at the whale. He let it go and the harpoon hit the spot. Being badly wounded, the whale soon died. Within a moment or two, its body was dragged swiftly by the killers down into the depths of the sea. The men started turning the boat around to go home.

“What's happened?” I asked. “Have we lost the whale?”

“Oh no,”Jack replied. “We'll return tomorrow to bring in the body. It won't float up to the

surface for around 24 hours.”“In the meantime, Old Tom, and the others are having a good feed on its lips and tongue,”added Red, laughing.

****

Although Old Tom and the other killers were fierce hunters, they never harmed or attacked people. In fact, they protected

them. There was one day when we were out in the bay during a

hunt and James was washed off the boat.

“Man overboard! Turn the boat around!”urged George, shouting loudly.

The sea was rough that day and it was difficult to handle the boat. The waves were carrying James further and further away from us. From James's face, I could see he was terrified of being abandoned by us. Then suddenly I saw a shark.

“Look, there's a shark out there,”I screamed.

“Don't worry, Old Tom won't let it near,”Red replied.

It took over half an hour to get the boat back to James, and when we approached him, I saw James being firmly held up in the water by Old Tom. I couldn't believe my eyes.

There were shouts of “Well done, Old Tom”and “Thank God”as we pulled James back into the boat. And then Old Tom was off and back to the hunt where the other killers were still attacking the whale.
